We are spending 2 days in York, England, exploring historic sites, trying foods and drinks, and checking out the amazing things this city has to offer. We start our day at the York Minster, even climbing the tower to get the fantastic view from the top before heading to the Shambles, getting drinks at The Botanist, having afternoon tea at the famous Betty's tea room, grabbing a drink at a haunted pub (we later learned the alleged most haunted pub in York is actually the Golden Fleece). On our last day we check out the popular Ghost Merchants of York and get a Yorkshire Pudding wrap before heading on to Whitby.

Recommend Saltaire in West Yorkshire, it’s a World Heritage site and model village. Specifically recommend: Guided tour of the village, Salts Mill, Roberts Park, River Walk, Shipley Glen Tramway, Shipley Glen, lots of places to eat and drink, for example SALT Brewery. It is also a film location for many movies and TV programmes.

As a York resident, I have to warn that they may be entertaining, but they are a poor way to learn the history. They are led by actors, and performing a script; they will admit that it necessarily has to be largely fictional or at least embellished. For those interested in the actual history of York though there are plenty of ways to explore it including The Jorvik Centre, Yorkshire Museum, Castle Museum Barley Hall, Fairfax House and many others.

The wife and I spent 4 days in York last month and fell in love with it. We stayed at an outstanding little B&B ( Bishop and Bison ) booked through our wonderful tour company (McKinlay Kidd) and enjoyed our entire stay. We loved the old town and its shops and pubs. The minster is treasure not to be missed. The Yorkshire Dales is so beautiful you have to keep telling yourself that it is actually real.

We love York. York, the North Yorkshire Dales and Moors, The Lake District are our favourite places. You mentioned the Cat Trail. It's a trail (the maps are available at the Cat Gallery, a super shop fir cat enthuiasts!), whereby you can wander through the city, finding the cats (not real ones!) On buildings throughout. Great way to see more of the city, too. Weirdly, we still haven't done it! York Minster is fantastic. You should check out the one in Ripon, too. Smaller, but equally beautiful, and eight humorous little touches everywhere.

The Shambles were originally butcher shops hence the name. The shops used to have fold down shelves (Shembles) outside on which were displayed various animal parts and joints of meat. The word Shambolic originates from the sight of these displays.

In the Brythonic language which was spoken in most of northern England prior to the arrival of the Danes, and later the Saxons, York was called Efrog (which it still is in Welsh). Hence, New York is Efrog Newydd in Welsh! I love this city, seat of the second most senior archbishop in the 100 million-member Anglican Communion, with St Paulinus, who died in 644 being the first, just 50 yrs after the first Archbishop of Canterbury. This was about 400 yrs after the first bishop in Wales.

Were you told how 'Shambles' got its (medieval) name? (It used to be where all the butchers lived, and they threw the bones and carcasses out the door toward the drain in the centre of the street) In fact so many of York's city centre streets ('gates') have names indicating what you would encounter there, eg: Swinegate - where you'd find the pig market Coppergate - where you'd go for the services of a cooper (barrel maker - the storage containers of that time) Monkgate - where the brethren hung out. Colliergate - charcoal makers/sellers Spurriergate - where you'd go for your spurs Jubbergate - where the Jews lived Deansgate - where the Dean lived (I'm guessing) Gillygate - where the church of St.Giles used to be (now a Salvation Army Citadel) Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate - where you'd go to get your whop-ma whipped. Grape Lane - err... ...umm ...don't ask. (Just DON'T)

Unfortunately, he ran out of glacé cherries during covid lockdown so instead of two cherries as usual, there was only one on the top of the two cakes he gave me. I opened up the bag. I was a bit surprised at the sight, so I asked him, “Did you really mean to give a woman about to undergo breast surgery two cakes with one big red cherry on top?” Now they’re known as nipple cakes.

I'm visiting York in a months time, never been there. I've been to Whitby. You know it's where Dracula landed in England. More historically its where the indomitable Captain Cook sailed from in a converted coal boat to explore new worlds and boldly go where very few Europeans had gone before

You must visit Chatsworth house in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District with the nearby Town of Bakewell, famous for its Tarts and Puddings. Also the nearby Town of Chesterfield with its famous Crooked spire for you to climb. Lincoln is another great historical City with Cathedral. So nice to see you enjoying your journeys in the UK.

I went to Uni in York in the late 90s and loved it so much I stayed there for a few years. Some friends took me back as a surprise for my 40th and it didn't feel the same sadly. Homeless people, run down areas, graffiti, and a lot more commercialisation. Still nicer than most places though and maybe I was more oblivious to the negatives when I was younger and wide eyed. Nice to watch a tour guys, glad you liked it.

Given you just described a better version of York in the late 90s than the reality, you must have either been doing some incredible drugs, or just have been socially unaware. By 2000, York was one of the homeless capitols in the UK - graffiti was everywhere as the old decrepit buildings were yet to be torn down and replaced and it was always highly commercially focused.

@8:05 if that image of those stick is meant to be pork scratchings, they weren't like anything i buy, if you want pork scratching's find a old engish pub they always have packets of them... the real scratchings... or find a supermarket and look for them in there, you can find them in most superstores. i get mine from Tesco's or ASDA or Sainbury's, the brand is MR porky, or there are other brands.

When someone visits York for 2 days there's no chance for them to see everything. I have lost count of the number of times I've been to York (I grew up not far away and have relatives who live there) and I know there are still many places I haven't visited.

Aye York is pretty cool place to visit. I'm regards to the American candy shops I suggest you avoid them like the plague they are well known money laundering places full of counterfeit or out of date goods purposely over priced to discourage people buying anything. It's currently becoming a thing in the news about them especially since they started taking over Oxford St in London.

Did you really skip the celler of York minster? That's the really interesting parts of the minster, like a fantastic museum down there of it's history, and the old roman parts of it, too bad if you missed it. But you did at least go up the tower, I didn't when I was there, so too bad I skipped on that. I can also recommend going up the city walls, really lovely 😊

Fudge Kitchen really is the best fudge ever. And you can freeze it which completely justifies buying lots of flavours. I cannot comment on whether it tastes as good when you defrost it as erm…I didn’t leave it long enough to need freezing 😁
