Huddersfield's stadium is bordering on iconic. They thought out of the box and avoided the 'done to death' goldfish bowl stadium. It's certainly not ugly.
I agree the inclusion of Huddersfield's stadium is bizarre. The worst stadiums are these ones that don't have a stand at all either behind the goals or along the side of the pitch.
100% agree, even more so as a Brighton fan,as the basis of the design of the Amex was based on Huddersfield, and having visted Huddersfield,I would say it is one of my favourite grounds that I have visted.Weird though there were no southern grounds in it,Sutton would be a contender, although to be fair,I am one that always enjoys visting any ground and always thinks that any quirky bits etc add to the character.
@@FLAMEGRILL55as a town fan it’s certainly unique but you can see the progression from ours to boltons then yours. There are some major design flours with.our ground and it needs a lot of work on it but I wouldn’t have it as one of the ugliest tbf
I've always thought Huddersfield was a rather nice-looking stadium with some decent pubs in the town. As for Grimsby I've been a few times and had a great time with some memorable pies at halftime.
The John Smith's stadium won the prestigious RIBA building of the year when opened, voted for by all the top British architects. As far as I'm aware it's the only stadium to win the award. Bolton, Brighton and many other stadiums around the world have since used its blueprint. TalkShite by name, TalkShite by nature.
"Little" Huddersfield's ground was designed by HOK |(now Populous) a USA based multi national architectural practice with it's European Headquarters in London. It was built by Sir Alfred McAlpine and the basic arch design was later adopted by many clubs - and was also the inspiration for the Wembley Arch, often credited to Norman Foster, and as said below, also the Sydney Olympics. It was the first of it's type and won an RIBA award when first built. Bolton used the same Architects and it was built by Birse Construction.
One of the best away days I ever had was at Grimsby back in 92/93 when Newcastle won the 1st Division (Championship), fantastic day out, and night match. I've been to Milan, Barcelona, Kiev, Turin, all the big English stadiums but that night was special, and def one of my favs.
"Cleethorpes is the Barcelona of England", said with a straight face...you are a Legend! But at the same time, yes, in some way that which is ugliest, is often also captivating, and in its own way really attractive. Marvellous!
Had one of the friendliest away trips ever in Grimsby. A local pub welcomed away fans and even put on free food for us. OK, you had to duck down to see the crossbar at the far side of the pitch due to the low roof, but I've been on a lot worse ground.
Huddersfield is a strange choice. Been there a few times as an away fan. Quite unique for a modern stadium. More interesting than Leicester, Southampton, hull etc.
I find the "ugly" stadiums more charming. They're most likely out of date, and have a unique feel. Even if they can't stay up and get relegated after this season, seeing Luton Town in the Premier League is fun. Just seeing all of the Prem. mainstays playing at the Kenny is cool for a year.
The villa bought all the terraced houses to extend the now called Doug Ellis stand previously known as the Witton lane. However they made sure people were re homed and the street was cleaned up as well as sports facilities for the locals kids to use. Some of the terrace house still exist and I believe everyone was happy with how Aston Villa went about this redevelopment. They do plough a lot of money into the area they exist on.
Same at Anfield. The Sir Kenny stand used to be the Kremlin Road stand. All the houses in Kremlin Road were bought up by the club, demolished and the Centenary stand was built. Now the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand.
@@Petersworld77 There was a lot of bad feeling when that happened from locals. They felt that LFC went about it in the wrong way. Some people are still very bitter and angry!
Was just watching Welcome to Wrexham and was a nice surprise to see you on there sharing some wisdom. From a humble Bolton Wanderers RU-vidr to sharing the screen with Ryan Reynolds. Pretty cool.
