Not ready for the big leagues. Doubling the solar and A/C charge rate would help immensely. LIPO4 has proven itself safe and reliable, so I’ll stick to those units until the solid state units mature more. Plus I’ll save some money.

Whatever weight advantage solid state may have, it sure isn't being expressed in Yoshino's product line. LiFePO batteries of similar Wh ratings weigh the same or *significantly* less, at approximately the same physical unit size. (Up to a whole kilo difference between an ECOFLOW 256Wh unit and Yoshino's 241Wh unit. -And at half the price point.) Solid State may have some decent qualities yet to be exploited, but they're not here yet. Glad to see the technology being given a shot, though.

I remember Prouse doing a safety test on some solid state cells! Didn't end well! 🔥 Sodium iron is the safest! But it has a weird charge and discharge curve and it sits around 17.2 volts SOC which inverters don't like!

So no more Dendrite Growth in the Battery, No More Explosion Factor when it gets old and I can keep recharging it for years more with very low Degradation, sounds like a good deal

Isn’t a solid state battery supposed to charge much faster than regular Lithium ion battery?

It stays stable for much much longer, for many years you can keep recharging with low battery degradation and it doesnt Explode when it gets old and the dendrites grow out of control and puncture the battery

Ahhh... Yoshino might be a scam. My opinion. They say that they pack solid state batteries, but the weight, capacity, and specs are no better than a LiFePO4 power stations. In fact, the stats are extremely lackluster and unimpressive in general. And they charge a premium for those lack-luster specs. I am not convinced that these contain solid state cells and if they did they aren't any better than LiFePO4. -Matt

I'd be extremely surprised if they aren't using SS cells - surely SOMEONE would have made a very public revelation of that fact...and I actually DID search before I accepted the invitation to review the unit, because I had the same concern. Came up with nothing. And they didn't just start shipping this product line super recently. They've been on the market since well into last year. In any case, I may have to see if I can non-destructively (or not) get into it and see for myself. I'll certainly report back if I find anything worth reporting.

@@ReeWrayOutdoors They are likely ether condensed matter (aka gel electrolyte) CATL cells, or generic LiFePO4. Or even worse, NMC. Someone would have to tear the thing apart to get a charging profile for the BMS+cell pack with all the other power electronics out of the loop, read off cell IDs, and even potentially tear apart a cell (which can be rather dangerous to do which is why cell tear-downs are not done by enthusiast youtube reviewer channels. Only by actual chemists or actual battery EEs). In anycase, nothing about the company makes any sense. Their web pages are static and don't seem to get updated, they are pairing bottom-of-barrel-cheap power electronics with supposedly high-end battery cells, unit weights don't imply a high power density. Very limited current caps. Nothing makes sense. None of this points to the use of actual solid-state cells. It's probably marketing nonsense. And even if they were, the units are no better on any metric than LiFePO4 would be. Nobody should be wasting their money paying a premium for this brand. -Matt

@@ReeWrayOutdoors seems like an expected result, just don’t know if that is the same battery, maybe if the tested battery was compared to one from a tear down and confirmed to be the same. That being said I understand not wanting to destroy a nice piece of tech you have been gifted with or purchased yourself. Guess we will have to wait for a test from JerryRigEverything. He seems to really like tearing things up.

Having external AC power supply / charger vs. internal. I don't think I've ever had a power brick fail. Ever. For anything. In ~30 years. Maybe I'm just lucky. A much more common pro / con would be if it is internal you have to lug that weight around when you carry the power station. If external that is a choice. And for many uses (like camping) it would be unnecessary.

Thanks for the review. I do not believe that the 5521 barrel connector is made to handle 10A, 5A is about the most for 5521. I also wonder why they have NEMA 5-20R AC outlets.

This is for early adopters who like to be on the cutting edge of technology. As a functioning unit, it's mediocre. As a glimpse of what's probably to come in the future, it's intriguing. As with almost any other kind of technology, I'd wait for the 3.0 version.

If Yoshino makes their own solid state batteries, they're way ahead of the competition so I guess that's why their power stations are premium priced. Also, if Yoshino makes their own solid state batteries, why haven't they made ones for EVs and mobile devices since that could potentially increase their profits 10X or maybe more? I would love to swap the lithium ion battery in my iPhone 15 pro max for a solid state battery bigtime.
@Tethmes
@Tethmes 22 дня назад
Solid state production capacity just isn't at the levels to produce for EV and mobile devices yet. Hell, they can't even produce enough to keep these power banks in stock. Been a few weeks since prime days sale and the 330 is still unavailable. The price that SS is currently at would be a prohibitive factor for those applications at this point too. It's definitely coming, but mass market on that scale is still years away unfortunately.

Just don't get the whole power brick thing. So easy to misplace a cable as opposed to a brick. Sending a power station away for a month or more is a really big downside. I actually prefer the brick one less component to go wrong on the inside. To each his own on that one. Unit is pricey and solar charging is ridiculous. Did they have to severally limit charging because it is solid state? Smarter people then me know that answer.
@junkerzn7312
@junkerzn7312 2 месяца назад
The limits are basically just low-balling the design. The cells themselves (no matter the chemistry) are not that severely limited. And I seriously doubt the battery cells are actually solid state in the first place. Insofar as the AC brick goes... when power stations first came onto the market having an external brick was fairly common, but those bricks are annoying as heck once you've collected a few (I have at least a hundred in my pile now, over the years). Most people far, far prefer just plugging a standard computer AC cable directly into the unit. I got piles of those too, but at least computer power cables are all interchangeable. There isn't really anything that can burn-up with an internal AC adapter. It is literally just a transformer, rectifier, and a capacitor. Like three parts. Ok, four if we include the internal safety fuse. AC bricks are basically used in designs to avoid having to have UL AC testing done on the unit as a whole. The brick is purchased with all the certifications already done. Useful for quick-and-dirty designs but annoying otherwise. -Matt
@johnmal5975
@johnmal5975 2 месяца назад
@@junkerzn7312 A brick would not deter me either way. However, not having reasonable solar input pretty much just makes the unit in the video a really super small battery that you can't even charge. I have several units as well but they have to be rechargeable to be truly useful. Thank you for the info. on the bricks good stuff!
