◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
In this episode, we spend the day in Osaka with Yoko Taro, director of the famous Drakengard and NieR series. Our first stop will be at PlatinumGames, the studio that was in charge of developing Yoko’s most recent title: NieR: Automata. During development, Yoko Taro lived between Tokyo and Osaka, often meeting in Tokyo with Square Enix’s producer Yosuke Saito, who first suggested the game to be developed by PlatinumGames.
Yoko will introduce us to his rather peculiar work style, before taking us to Shinsaibashi at THE SILVER BALL PLANET, an arcade specialized in vintage pinball machines. He will share with us his fascination for pinball and the little universes contained within each machine. We will then continue our conversation at his apartment where he will tell us more about his philosophy and his work.
After dusk, we will head with Yoko to Osaka’s dynamic Dotombori area for drinks with the producer Yosuke Saito and Takahisa Taura, who worked as a game designer and had a key role on NieR: Automata according to Yoko; the three of them will recall fun stories from the development of the game.
Thanks to Arman and Arshia for the Persian subtitles.

***** Saying no offense before calling someone stupid seems counterintuitive don't you think? I'm not a 'Yoko Taro' fan Automaat is the only game of his I've played and I only played it because Platinum's name is attached. I did not say a word about Yoko being a fantastical genius in storytelling and game design. All of his games prior to Automata look jank as shit and are repetitive for the most part. I tossed a compliment his way because not imposing opinions is a quality I wish I saw more of in story driven games. I don't think you even know what I'm referring to with that. I don't mean imposing what a character conveys to the player to do in a situation, I mean it in the sense of what the developer is trying to say with his story and how he is presenting it. He does a good job at that, better than most games I've played in the last few years.

+Sakaar Its debatable, however mostly no. If you really played them all and really deeply learn them you will know. Yoko Taro left a lot of space for players to imagine. Specially, all his games don't directly continue or prequel to each other. All of theory on internet I read has few flaw and do not support whole structure itself completely. So does in each sub-story itself and setting. Just simply say to you, no offense, stupid that without actually understand the meaning behind the view and loudly present your ignorance is pretty unbearable.

What an inspiring guy... he has become my role model of sorts. I love the idea behind the mask (or at least what I assume it to be). Yes, I know Yoko Taro doesn't like to appear on camera, but I like to see the whole mask thing as a way to represent his view on game development and teamwork in general. Without a face, there can be no one to point to to represent his games. And that's the beauty of it. He understands game development, and any company work actually, as something of a team effort, and not just a single person's glory. He wants everyone to be represented by this Emil mask, and not just Yoko Taro himself shining in the spotlight. This goes along with what he holds important: to doubt, in other words, can also be interpreted as humility. To understand and accept that even in a place of power, there will always be room for improvement and growth. The Emil mask shows his humble character. Despite being a director, working with large companies, earning himself both money and reputation, he still don the Emil mask and claim that he did not do much at all. lol I may have rambled a bit too long over a mask, but that's how I feel about this guy. Hell, it may not even be symbolizing anything, but I like to keep that idea in my head anyways.

He seems like a very nice and intelligent person who's giving all his passion towards something he loves to do. Nier: Automata was hands down one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life, really simple at first glance but the core of it is way more complicated, clever and brilliant. I'm with you, I'm a little younger than you, but Nier Replicant completely redefined what games can do with storytelling to me. I've played all those other games people have said have good stories and they've all been horrible to be honest. I haven't felt anything like this in a video game since I played Half-Life 2 in my high school years. Over the past two weeks, I've slowly come to the realization that Replicant may be my favorite game of all time. There's certainly games with better combat, but I don't think I've ever felt this way over any piece of fiction in my life, and I digest a lot of fiction, mostly through books and television.

Fun story. I never had a gaming console. The end. And I played NieR replicant only recently when it came out in steam. The loading screens there, it is pages from the main character's sister's diary. And one of those saying: "6th of June. Today is [charcterName] birthday, but he's not here. So I just had a party by myself!" I thought "Hah, what I nice touch, they took my birthday from steam". But I read some articles afterward and no, the game is not taking that date from steam. Originally developers from Cavia put Yoko Taro's birthday there as a placeholder. And it ended up in the final release )

As far as Taro goes, it'd probably have to be a not overly crowded place with alcohol. Being hyper reclusive and liking to get drunk are two prominent traits to Taro, so much so that he makes jokes around them. Like when he apologized to Germany for not being able to visit in person due to his liver acting up, and saying 'if I went there, all I'd do is drink your beer and eat your fancy sausages, so what's the point if I can't?'

Awesome interview as always. Would really love to see Taro working on more big SE games, maybe even a Final Fantasy entry at some point. If you guys could get a hold of Tetsuya Nomura for one of these interview, it would be mega awesome!
