You're a saviour for making these videos. It's sad to see these beautiful old stadiums go and turning into housing estates but unfortunately it's happening with a lot of football stadiums nowadays. You're documenting of these places is very interesting. Keep up the great work!
@@FootyAdventures I was in York yesterday. I went to Bootham Crescent to see Grimsby years ago. I also went to Hull City's old ground Boothferry Park several times including once in 1980 when we went by special train before the bridge was built and they had a train station directly outside the ground. There is literally no trace of Boothferry Park left. Looks like Bootham Crescent is going the same way which for a City built on history seems completely wrong.
You know I bet this is happening with cities as well because fewer and fewer people want to have children and considering what’s been going on with the climate I don’t blame them how about a few more years of neglect on those buildings and when they crumble we can put native trees in their place That goes for every abandoned building on the planet
one of the greatest nights of my life was at Bootham Crescent, watched Burnley win the old 4th division there, amazing night and York will always hold a place in my heart.
I visited there in 2001 - just wandered in off the street. We went into the shop and asked if we could look around. The Commercial Manager came out and gave us a stadium tour! Lovely , friendly people and a proper old-school ground.
Went there as an away supporter years ago with Portsmouth, great old ground. A club and a city with a rich history, hopefully better times and league football coming back for York City.
I was only at bootham crescent only once and sadly it was the fixture between York city and my club Lincoln City in 1990 I went that day to the ground with my brother when sadly David longhurst collapsed and died on the pitch.we didn't know what was going on but soon found out,and the match was abandoned. RIP david sadly missed ❤❤
Went to a preseason friendly at York with Leeds 4 or 5 years ago. Proper old school away end. No roof just concrete steps! Sad to see it getting torn down.
Brilliant video. You'll have to come and watch a game at the LNER stadium as videos like this don't really do it justice. The atmosphere the York fans create especially in the South stand is something that you need to witness first hand
Rangers fan here currently living in York and absolutely it is an amazing little city. New stadium looks great can't wait to get to a game this season. Should of checked out the teams new 3rd kit it's an absolute beauty with a nod to the city's chocolate making history. Give it a look
Belated welcome to my city! I've lived here only 10 years but first moved to very close to Bootham Crescent and went many times, so seeing it in this state is quite sad (though nothing in comparison to the actual fans, I'm sure). Oh, and it's the Minstermen ;) Hope you enjoyed York!
Thanks for this Sam. I'd been hoping you'd get to York. I'm a York City Knights fan, we're the rugby league club who play at the same ground as York City. The new stadium is built on the site of our old ground and we shared Bootham Crescent with City while the new ground was being built.
Thanks for the video. I grew up in York and was taking to my first match in 1987. Some great memories at Bootham Crescent. Me and my mates used to stand behind the goal and sometimes try and seek in the popular stand (seated stand along the side) at half time! There was a tunnel underneath the back which is being retained I believe as part of the new housing development. Moved away from York since but managed to get a ticket for the recent play off final at the LNER. Cracking atmosphere that day in front of c7500. It a bit of a lego stadium but the fans really get behind the team. Hopefully the catalyst for City to get back in the FL where they belong.
New stadium looks very nice. Good luck to York City with that. Good to see it is a community stadium too that is key to keeping the place busy and profitable.
I'm really grateful for this video! I've commentated on York's home matches since January 2019 but I've only been able to do the occasional game since moving down south in the autumn of last year. Whenever I'm back in the vicinity of York, I always take a look at Bootham Crescent and feel nostalgic as I recall the happy memories I had there of doing a job I love everything about. I was there last month just hours before our Promotion Final game and it looks very different now compared to a month ago. Watching the video, I was moved to tears when I saw what was the pitch. But yes to clarify what you mentioned in the video, the site will be converted into housing but street/building names will be named after club legends. Various parts of the ground will also be remembered one way or another like the centre circle and one of the stands I believe. Keep up the great work, mate. It's great to see a RU-vidr with the same passions as myself and you present each video really well!
