Here's my 3 step process for learning how to speed read/read faster: broken down into as much detail as I can. I genuinely think it's such a valuable tool to have in your toolbox and one you can pick up and learn with just a few minutes of practice. It should hopefully help with reading more, reading faster, or scoring higher in exams. Hope it helps!

I’m listening to your video now at 1.25x speed and I still can understand you. You speak fast already. As a sound and video editor, I have got use to listen to audio or watching a video 2x the normal speed.

It may be the case that she speeds up the video slightly (even up to 15% still sounds natural) when she edits it. I do this with some videos I edit because of this reason that you state, it kinda feels good that there is zero time wasted as you're consuming the information. Feels good.

Step 1 - train your eyes. Focus your eyes on the centre of the line and use your peripheral vision to read the rest of the line Step 2 - train your brain. Practice reading at 70-80% comprehension when speed reading. You can improve comprehension by visualising the meaning of what you are reading (practice on a text you haven't read before) Step 3 - train your focus (speed reading is tiring) - make your environment as comfortable as possible. Pick books with a larger font. Adjust the screen brightness where appropriate. You can even listen to the audiobook whilst reading the text! Use your finger to trace on each line. Don't speed read too much

Pro-tip, you can increase the speed of her videos too. Start on 1.25x, then in a week set it to 1.5x. You can get used to faster speeds.

I took a speed reading class in high school 50 years ago, and agree with most of this. At this point reading most fiction is like watching a movie and doesn't take much energy. The only down side is when reading something "literary" with beautiful language I have to consciously slow down and read every word, which takes a lot of concentration! I've been slowing down as I get older and am only reading 3-4 books a week, versus the 7-8 I read when younger. It's a skill well worth training.

Hi, i am very new to this topic, just stumbled in here but doesnt it depend on how much words are written more than about books? have read 13 books in a week because i found a favorite sci-fi universe but they were roughly ... i think 120 up to 200 sides with medium sized font. Fairly like the book shes holding in the video, some thicker.

I’ve tried speed reading before and stopped when I realized I didn’t fully understand what I was reading. Being comfortable with comprehension loss was something I struggled with, but now that you say it’s a part of the process that should be challenged later on, it makes me excited to try again. I think you read with comprehension loss as you exercise. I try to do some training with less interesting books only to improve my reading skills. Your speed will increase with time.

our brain could possibly be designed to handle challenging stuff. not overwhelming or underwhelming. therefore we feel bored to slow read books. if we are getting on to something that's meaningful. we see that its' not entirely boring and we can go through the process of reading any book if its comprehensible and challenging. i have found that keeping a book far away so i can see the whole paragraph like a unit and words hard to see has helped me me create sustained focus. similar to be able to understand music and lyrics when i listen to them at 15 20 volume for audible comprehension which i couldn't do when i would just blast it loud and i wouldn't get nothing.

Can I make a suggestion. For audio books, you can change the speed to 1.7x or slightly higher to match your speed reading technique. As you follow the book and listen to the audio you work your reading and listening skills which combine to 80% of retention. I feel this will help you out tremendously.

Most people speak waaay too slow for me to listen to and retain focus for extended periods of time, I typically put a video at 2x speed (or higher, if the player supports it). Props to Elizabeth, I had to start at 1.5x speed and get used to it before going to 1.75 speed. Normally, I only slow down if the individual has a thick accent, but she just spoke so fast and so fluidly that I actually had to use a slower speed than my norm.

I periodically revisit the idea of speed reading (I'm a natually slow reader), but I usually revert to my normal patterns. This video is different from many other speed-read-advice videos. Many teachers focus on the eye- and brain- training, but I like the extra attention you give to managing Focus. It's also good that you acknowledge that different subjects demands different levels of attention. I think it's time to give speed reading another go-- thanks for posting!

Also you can skip ahead that actually helps, like if you feel the droning on jump ahead a little not by a lot normally by a sentence or paragraph at max.

The only thing I've automatically learned when i started reading was the visualizing like it is happening right in front of you. I read my first few books in 3 days but now i can read a 500 page book in 7/8 hours if not faster. What also really helps is not taking everything written literally and just skip something if you don't really understand because 90% of the time it's not even important. And make sure to put your phone or any device on silent because if the book is getting a little boring and your brain is searching for something to distract you with, that's the first thing your hand will reach for when you get a notification of literally anything.