I think you confuse "ugly" with being full of character, where Blundell Park is concerned. Proper club, proper fans. It may not be to the taste of plastic fans of Premier League clubs, but if you want a taste of footballing history I'd recommend a visit to Cleethorpes especially under the floodlights. Great video and thanks for bringing attention to our club. UTM! 😊
Hi, just come across your RU-vid channel. Enjoyed the video……..as someone who has done 83 of the 92 , I believe there is no such thing as a bad stadium…..Ugly, sure - but every town and ground is unique and carries a lot of sentimentality to many and I enjoy visiting them all
@@paultilly It changes, due to the ‘newer’ clubs that come into the league….. The BIG ones I need to do are Valley Parade and Portman Road…..plus Fleetwood, Barrow, Morecambe, Burton, Grimsby, Sutton, Cambridge
@@michaelhardy7867You're some way ahead of me. I've done about 67 out of 92. My chief hit list is the 25 that I haven't been to that were in the Football League when I started in the 80s. They are Bournemouth,Brentford,Bury,Cambridge,Carlisle*,Chester,Chesterfield,Colchester,Darlington,Exeter,Gillingham,Grimsby,Halifax,Hartlepool,Hereford,Lincoln,Mansfield,Newport,Northampton,Rochdale,Shrewsbury**,Stockport,Torquay,Wrexham and York. * I've stopped off to take a walk round the outside of this ground and peer inside (love the blue multi-span roof stand) but not been into it. ** I visited it out of curiosity one day and they showed me round! Very kind of them. Helped that I pulled up in their car park in a Jag.
Often a favourite pub quiz question, the only team to play all their home matches away is Grimsby as the stadium is in the neighbouring Cleethorpes. Technically a completely different town, but nothing obvious to separate them as they blend into each other.
Tho I believe the Chester ground is still technically in Cheshire & not quite in Flintshire, if we're going on technicalities they also play all home games Away as they're in another country
The Manchester United ground is in the Borough of Trafford, and the Nottingham Forest ground is in the Borough of Rushcliffe. Ironically, the Notts County ground is in Nottingham!
@@JFHM95 Exactly, Queens Park Rangers are in White City, West Ham are in Stratford, Arsenal play in Holloway, we could go on. Brentford is in Hounslow, that’s a joke by the way, in spite of the song the Gtech is in Brentford.
"I feel like I've stepped into a 70s football culture museum...it's not an especially incredible one but..." 😂😂That was brilliant, especially with that look.
I saw REM at the Huddersfield stadium before it was even finished for football. They still had the stand at the other goal end to build. It was ideal for a concert since you can just put your stage where the empty space is. At that time it was a refreshing pleasant stadium and a great venue on a baking hot day.
Great video. Ive watched 4 or 5 of your vids today and thoroughly enjoy your style and dry humour. And some great music too, Rush, Purple, Skynyrd and Blue Oyster Cult all popped up❤
On a Sunday I like to THANK people for making life complete and your vlogs go a long way to doing this, I know it takes a lot to do these things(And I hope BBC/ITV/Channel 5 are taking note)you smash them out of the park each and every vlog. Love to you and your family, hope this goes from strength to strength xxx
Your sense of humour is brilliant. I found your channel when you featured my local team St. Mirren. Hopefully you can make it north of the border again soon!
I get grimsby is not the best place to visit but Blundell park is amazing I am born and raised in Grimsby I have been to Blundell park many times and in my opinion we have the best fans in league two and like I said we might not be the best team in the world but grimsby town is trying up the mariners
You should try Priestfield! Gillingham ground is terrible! That for me is the worst stadium I've watched them in and I must me a jinx as every time I go the Gills lose 🤣
As someone from Grimsby, find it surprising but not surprising that Blundell Park is on this list as theres other stadiums out there. But its nice to see its getting recognition from someone as yourself
Anyone remember when that band Orphan Boy wrote the song "Black and White" for Grimsby Town... with the bloke dancing his pants off in the vid? "Those lovers sittin' on a bench at Blundell park..." Top tune to be fair.
This would be an interesting topic to cover overseas as well. I watched a Serie A game in Fiorentina’s stadium (Stadio Artemio FranchI) and loved the game and the view of the Tuscan hills but the stadium isn’t easy on the eyes.