York City, just like Darlington are one of my favourite clubs daily and ever in this world and other planets but I am extremely so sad and in tears to see the club to be extinct!!!Hopefully, the club would be reformed as soon as possible and the respective York City supporters would pay for respective tickets to watch their beloved club's matches!!!🙏
Not much into football anymore but I’ve been loving many of these videos since I started watching, and I always like the crossovers of sorts when Rugby League is featured with a stadium share or some historic memorabilia in other locations. And I wonder if one day you’d ever consider going to places with football teams sharing a city/town with other famous clubs in other sports, like Headingley (Leeds) and Odsall (Bradford) and so on.
I watch York Knights rugby at the new stadium, its a great stadium for both teams and the community. Bootham crescent was good but times move on, and the land it was sat on was way move valuable.
York is a beautiful city, would recommend anyone to visit if they haven't already. The jewel in the crown is the minster, but I personally love that the streets are all like they would have been 200 years ago. So lovely!!
This is a great video, as all of your vids are! Always enjoyable having a nostalgic and fascinating trip down memory lane! There are some great pics from 2019 on street view of Bootham Crescent. Pics of the ticket office, club shop, players and office entrance. They even had a programme shop next to the main club shop. There is also a pic from 2021 of the club shop. By then, it was boarded up, which is a very sad sight. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!
Nice vid Sam, luckily went to Bootham Crescent a few times following Kiddy Harriers, not a massive fan of the new ground although I noticed when going there last season that the noise levels would be great with a full house in.
I believe the plans to memorialise Bootham Crescent are to retain a small section of the Popular Stand, mark at least some of the centre circle in a communal area and erect a flag pole as a nod to what used to be known as the 5 minute flag. Also the streets on the new development will be given YCFC-related names.
Great video mate. It's a long time since I visited Bootham Crescent, Aug 91 with Gillingham to be precise, but a lovely old school ground. Shout out to the York fans in general, too - met a few at Telford while groundhopping at the end of last season. Good bunch of lads
Great video . Come and do Gateshead FC , check out old redheugh park , and now the international stadium . We are national League north champions .and we have the coolest badge
Wonderful content everytime I watch. If you still need some more grounds: Chesterfield (new ground & look back to where they used to play) Barnsley Sheffield FC (this is where they are moving to, I know you've already done a video on them at current ground) Matlock Town Alfreton Town
awww sad I missed you…I live along one of those streets. It’s a shame to see it go and I miss the crowd noises on match days but it was mayhem in those little streets with the crowds. They sold off a lot the seats from the grounds and if you go to Spark you can see some of their chairs(if they still have them there)
Brilliant video , yes Bootham Crescent are keeping part of one of their stands ,the Popular Stand I think , had a walk round there last July before it sadly went, very close to the Minster, but sadly looking very dated now .......
Brilliant video. So many of us detest, hate, these plastic soulless stadiums. Hollywood Bowl? Exactly. Middle of nowhere, all about dodgy deals with corrupt developers and their council lackeys.
The rugby team that ground share are called York City Knights and they are a rugby league team. After 15 rounds they are third in the table with a record of 12 wins and 3 losses
i did put it in one of your other videos to check out kettering towns old stadium but i do not know if they have built on it or kept it up it has been a couple of years since i last saw it and still unsure if it will be still standing at this point. there is also the nene park stadium also not too far away either unsure if that is still standing either. the new york stadium reminds me like a mixture of stadium mk and leigh sports village. great video keep up the good work 👍
I DM'd you on Instagram recommending you do this video, I don't know if it had any influence on whether you did or not but I am happy to see and excited to watch :) :)
Quite sad to see this place knocked down. Made it down at the start of the COVID season. So much character and fit with its surroundings. Quite a shame.
Sad to see my wee team from down souths old ground like that. Happy memories from there, but as they say, onwards and upwards!! From a St Johnstone fan North of the border.
