3:14 leaving us to want more is SO true bro.. I was working on some musty flicks yesterday and only for like 15 minutes and now I'm DYING to get more practice in. You're a legend bro, get this man more subs!
CBell love ya ❤️ also when I finished that beginning skit, I realized how much it felt like yours from that one video. So thanks for the inspiration that I didn’t even realize until now lol
I love the science-backed approach to this. It’s one thing when a good player says you should do something because it works for them, but it’s another beast entirely when you take a scientific approach. Keep it up, man!
I was playing way too much rocket league, it actually started to effect my day to day living. I was playing for over 6-8 hours. I feel shame, I have started to incorporate your tips today. I have not ranked up just two mmr more than yesterday. However I feel less tilted because my game sessions are way shorter and I took care of my health first before playing. Thank you for this content. I’m subscribed
I am loving your videos man, I come from the bodybuilding coach side, and started playing RL recently, didn't occur to me to apply the same principles I have been to BBing for the last 20 years. It was a huge "duh..." moment for me. I appreciate your content, and from 1 coach to another, I respect the quality and pride you take in your work.
Can i just say, I'm studying sports in college rn, and i might be completely wrong but damn being a coach as well as a sports psychologist is hard, you need to get a degree, you need a dbs check, you need a bunch of coaching qualifications depending on how high of a level you plan on coaching, which need to be recongised by the national governing bodies... Damn man respect. Who knew being a kid you had it so easy...
Thank you! but I will say i'm not a Sport Psychologist (masters degree required) but I'm certified in sport psychology coaching and have probably read as much literature in the field as someone with the masters. I'm working towards pursuing the masters, but i at least have tons of in the field experience, working with very high performance athletes for years now
Interesting take on things. Overtraining is very real but in the sense of gaming, I feel like your "tolerance" can grow. Drilling is important and takes a lot of time to develop the muscle memory to pull things off in game too. I'll likely try this out eventually. But there are a lot of mechanical weaknesses I have that I'd like to iron out too. To be fair, Michael Jordan practiced for 5-6 hours a day. Might seem like overkill but he built up his tolerance, probably shot his CNS at the beginning. But the human body is so good at adapting to what we throw at it. But I loved this video. Super interesting. Thanka for the perspective :)
DelayKnee tolerance is very real for all things, I definitely agree. I’m not saying to use this all the time, but using it in an interval can help mix things up. At the highest level, you need to practice a lot, but not all the time. Intention is really important. I think gaming in particular, it’s very easy for things to quickly fall into low intensity after a bit, zoning out in a game is a lot easier than zoning out in sport. This interval intends to just put a bit more intention towards your level of play I’m thinking of this, for the average player who is training a ton and isn’t seeing results, as a way to almost shock the system into having a lot more intention and intensity in their practices for a short amount of time before they go back to normal training. I agree with what you said though and I definitely could’ve made that a little bit more clear in the video. Thank you so much!
FlowStateGG Absolutely agree. Intentional, deliberate practice is the most important. And if you lose that in 3 hour training sessions, you're leaving potential on the table. I love your channel man. Quickly becoming a favorite RU-vidr. Need more unique perspectives like yours in the community.
@@FlowStateGG How would you feel about playing the same amount of time as you usually would but breaking it up more throughout the day. For example if you usually play approximately a single 2 hour and 15 minute session you could split that into 3 sessions that were 45 minutes long. Just curious what your take on that is.
another awesome vid. I have watched so many videos about getting good at rocket league and every creator talks about mechanics/rotations. Really cool to see training regiments that are designed to help your mind. I try to use rocket league as an opportunity to practice my mindfulness, but have been struggling. This channel has seriously clutched it for me.
Just found your channel, and I wish I would've found it a long time ago. I just binged about half of your videos tonight lol. Looking forward to practice tomorrow. Great content
This video is perfect for me, thank you so much! I had a habit of training for hours before an actual match because of my fear of losing. But with this video I realized that I shouldn't train too much, I should train smarter, not longer.
The production quality in these videos is insane for such a 'small' channel, and that's excluding the really great insight your content provided thanks to your profession. I have no doubt you'll start blowing up soon man, love this, keep up the good work 👌
Thanks for the great videos. I really appreciate having a coaches perspective so readily available in the form of these videos. We should all try not to take conveniences like this one for granted. 🙂
FlowStateGG Lol I’m on vacation after being deployed with the US military. So I’ve spend the last 30 days just hanging out with family and playing hrs and hrs of rocket league. Next stage: quarantine. 2 weeks of JUST rocket league.
I love the channel man! I minored in psychology so I really like your approach to teaching/examining the topics you cover on the channel. One topic I’d be interested to hear from your point of view that also doesn’t get much discourse, is on the impact of sleep on esports and the like. Clearly for physical sports getting good sleep is of paramount importance. However in high level gaming I feel like it is common for people to get on tilts and end up staying up super late and then getting up and continuing their game. How does solid sleep/lack of sleep affect the various aspects of competitive gaming. And to make it for your theme a little better you could write in a portion on how sleep affects training and like the difference between two people with equal attributes in every area and who do identical training regimen how is will those sleep habits affect growth in short and long term. Thanks again man keep up the good work!
