Jack Burgess is a well known model railroader who has written many articles featured in model railroad magazines for the past 40 years. He is also known for his work documenting the history and operations of the Yosemite Valley Railroad in his definitive, but now out-of-print book, "Trains to Yosemite."
This video represents the result of months of planning, four working days of production, and countless hours of post production work... and we hope it will be seen by all as the ultimate tour of Jack's truly museum-quality masterpiece of a layout.
Not only do you get details about the HO Scale layout and the places that are modeled on it, but you also get to hear some of the thought processes that went into creating it; with some historical and operational tidbits about the YVRR included for good measure.
After the layout tour, Jack shares some of his scratch-built models and takes us into his workshop, explaining his methodology and showing how he designs models on his computer for 3D printing. Jack also talks about how he uses photos, blueprints, and other types of plans to get prototype accuracy.
Jack has a regular program on this channel. You can see it here: • Model Railroading with...

The important thing to remember about Jack's work is that its not only done for the hobby of modeling, but as much so for the sake of preserving and interpreting the history of the Yosemite Valley Railroad. The YV had all but faded into history until Jack found interest in it, and it is thanks to him and those who have followed in his footsteps that the railroad is one of the more modeler-friendly prototype shortlines to build. There's a lot of history to this line, and its a very special thing for Jack to have been able to bring so much attention back to it. Its a lot more than just a layout, its the closest you'll ever get to seeing what the YV was really like.

A Time Machine! Burgess is a scale god. As a kid looking across the Merced River at the old roadbed as we went to and from “the valley”, I used to imagine the railroad in its heyday. Dad was a seasonal ranger in the 60’s, so we drove the “all year highway” often, back before highway 120 was improved. The buildings and side canyon bridges are perfect: I remember them. What a treat. God bless.

While it's easy to say "he's a great modeller, great skills, etc...", it should be noted the most interesting aspect of Jack's work is his extreme coherence, self-control and dedication. Instead of getting distracted by everything he could fancy, he stayed true to his initial goal, which is probably why he completed his project to such a level. Without this incredible discipline, he wouldn't have achieved such a powerful project. And as he stated it himself in the video, reaching that goal within his own personal constraints are what forced him to develop his skills. I find it much more inspiring... Now, I hope he will tweak is decoder with a bit of momentum because the locomotives starts and stops quite abruptly, breaking the otherwise seamless illusion of reality. Thanks for taking the time to document in video Jack's railroad! ;-)

When I met Jack about ten years ago, I was about 13 and had pretty much just started modeling. I remember on one of my visits bringing one or two of my "models" (toys back then, really.....) to show him. Several years later, I remarked to Jack about how awful my work was back then, but I realized just how much I had improved. I like to think my skills are growing closely in line with the journey Jack has been on, though I have quite a ways to go. My point being, no one starts out being a gifted modeler, or gifted at anything, really. It takes a lot of patience, time, and practice to become good at anything, and I think Jack's efforts are a prime example of that and one that I have taken great inspiration in, myself. On a cheeky little side note, I look forward to the next time I get to show Jack some of my models and how far they have come!

To Jack Burgess and TSG: Thanks for your dedication to our hobby and for bringing this amazing work of art to life. Not everyone has this kind of focus or determination...or the gifts needed to bring such a vision to reality and oftentimes we become discouraged in our pursuits, but seeing a profile of a person for whom the stars have aligned is a very encouraging thing indeed. Perhaps one of the most subtle beauties in this portrait is that Mr. Burgess has been allowed to describe his passion and work in his own words and with his own voice...it removes the clutter of two or more minds trying to communicate, and allows just one to guide and inspire us. What is not apparent is the production work of the videographers and their professionalism which shows throughout this program... and combined with Mr. Burgess has given all of us enjoyment and inspiration.

@@yvfan Thank you for the gracious invitation, and the complement, Mr. Burgess. When I was a very young boy, my family traveled twice to see Yosemite National Park in the mid 1960s. Later, I read of the Yosemite Valley Railroad and it's connection to the Park. Over the years I read of your modeling and have been amazed by your dedication to every detail in order to recreate the Railroad that helped give birth to the Park. Although it is unlikely that I will be ever able to visit your layout in person, thanks to you and TSG, I have been able to not only experience it and a few of the stories of the people of the YV that no doubt inspired you build your master piece. Model Railroading as a hobby is often not taken seriously as an art form, but for me it is as it is a portal through which we can glimpse the lives and work of others and give them honor by bringing awareness to their own passions... Passions and labor that help enrich our own lives. Giving such honor to those before us is perhaps one of the greatest things we can do as mere mortals... because by remembering thru story telling, images and animation we come as close to God as we can. We can't grant eternal life... but it is said that one does not die until they are forgotten, so you are doing very well at helping us all remember and become more aware of lives that have touched so many of us. What can I say, except that I am simply in awe of the beauty you have brought forth in your pursuit of the hobby of model railroading. Sincerely, Bruno Biava ⚓

@@yvfan I honestly don't know, Jack... except to say that I hope your Yosemite Valley is preserved when that time comes so that the history and legacy that you're now a part of can continue to teach and inspire not just modelers but those that have visited or have roots in the region the YV served. Yosemite is one of America's most loved National Parks and the YV gave access to it that to this day has an impact on everyone that gazes at El Capitan. The awareness We share of Yosemite is not just the work of Muir, it's gift passed to us by many hands, including the employees of the YV... and you. As I have said, I am blessed enough to have seen Yosemite National Park twice, and I will likely never see it again in person. I am too young to have seen the Charming little railroad that helped make Yosemite accessable...but I know of the link that so many are unaware of today, and I can only hope that you and your work are recognized and preserved for future generations to learn from and admire. The mystique of Yosemite is in a balance of majesty and charm. The Park overflows in majesty.... the railroad was as charming as it could be. Thanks to you, the mystique is still alive... you helped me to experience it and to remember my own family's adventures there again. Bruno ⚓

Truly outstanding---, and the Sketch-up display and 3-D printing work, as well as the experimentation, most enlightening. Thanks.

Scenery, rolling stock, structures and operations all closely based on the real thing. And even with correct scale speeds. What's not to love here?

A recent trip to Yosemite up 140 got me to wondering about the abandoned grade across the river. A quick Google search later revealed the YV railroad. This video of Jack's model railroad is a great representation of what once was. And what an epic representation it is! I'm gonna have to find Jack's book now.

Thanks for watching. Last time I checked, the book was available used for $175 on Amazon!

That is actually a good price. The original price was $65 in 2005 but they sold out in 2011. Abe's Books has two used copies for $250.00. They had a new copy for $795 a year ago but apparently sold it.

It is extremely interesting to look at what a part of the Railroading world looked like back when I was born on August 7, 1939 ! We lived a half mile from the Norwood & St. Lawrence RR engine house in Norfolk, NY. This was an 18 mile RR hauling Pulpwood from docks at Waddington, NY to a NYC Connection in Norwood, NY. Until 1955 and the purchase of a pair of GE 70 ton Diesels, they ran with a pair of 70 ton 2-6-0 Steamers purchased new in 1925, one Baldwin and one American Loco. The American engine is at Steamtown in Scranton having been saved by Nelson Blount. As a teenager in the early '50's I spent a lot of time at the Norfolk Engine House, rode the trains frequently and even ran engines from the House a quarter mile to the water plug on High Street and back to the shed in evenings after school. Your layout sparked vivid memories. Love your technology for print producing models.