THANK YOU! I am 43, and while I love reading and remember EVERY detail, I read the speed of a 3rd grader so I never finish any books. Luckily I am a good tester because reading college assignments in the time given was not even an option for me. I have tried and failed so many programs and videos over the decades. In 15 minutes you just changed my life. This, combined with the OpenDyslexia font on Kindle, and I just read 10% of a book I have been trying to finish for years in less than 30 minutes. I will keep practicing but thank you so so much. BTW it was bouncing between the 2 vertical lines that no other program mentioned that really helped me get it, and the fact that you prepared me that I wouldn’t retain everything at first.

Thank you for this video. Most people who push speed reading act like it's some superpower that you can just "hack" and then apply everywhere. I really appreciate that you point out the downsides - your comprehension may drop to just 70%, and it's really effing exhausting because it requires your complete focus. As a master student, i'm greatly struggled with reading a lot of materials for my courses and my paper. I have always imagined scenes in a book while reading. Like I am witnessing the whole thing myself. Or even putting myself as one of the characters. Also, when it comes to studying, I study languages. It helps me imagine all the grammatical connections and links and imagine myself using them in real life. Thank you so much!

I love this comment! I do the same thing, while reading a book I imagine the things I'm reading. At least I used to do this when I was younger. Recently, I've been doing it a little less.. I think I might have undiagnosed ADD (attention deficit disorder), and so whenever I don't imagine the text as I read it, I don't focus at all. Like, I read, but my brain doesn't process the information whatsoever. Personally, I found that reading while imagining was much more fun; it made reading more enjoyable and easier. I don't see how anyone could read anything and retain the information without imagining it. P.S. I love studying languages too :)

@@Shiri_Yam same - I actually thought that’s how reading works for everyone - you read these characters/words/sentences and they convert into images/impressions in the mind :) It’s also another reason I find it hard to understand when my coaching clients ask me *how* to visualize certain goals/scenes … I don’t know how to explain it because the image either pops up on its own or I consciously construct it and see it in my mind :)))

I took a speed reading course a number of years ago. It contained all of the techniques you are describing here, plus it had another section which was all about taking notes effectively using imagery. I really does work. It requires sustained effort, and the progress must be maintained, otherwise you will lose your gains, just as it is with physical exercise. It is well worth it, though. Other factors were your emotional, state, your state of alertness, your physical posture whilst reading, the lighting, your physical health as well, the type of text (as you mention) and a few other things as well. All of these things influence each other. The course I took did not mention anything about using an audiobook as an aid, though. At the time they were saying that we were aiming to accelerate our brains to function at a high-speed internet connection instead of regular speed one. You can now tell that this course was given in the early 2000s, which is now quite a while ago, lol. This same course has no doubt been modernized since then. Cheers! xD

I am "monocular" - born with vision in only one eye. Reading has always been slow. I have a daily email I enjoy. Tried the "focus on the center of the page" tip a couple of times, then read the article as usual and was pretty surprised at how much I caught faster. Definitely going to work on this more!!!

A lot of things you talk about reinvigorate my journey on a deep level. I had a mental break down about 3 years ago and something in my brain just clicked. I was a network engineer for tesla with no official schooling not even a freshman year. But id go out and seek the knowledge on my own. I started ingesting quantity over quality to drastically summarize everything and fell into a identity crises among a lot of stuff chasing me from my childhood and how i would outlet those into other relationships. Still on this damn journey without finding my niche and i absolutely appreciate your efforts you put into your videos. You arent just informing but youre making this path seem less lonely and pointless.

Visualization is the biggest key point when speed reading. 100% agreed on that part. People tend to stray away from speed reading just because the lost of comprehension. I tend to fall on that area too. But combining speed read with visualization really helps a ton. Also if you’re practicing on a book that you want to speed read. Read something that peak your interest and try to finish it while practicing to speed read. After a while you can pretty much read anything with enjoyment because you have the skills to do it.

Great tips. A great percentage of books I read now are for enjoyment. I love language, and I love well written prose and poetry. I like to savor language. Speed reading is more of a mechanical process vs. an organic assimilation of language as a painting of ideas, feelings, and visual painting. I am betting we use a different part of our brain to speed read. I wish I had known your tips when I was going through college. I think I had my own techniques for getting through volumes of text; I just had never really thought about it.

thx for the tipps. I tried to speed read and it helped me to start from the back to the front of the book. Because often the authors write the summary of their thoughts at the end. And when I dont understand a point I can read so long to the front of the book as I like :).

