@medicodyssey

Yeah early war paratroopers had a hard time as, when they jumped out, all the equipment (which was all loaded up on them, including supplies and the rifle) was ripped off from the shock of hitting the air and the chute deploying. They then hit the ground in pretty much their base uniform and had nothing more than a knife if they were lucky. Sometimes they'd land near others or by the equipment or a ways away from enemies, so they had some kind of advantage, but yeah. They then started to reinforce their jump gear and the mentality behind the M2 eventually spread to the rest of the uniform. Early 82nd airborne to late war 82nd airborne is quite different and drastically improved.

I went through Airborne School in 1986 with the Steel Pot with the 1950s or Post WWII design without the leather chin cup. Used all the way through Vietnam till I think 1986. Some of my guys who went through Airborne School had the PASGT with the modifications for a Paratrooper helmet which was nothing more than a crash pad at the back of the helmet bolted on with a Velcro strap that goes just above the chin strap. Paratroopers always had a special helmet liner with straps made for jumping with the general issue M1 steel helmet, all modified and simplified after WWII.
