Played against a Yorion deck last night. OP dropped turn 5 Oracle of Alpha. Their deck goes up to 69 cards. Very next turn - with no card draw or selection - just hit the 56 to 1 odds and top decks Ancestral Recall. Barf.

I think that all the cards (blue or otherwise) that can be tempo attackers that get you a single card of value back per turn when they connect, seem to be really good in this current iteration of the cube. I had a deck sort of based around that and they win you a lot of games by drawing you into more gas consistently while applying a little bit of pressure, and it's a valid approach to this build of the cube, from what I saw.

Glad you are getting a bit suspicious of how the game matches your opponent. I firmly believe that in draft it absolutely tries to make the first match as close to a mirror as it can. Also, I get called crazy by the people on Reddit but Bo1 Ranked is certainly matched based on decks and MMR.

That's not you being crazy, that's just confirmation bias. There are no experiments that show any kind of correlation like that, people's brains just love finding patterns where there are none.

There was that whole debacle with someone finding out the card rankings in brawl and I imagine its similar with other formats too. This cube ive been noticing a lot more mirror matches personally, especially for the first match. Once I get a few matches in it seems like its more your rank affecting the matchmaking than deck strength. But i swear I draft an izzet control deck and get paired against 3 izzet/grixis control decks. Same with aggro, draft boros and get paired against 3 shades of white weenie aggro to start. Bloody frustrating Ahhh he mentions the brawl thing lol

@@marlowelain205It could be that in cube draft specifically the matchmaking indeed works this way, but there is no evidence it's like that in any of the ranked formats, BO1 or otherwise. The only thing proven to affect BO1 ranking was MMR, and it only affected constructed afaik. But cube draft isn't ranked, so it's entirely possible that there is indeed such a mechanism in place there, though it's equally likely that people just draw parallels where there are none.

Zero evidence of deck matched matchmaking in ranked queues. I could see cube having it for some reason.

I've been saying, and been vilified, that there's a deck matching algorithm in BO3 limited too for quite a while (say 3+ years). The amount of mirror matches in the first game are just too high for it not to be noticeable. It sucks because when you've drafted an absolute peach, you have this high chance of facing a extremely strong deck too. It works bot ways too, with mh3 for example: When you raredrafted medallions you would face OPs with medallions in their deck. 9 out of 10 times; those decks were really poor

Dang, I commend you for trying the Yorion route. From the few drafts I’ve played you’re correct about the blink decks. I tried it last night and I think I went like 3-3? Sky Boat, though, has been a HOUSE in my experience.
