Japan's second city is largely overlooked by tourists. Big mistake! This historic port city to the south of Tokyo boasts a buzzing Chinatown, a revitalised waterfront area, and classic colonial style buildings that bring a touch of Europe to the Orient.
The city makes for an easy day trip from Tokyo - and why not stop off in the port city of Kawasaki en route?
This film (recorded in January 2020) includes:
Kawasaki Daishi Temple: Hidden away in a suburban area of Kawasaki city lies the taste temple complex of Kawasaki Daishi, the head temple of the Chizan sect of Japanese Shingon buddhism. The surrounding streets are packed with stalls selling Daruma dolls, sweets and hot steamed buns.
Yokohama Chinatown: The largest Chinatown in Japan, rammed with food options and incense laden temples.
Minato Mirai: The modern waterfront development housing a plethora of shops, art galleries and the Landmark Tower.
Motomachi: A district of boutiques and high end cafes.
Yamate (The Bluff): French colonial villas rub shoulders with English country churches in this unique neighbourhood that also enjoys fabulous views over the city.
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse: Back on the waterfront, these historic port warehouses now house souvenirs outlets and cafes.
Nissan Gallery: Explore this free exhibition of all things Nissan, housed beneath the company’s global headquarters.
