Proving that the harder you hit drums the worse they sound. Playing gentle and dynamic actually lets the drums and cymbals SING and breathe. 2:05 sounded like an ocean wave. Todd Sucherman also said it - if you hit your crashes as hard as you can - the sound is gone instantly.
That’s either badly phrased or just plain wrong. Every drum has its own dynamic range. There’s a point where the drum is at its maximum potential for volume and hitting it harder than that will only choke the drum, but not hitting it hard enough will not activate the drum fully and you will just be hearing the stick on the head. So there’s a range starting right above that minimum that goes right up to the maximum, anything within that range is objectively a good result, your preference of sound within that range is entirely subjective, a good drummer will use that full range to their advantage. Saying softer is better and harder is worse as a blanket statement is just wrong, aslong as it’s within that dynamic range it’s just about what fits the music and your ear.
If you want to make a blanket statement then that would be the harder you hit them the better they sound, because few people are actually capable of hitting a drum hard enough (with proper technique) to choke the drum.
I've been watching you a while and you are quite possibly the most underrated drummer that should be known more. Plus I love your weird dry sense of humor keep up the awesome work
I'd be interested in watching a slow-mo recording of your improvisations to watch how you shift between modes of handling the sticks, and to see all the detail in capturing, preparing and releasing or pushing them. 50 fps here is pretty good played back at 1/4 speed. It would be interesting to see it slower more smoothly. Cheers!
I have been playing the drums for many years but frankly, I now realize that I need to take weekly lessons from you Yoni. Let me know your schedule. :) LOL ♪♫♪ Your approach to the instrument is like a flowing river running toward the sea. Peace & best wishes my friend!