Thanks, this is all great content for making book reading faster. I have further developed a way to speed listen. I get an audiobook, then speed it up to 2.5X the normal speed (my record is 3.5X but not for sustained periods of time because I get headaches). At 2.5X the normal speed, I've trained myself to envision chipmunks acting out all the scenes, then I've taken the time to train my brain to reinterpret the chipmunks back to the characters in the book. It's basically seamless now, I barely see the chipmunks anymore.

The second tip-build an image as you read-was the most innovative for me. I'd already learned about using peripheral vision for reading, and in fact try to read the entire line from the center of the line, with my eyes tracing only the center of the page (with varied success). For the last point, mental fatigue, I'm glad to hear that this feeling is not unique to me. I thought maybe I was just doing something wrong. 🙂 Thank you for the tips!

HI Mickey is the peripheral vision actually practical, even for academic content. I was trying the peripheral thingie for a while but stopped, as it not beign scientifically backed up cemented my doubt as to it being ineffective

Ms Filips noted at about the 6m point in the video (the "Train Your Brain" section) that one should not expect 100% comprehension, especially when starting out. If you need 100% comprehension-such as when studying material related to your course of specialty-then speed reading may not be appropriate.

Thank you for your content. I'm a slower reader myself, I'm inclined to read at about one and a half times the speed I speak. I've just always been that way. I actually enjoy that pace. Lately though, have had to get through, what is for me, a larger than usual amount of material for work purposes and I will try to employ your methods. So I have reading OCD where I basically reread stuff over and over again coz I'm scared I will miss something. It's gotten better since I started therapy for it but I'm so so SO glad to hear someone say that "speed reading is tiring" because it really does feel like a brain workout for me and I always thought that wasn't normal.. idk why now that I think about it but I always thought there was something wrong with my brain and that reading is supposed to be easy for everyone else

ADHD can sometimes be such a gift huh? I had a student in my class who had the exact same patterns that you’ve expressed in your videos and had such a wonderful capacity and hyper focus for reading and just doing everyday things.

This was an extremely good breakdown of speed reading that is practical and doable. There is a lot of speed reading videos where the advice seems to be nonsense like read 3 lines at once. The people who make them seem like there full of it. Your advice however seems real and I immediately tried it after the video and it helps a lot, thanks.

As a Ph.D in Cybersec, my tip for very technical and sciency books is text-to-speech, similar to what you do on RU-vid, you crank that bad boi 30-40-50% higher speed and buckle up. I absolutely love and agree with everything Elizabeth just described. I use TTS in addition, to complement and to extend my comprehension and how much I can build that mental image of very complicated systems

Thank you for the useful tips. I already use some of them. For example, I visualize things as I'm reading. And I like audiobooks too :) However I'd like to say that our peripheral vision is limited. At some point we can still see objects but we can't distinguish the text. So depending on the size of a page and the font of the text you have to move your eyes to an extent. We need to expand our central vision, I guess. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos. I feel happy when I see you. I'd love to meet you in person :)

I totally agree with 'visualizing what you read', its exactly why I sometimes prefer books rather than the movies they've turned into; simply because I visualized it on the way I personally want it to be 'directed' 😅 and so it sticks with me on a personal level, hence, it retains on my brain longer than usual

English is my second language. And I had never live or work or study in English. It's really hard for me to read in English. I haven't finished one book in English yet. I wish someday I can finish books in English every month.Using peripheral vision is like a gift. I can't do it no matter how many times I tried on purpose.

English is my second language too and if you want a humble advice, don't focus on your reading speed. When I started reading books, I was literally looking for words and idioms in every single paragraph. Never saw the point in focusing on how many books you read per year. What's the point of reading 200 books if you won't remember a quarter next year. Way better reading 50 books per year deeply (which is a huge amount) than reading 100 books just for the sake of reading a lot of books.

Nice idea, but does it work? she needs a benchmark included. At ~100 pages per hour normally(25-50 A4 format) i feel you don't need any better. And if it's at the speed of a regular audiobook, then it's not faster than normal!
