Yoko Wakare (Side Separation Throw) and Yoko Guruma (side Wheel Throw) are similar to each other and in this video, the emphasis is on Yoko Wakare. The main point of this video is to show how to use the Figure Four or Keylock grip on an opponent to control him and set him up for Yoko Wakare and Yoko Guruma.

Thanks very much for this. I just automatically give a thumbs up before the video even begins because Steve and Derrick's teaching is so good. As a 56 year-old white belt who just started Judo a couple of months ago, this all looks fantastic, but that it is going to take me a lot of time and practice to accomplish anything like this. I can barely do my ukemi so far.

Great breakdown. Worth to cover, a common defense is the uke pushing away at your head with his free hand. It secures the Yoko Wakare that much more or a Yoko Otoshi. But also, you can push that defending arm up with your figure four grip and sabaki to the other side for a nice opening to save myriad of throws

That's a cool technique, and a good option off of that two on one. Once I'm injury free, I'm definitely going to be trying that!

I hope your injury is a minor one and heals quick. One thing for sure in Judo is that we do get dinged up!

@@welcomematstevescott It's a torn calf muscle, but it's healing relatively quickly. Hopefully I can get back on the tatami in a couple of weeks. Do you think you could do a video on 'injury management', given your experience as a coach?

Hey 😊 Steve how are you Sensei!! Happy new year boss al way from the uk...what is best to finish off with arm bar or switch grips into kimura or what would you suggest after you done barrel role and they on there back and you have figure four reverse kimura grip what would you suggest to go into submission wise? Thanks 👍 stay blessed
@welcomematstevescott

Happy new year. We've had good success with stretching the opponent's arm out in a juji gatame as a double trouble move from the triangle in that position.

Kubi Nage is more of a hip throw and in Tai Otoshi, your extended leg is what uke is thrown over. IN Kubi Nage, you may have an extended leg but you still load uke onto your hip to throw him.

Just wondering if Yoko Guruma can be used as an attack against bend over ( BJJ) opponent?
@welcomematstevescott
@welcomematstevescott 5 лет назад
I would think it is a good idea. One effective way to beat a low or bent over opponent is to get even lower than him. Sacrifice techniques like this one usually get the job done.

I wonder how useful this could be on a guy with a gun or knife using one arm against you? The arm control is there, the body position off line of fire is there, and the off balance. Looks interesting. Definitely a bjj tournament go to. 👍 Thank you for the knowledge fellas.

According to laws of physics the force would be greater than 170lbs that he would have to deadlift 😉
