Ashtanga Yoga is much more than just the series of poses you see on the mat, so we’re getting deep into the other parts of this practice that don’t always get talked about.
In this video, we discuss the lifestyle aspects of Ashtanga Yoga based on the tradition and on our own experiences. You’ll learn about the traditional practice schedule and the significance of moon days, as well as why the repetition and structure within Ashtanga is so important. You’ll understand how to find freedom within the discipline, what yoga is about beyond the asanas, and what kinds of changes start to happen over time when you commit to your practice. We also share suggestions for easing into this practice and finding balance while building up to establishing a daily habit.
WHAT SHOULD WE MAKE NEXT? 🎥

I love how you explained the vrittis!! This is why we do the opening prayer, right? - To bow down to Patanjali who explains in the Yog Sutras; yoga and sadhana/ our practice to find that ever- residing still component within. It’s such a joy to hear how you understand and live yogic lifestyle! More talks like this about your morning routine too! 🙏💐

As a person who is professionally outside of the yoga world, I would really love a talk like this coming from other people professionally outside of the yoga world! I think this would be a great place for it, since you probably have students (with 40h/week commitments) who could share their 6x/week practice with us. :)

Great and insightful talk! I would argue that there might more direct ways to observe one's own behavioral patterns or connect with inner stillness than taking up yogic gymnastics 6 days a week. That's just me though I know a lot of people feel it works for them.

This was so helpful! I’m no where near my goal with ashtanga asana, but my real obstacle is inconsistency, and that’s is ALL due to mental fluctuations. I will continue to strive for consistency. That alone will help in so many other areas of my life too.

Came across your channel recently and really love it. Thank You. Do you think you’ll ever organize your videos into playlists? I’d love to have them in sequential order to complete the order of the postures. Maybe this is covered in your online classes.

I really appreciate your beautiful truth. Your words are powerful for life and the yoga Sanskrit word and their definition is so welcome because yoga instructors need to be reminded of this structure of this internal life so others being taught any type of yoga can be this example of the depth of truth. I enjoy your precision of explaining the asanas. Om Namo Bhagavata ❤

I’m finding it quite hard to commit to my daily practice this summer, as I tend to socialise more in the evenings and struggle getting up at my usual time. I’m 25 so I don’t want to miss out on too much fun stuff but I also fee better when I have a daily practice! I live somewhere that is very quiet in the winter, so I tend to have a bit more discipline then. What to dooo

I want to get more into the dogma of the practice now as I struggle with consistency. It took me a while to realize the lack of consistency was about my mental state before getting on the mat and and would often stop mid way when my mind got busy with worry or if I broke concentration. So now Ive begun to implement some changes in my daily routine to make sure my mental state is calm for the yoga. Its amazing how much better a person ashtanga can drive you to be in all aspects of life.

This was so inspiring. I am having a very hard time with the practice, in an unusual way though. I have two small children (3yo and 11mo) and I still (try to) practice 6 times a week, the problem is that no matter what time I wake up, they also wake up early enough to come and bother me and interrupt me. The result is that I get mad and sad and angry, and I feel like my days are ruined. I think this is a result of bad attachment to the practice...I hope I'll be able to take things in a lighter way 🙏 and get my space back some day soon 😅

I can’t thank you both enough. I’ve been practicing yoga for a few years but just started considering focusing on ashtanga for awhile. I’m so drawn to the discipline and simplicity of the same poses each day for the spiritual focus it’ll offer. I feel like showing up on my mat each day trying to figure out what flow I need to come up with it tiring and takes away from what I currently am searching for within my practice. This video helped me so much. I am afraid of hurting myself. I’ve heard injuries happen a decent amount within ashtanga. I don’t have a teacher here where I live so I will be checking out your other alignment videos! Can I ask why you take full moon days off? I’m considering doing the same. I feel like that is so powerful! Is it part of ashtanga practice or a personal decision for both of you?

I find all your videos really helpful and this was an interesting talk. I go to an ashtanga class one evening a week and also try to practice every day but it’s often at different times of the day due to my work commitments, with longer practice times at the weekends. Do you think it makes a difference that the times in the day vary? I know the recommendation is that it’s first thing in the morning but that isn’t always possible for me. I’ve also been ill with a very bad cold recently and tried to practice though it but think I was making it worse. Do you stop if you are not well?

Hi Kani and Goku!😊is it very important to start practicing early morning, my former Ashtanga Teacher pressed me slowly to come 6.30 and that is why I quit because I also had to drive there etc. and I thought due to chronic pain I can’t manag that longterm. Now I practice at home and I start when I want, but maybe that is a lazy mind?

Hi there! In the beginning (which I still I'm at 😅) I was only practicing midday and when I didn't have proper time I was just practicing a short practice, but with the time I started realizing that I wasn't really practicing the method but self indulgence... You know? It seems like I was making it hard to practice so I didn't have to face the postures, the fears, the discomforts that the practice bring along. And now, after a year and 3 months I'm only practicing early on the morning, but online. Because I don't live near the shaka as well, so one way I find easier to not "make myself fail" in the practice was to find teachers who attend online classes and I've got to say, my practice, habits, mind etc are at another level, so much better. Maybe you star putting once a week to go practice at the shala, may help you out 😊
