York AC freezing up after less than a year

I had an unpleasant surprise awaiting me at work this morning.
The line set for the York TCD2B installed last summer was frozen from the compressor all the way inside to the evaporator coil. After shooting this brief video, I shut off the disconnect but left the indoor blower running. The layer of ice throughout the line set melted after about an hour, at which point I flipped the unit back on to keep the office cool. After a few more hours it didn't seem to have any problems, so we shall see if it does it again.
Sad to see leaks are all to common in HVAC equipment anymore. If it doesn't leak right out of the box, it won't be long before it starts leaking.
Not surprising here because York/Johnson Control's micro channel coils are notorious for failures. This unit also has the infamous (and in a bad way) LG scroll compressor.
UPDATE (6/21/2024): The company who installed it diagnosed the problem being a failed thermal expansion valve (TXV) on the evaporator coil.

Lennox is the WORST for LEAKS, LEAKY LENNOX.

Oddly, this York replaced an older (1994) Lennox condensing unit nearly identical (although larger) to the one in the background of this video. I've heard their new stuff is junk, much like York/JCI equipment. That Lennox in the background doesn't function because it has a massive leak somewhere. Last time a tech had the access panel off every single piece of copper in that unit was completely corroded. When it did function it froze up just like this York, although it took much longer to thaw.

York and Lennox are the absolute worst for leaks and frozen systems. My company does not sell either product because of these issues. I like their designs but the delivery is a fail and QC is rough. But great job security!! Unfortunately, for the homeowners, they get big pills either way. Repair or replacing it are going to hurt the wallet.

Probably a failed crappy microchannel coil with a leak. These coils are absolute junk. That old lennox hs unit to the left will probably outlive this york.

The evaporator had a failed TXV. The Lennox in the background is unfortunately dead as well, it has a serious leak itself somewhere.

microchannel is good, for little until this happens

I remember a lot of techs recommending people stay away from them, especially when York/UPG started using them. (I remember John Israel doing a lot of videos about them around a decade ago.) It sucks that most manufacturers are going toward micro channel coils in residential. Nortek, Rheem, Lennox and maybe others use them in their residential products alongside York if I'm not mistaken. (This particular unit isn't "residential" since it's three-phase, but usually micro channel was reserved for much larger equipment.)

@@1912RamblerFan01 microchannel is good for better heat transfer, up until they leak like a mofo and/or clog up if you don't braze with nitrogen. zero contaminants can get in those tiny *micro* scopic tubes or it will clog

We avoid microchannel systems all together, if possible. But we get plenty of work repairing them, so I stay always busy.

Thankfully our Coleman/York heat pump doesn’t have the micro channel coil. It’s been great so far, whisper quiet too

This unit is pretty quiet, especially in comparison to the older Lennox it replaced. It worked great until this recent heat wave, which is when it started icing up and not cooling as well. Is your Coleman an upper-end model like the Echelon series? I thought they had went to using micro channel on all of their residential equipment.

Seems all equipment, regardless of brand, sucks and continue to decline in quality/reliability. York/JCI is just some of the worst I've heard of, though...

@@1912RamblerFan01 Imo Nortek is the worst of the worst when it comes to current-production. I have never seen one of their microchannel heat pumps last more than 8 years

@@CompactHVAC I grew up in one of the towns Nortek/Nordyne abandoned when they moved all production to Saltillo, Coahuila. Seems their presence in the HVAC industry has diminished since that move, at least around here. Most new equipment you see here is Goodman or York/Luxaire/Guardian/JCI UPG

@@1912RamblerFan01 Around here you usually see Carrier/Bryant, Goodman, Trane/American Standard, and Nortek (usually under Airtemp). You rarely see new Lennoxes and JCI products in my neck of the woods

Until I read the comments, I was gonna suggest "seems typical of a new home owner who never bothers to change their filters until they first have to pay for someone to do that for them!"

I personally checked the filter about a month ago when the cooling season began. It has one of those really thick (5 inch) pleaded filters. When I checked it, the filter was pretty much like new on both sides. So it's not like the system is being starved of proper airflow, even though in my humble, non-professional opinion the return air on this system isn't optimal. Instead of properly having returns throughout the space, it draws air from the furnace closet and space above the drop ceilings. There's not even a return air vent on the closet. (Thankfully 90% furnace using outside combustion air, but still not how it should've been done when the old Pulse was installed in the '90s.)