Attended the last league game at Bootham Crescent. 4-0 loss to Bristol Rovers. As a gashead really pleased York have got their new stadium and hope Bristol Rovers can follow in the not too distant future as aware the minstermen were waiting a while for theirs which we can really identify with. Shame to see a proper football stadium shut down but it was the worst football stadium I’ve visited - at least at league level. Thought I was going to get tetanus from the terracing rails if I touched them. Toilets were a gutter in a shed - very old school. The match itself was very memorable as it was the game before what is now our less memorable automatic promotion from League 2 😂. Quality goals from Billy Bodin on the day. Rumours rippled through the terraces that Accrington were drawing, when they weren’t at all. lining us up for a crazy 92nd minute winner on the final day of the season when Accrington failed to beat Stevenage.
Really poetic especially in the current football climate. The old stadium; in the middle of the town where the working class would live The new stadium; in the urban area of the town where the rich used to live (probably)
I used to work at Bootham Crescent (at that point, the KitKat Stadium) as a steward. Loved EVERY minute of it, despite the ground’s failing infrastructure.
I remember that York had a really good team during the mid 80's. They knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup on this ground, in 1985. A late penalty by Keith Houchen, who went on to score one of the greatest ever FA Cup Final goals for Coventry, a couple of years later.
You should take a trip to Stoke and visit our old Victoria Groind site. It’s a new build housing estate now but they’ve named the streets after former players and I even think there is a house where the centre circle was. There is also sweetings field that is Stokes first home. It’s now a graveyard.
Went to the ground twice to watch Oxford United play York after they got back into the football league and the away terrace was very uneven crumbling away but was fun
Im sure you would have been to Partick Thistle's stadium in Maryhill , they used to play in Partick and their stadium was where the Morrisons now is next to the Partick underground
Rugby LEAGUE, please. It's a joint ground. York Rugby League spent miserable years as Ryedale-York, playing way out on the edge of the c.ity after their old Clarence Street ground more or less crumbled. They are in much better hands now, and York City Council finally pulled its finger out in support of both clubs. They are now a highly competitive club in the Championship (the second tier of rugby league) at the new ground. That's the men's team. York are top of the Women's Super League as I write, one of three teams (with Leeds and St. Helens) raising the women's game to new heights., as will be seen in November's world cup. This new ground is buzzing, especially with their star-studded women's side.
"Lost their soul"? That was harsh. You mean that the spanking new stadium and bags of canadian billionaire dollars would make us lose our souls? 🙂 The sad truth is that the clubs that doesnt evolve will be left adrift. It is what it is. It's modern football for you. Thank you for another interesting and fun video. 👍
It actually says that the development is for the Dumcombe Barracks ground, which is behind Bootham Cresent. So not a plan for development on the old stadium
It's a constant war in York between the clueless and inept Council and rapacious property developers. The "York Eye" site behind the station has been mostly derelict for years, I think the British Sugar Corporation site is still derelict too.
FYI there's free car parking in all these little streets around the stadium so anyone going to York should park there then walk 10 mins into the centre instead of paying £4 an hour in the car parks 😁 Also it had the best pitch in Yorkshire 😁
I was born in Bootham crescent and I recall we had to move cars far from homes So that players from played away games could park there coaches, outside our homes and windows was smashed fights in the street police escorts from the train station to the ground a chap called Nev Kendal ran the football club and then a chap called Shane land cross the road was the bootham crescent working man’s club was ran by Mr door who had two sons one daughter one son was Steve the other I think Fred loved growing up there from birth till my mum passed away so from 1966to 2022
Only a few months ago you could get into the ground through the red turnstiles and now the turnstiles have been bolted as people caught on to people sneaking in
Another great old historic stadium gone, to be replaced by a non descript plastic seated construct. The only consolation for the youngsters I suppose, is what they never had they'll never miss.