Hey matt, thanks for the awesome suggestion! I do have plans for a topic on this :) you're totally right, it gets WAYYY underplayed in it's importance in gaming, just due to the nature of the culture surrounding gaming
Could you do a video on the best ways to improve past low Grand champ and into 1800-1900 mmr. So many videos are about how to get into Grand champ but (no exaggeration) I don't think I've ever seen a video talking about improving past it. I think it would be extremely beneficial to all the 1500-1600 mmr bots like myself, thanks.
i have amazing news i was playing on a win streak in 3s and then some diamonds stuck in plat choose me because i was playing really well and i went from p1 D3 to P3 D2
This is actually insane, the only time I got c3 was when I was playing game every day for no longer than 3 hours, little bit of training and couple ranked games. I guess that's also why only when it's school I'm making good progress in game, playing rarely but with quality is literally op c:
Back in my Rock band days (the game), I would spend hours trying to get past a difficult song and it would seem impossible, but if i was forced to take a week off I'd almost always get past the song within a brief time after coming back. This happened many times, it almost seemed like magic at some point. Maybe this is kind of in line with your experience rotating between intense and more limited training sessions. Great video.
Don't worry, it doesn't come naturally to anyone. Our brains didn't evolve to use a controller to control a virtual car, it's 100% a learned skill. Your amount and quality of training will be what gets you there :)
Someone suggested having the same amount of time in both practice and play. What do you think of using the pomodoro method? You'd practice for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break, play for 25 minutes and be done. It's similar to what you're suggesting, but it's almost an hour instead of 30 minutes.
I started seeing a big dip in my preformence and ik that i ment i was going to make a big jump in my rank but no results so far. I think this is exactly what i needed.
Dont pull a muscle stretching for 10 minute videos! jk jk much love great video definitely going to be incorporating this into my training and already sent this to a friend who DESPERATELY NEEDS THIS.
I personally like playing Rocket League. You are telling me to cut my training in half. Idk how to respond to that because I enjoy playing the game and I want to improve
Great guide, a quick follow up question. Let's say I practice 30 minutes a day, playing ranks (3s in my case) is part of this training? Does this mean I'm only "allowed" to have 30 minutes of RL per day? At first, I though you meant for mechanical training (including 1s), I got confused once you considered even replay review as part of the "training".
@@FlowStateGG Wow, that demanding! But i guess that the price if you want to prevent auto-piloting and reinforcement of bad habits (a big challenge for me). I'm great, thank you, glad to see more content from you ♥️
How to train your brain, mentality making you lose. Play till you lose? I do my best games are after a 20 shot pack. First three to five games easy wins. After I deteriorate. So after one loss I switch games. Then come back later or next day
Love the videos, however I would like if the psychology behind this would be explained a bit more! What happens in the brain? What are specific examples? Is there scientific literature about the video topic? I can imagine editing this into the video is hard, but possibly you could add some extra's in the description? Much love and thanks!
Yes! The tough thing i'm struggling with is finding a nice balance between that and making it still very viewer friendly and results oriented. I can definitely go more into depth on that stuff, join my stream tonight and we can chat about it :)
@@FlowStateGG I would like to join stream, however I guess based on your earlier stream times we are in different timezones ^^ However what time for tonight?
the muscle analogy isn't the best. High weight low reps builds burst strength while low weight high reps builds endurance strength. It depends what you want to acheive.
Hey flow so I just watched a few videos and I enjoy your content and energy. Very concise and clear. Thanks. I can't find your discord though sorry. Mind setting me up with the link?
Can you please clarify for me what the steps are? I play 5 hours everyday so I'd cut in half and increase intensity for a week. Then double what I normally do which is 5 so do 10 hours everyday for a couple days or week then go back to 5 hours daily. 10 hours wouldn't be possible for me due to school ;(. Also after returning to normal amounts of training should I cut in half again eventually? Otherwise it'd just be a 1 time thing
You dont have to do the double part. just cut your practice time down for a few days/a week, and then go back to normal. you should notice an overall higher level of play after you go back to normal again. you can cut it in half again when you feel you've plateaued at a rank again
@@FlowStateGG Ah ok thanks. Great video btw. You have a really unique perspective on training. I put in so much hours during quarantine and saw barely any progress. With school I've dialed back to 5 hours daily I think it's alright but it cuts into my sleep a lot so my focus isn't always there. I'll definitely give this a go. I'm looking forward to not being as sleep deprived every night haha
So should i train less and also play less or just train less or what? Also, how much of playing time would you recommend to train? I play like 100 hours in 2 weeks atleast usually. Oh and im reletavily new to the game (started playing when rl went f2p) and i feel like i lack on the really basic mechanics
I meant play/train less. At your stage since you’re still new, you can play a lot :) this is best for when you feel you’ve hit a plateau in your skill. But since you’re new you’re still absorbing a lot of info
Always happy to see Obsidian in the comments :) if you can squeze in some really short practices (even 10-20 mins) on those off days, it would help out a ton
Training helps but Hes right to much and you play sht , i was gold 3 before trained a month everyday hard reached diamond 1 continued Training got some bad habbits that I even lost to golds many times and Played only aggressive
