You’re using your hair color brushes wrong! Let me break down what each one is for💗 

Extra large brushes there are two types. Stiff bristle and that is used for root touch ups with bleach and color. Helps give precision control.
Extra large soft bristle is for shadow root. Allows that blend.
Soft bristle traditional size is good for foils and hand painting. For hand painting it’s not a one size fits all. Below are what size for what texture.
Fine hair: small soft detail
Med:traditional size
Med/thick:power painter