My uncle before he passed away went to the Barcelona derby (Barcelona V Espanyol) at Espanyols stadium. He bought a box for the game and had a great time. Then for his final ever football game he went too Boundary Park (he’s from Oldham) and he also had a box there and according too him the boxes at Boundary Park were better than the boxes at the RCDE Stadium. You’ll never sing that
Great crowd and atmosphere at Blundell Park. I've been plenty of times and never seen them lose - which is incredible really. Seen a few draws, mind. There's also a blue plaque on a terraced house on the main road nearby, saying that the guy who wrote "Thriller" (and a couple of other tracks off the same album) was born there. #unexpected
One of my favorite away grounds, brilliant atmosphere from the home fans. Admittedly it had just been taken over, by the crazy dude, it was a great away day, home fans going mental, best home crowd ive seen as a Bromley fan.
Hi, just come across your RU-vid channel. Enjoyed the video and i saw you have a shirt from my club Riga fc. I didnt know anyone would know about us as far out as england thank you for the support
7000 attendance in fifth tier seems great. For another video idea, you could go to other teams at lower levels with high attendance. That might be fun to see the highest attendance teams in the national league, for example.
I like how you try soooo hard to keep your Dale biases to one side....I think I heard you mention pooping in Oldham Athletic's letterbox 😂😂 Another great video! Does this mean we'll get a 5 prettiest stadiums video? Might get you to Home Park this way 😊
Have you ever thought about contacting the clubs to get a view inside of the stadiums? I think a lot of clubs would actually let you inside and show you around, im sure they would actually be fond of being able to negate some of these negative claims PS: if you ever come to austria, be sure to hit me up, i can help you out
Quite agree can’t knock Grimsby ground about got to keep the culture..I was lucky enough to visit loads of grounds in 80s (well over 100 all with Pompey) before all seater you would of loved those Fellows park Walsall comes to mind it seemed to be all different bits with a 60s style subbuteo fence
Great content as ever Nieve...Love your humour and your natural ability on camera...Keep up the great content and looking forward to your next video...👏🏻⚽️👏🏻⚽️
As an American, I don't see ugly I see history and character. At least your football isn't played in baseball stadiums where the seating makes no sense and with a baseball diamond in the middle of the pitch.
Agree with your thoughts on Oldham, but as you say we’ve had bigger issues. I think the care and improvement will come over the next few years and we will rocket up (down?) this ranking
What would you do to it though that would improve it in any meaningful way? Rotting wooden doors and window frames that look like an ancient potting shed as well as ancient bricks that wouldn’t look out of place in the 1930’s. It needs knocking down by the looks of it.
@@user-cy5lz2mi5j You can buy terraced housing and knock it down. That’s what Blackburn had to do for their new stadium when they were building the new one to win the Premier League in. The house owners got decent money and the new stadium was built, although I do accept it would be hard for smaller clubs to do that.
4:57 my uncle actually lives there or near to it anyway, he goes and watches the Latics every so often, I think you may have just offended him lol. Anyway, as someone who is originally from Oldham, cheers for saying something positive about my hometown club! The stadium recently got a new pitch and the Joe Royle stand has been refurbished all thanks to our chairman Frank's investments and from next year it will also see the Roughyeds, our rugby league club, return for the first time in 15 years. Keep the Faith and up the Yeds! Much love :)
Stunt Pegg une fois de plus merci pour cette très belle visite guidée du stade on en apprend et on en découvre toujours ce n’est que du bonheur force courage et santé surtout
As a southerner, this TalkSport list seems to have a northern bias. Huddersfield and Chester should be nowhere near the top of their list. Perhaps they have not been to Luton! As for lowest ground in the counry, Canvey Island FC is actually below sea level.
I went to Bolton's stadium once, when Frank Lampard scored a hat trick there in 2011. It wasn't the most interesting stadium but it was easy to get to from the train station.
UTA Arad's stadium in Romania is a mini Huddersfield one (13000 seats) , but for us in Romania it's fine, given that we've started to have five star Uefa stadiums (plural) only since around 2010. Though compared to the other 11 five star stadiums it might be the worst.
Pegg, great video!! Of course there will always be "best of" and "worst of" lists, it's what gets attention. But, as your video so aptly illustrates, even the so-called "worst" stadiums are not bad at all; they have an appeal that evoke many expressions, including charm and nostalgia. They illustrate the very real fact that English football inspires fans like me who call it "soccer" and have only had the pleasure to visit the grounds at Notts County and Nottingham Forest. Keep up the great work!!
