Is 8K too much? I got a chance to review the Nikon Z9 - an 8.3K 45.7MP mirrorless full frame camera - and it's incredible. It might be the best video camera I use for a long time. But I think we might have reached the threshold of "too much quality"? Maybe we don't need to go any higher? Regardless, I had a blast with this thing.

That video quality is absolutely insane! I'm just now delving into 4K recording, and it's already amazing to me how much more control I have compared to 1080 - I can't even imagine how crazy 8K must feel to use. Don't think I could ever truly justify using it myself, but knowing that level of quality is possible is pretty amazing.

IMO 8k is great for cropping and having good detail for tracking/compositing, but for around 99% of RU-vidrs out there I would say 1080p is more than enough. Vid looks good, man!

2009 called. Huh? This has to be a troll comment because 1080p isn't enough for anyone. It's an obsolete 15 year old resolution, and that's being kind of generous because 1080p was already affordable and mainstream in 2007.

I’ve had the Z9 for almsot a year now and it’s just awesome and keeps getting better I did a video on my love/hate on it on my channel more from a pro photographer standpoint which might explain some of the qwams some people have that might have other use cases. Also cf express B cards are being adopted by almsot all major camera brands now and card manufacturers so it’ll jsut keep getting cheaper/faster/bigger And AF issues you had you might want to check the quick/delay sensitivity setting

A few thoughts: - I think the ProMist is a bit much, kinda made the whole image feel like Vaseline on the lens, like someone else mentioned. Up to taste, though. - I'm sure you know this, but the Blackmagic 6K G2 and 6K Pro use NPF batteries instead of the little Canon ones. Are those cameras out of the question because of autofocus? - This might be because I've been diving deep back into ACES lately, but, do picture profiles actually do anything when you're shooting in raw? The CDNG raw I shoot on my BMCC2.5K gets debayered right into ACES, which is pretty much how any raw image is treated, so the bit you mentioned about shooting with a flatter profile was a bit confusing to me.

Been using 8K on the R5 since launch for my channel and am now moving to the R5C. They both produce spectacular video and the R5 has slightly better autofocus, but the exposure tools on the R5C and no-record-limit are just too good to pass up. The R5 is going onto my slider as my b-roll cam, since I'll be taking lots of shorter shots I probably won't have to worry as much about overheating there. The Nikon looks great and I dig the features but as you pointed out the autofocus still needs a bit of refinement, plus for me I'm already heavily invested in Canon glass. Gotta give the Nikon credit though. Even with the Promist there's still so much detail in the image! Thanks for the review.

The Z9 is the dark horse of the current flagships, for sure. I keep dropping information about it to my friend who use to main a 1DXii, but he wouldn't be swayed lol. He went with an R5C (lighter). But i still like to see the Nikon underdog kill it. The Sony FX30 seems like an interesting camera too! Different class, sure, but yeah haha.

Seeing the RJ-45 port, I was hoping for video over network protocols like NDI to be built into this camera. It's a shame to have an ethernet port and not be able to output live video over it for streaming. At least having ethernet is still better than relying on WiFi though, and at least we have full-size HDMI.

The good thing about the Z9 its that you can "reframe" a lot with that 8k image. So, it's easy to work in a lot of environment but not really needed in a lot of cases, as a video camera its good but if you also want it as a "photo" camera, i would prefer the 8k30 oversampled from 8.6k with the A1 :d. Gerald Undone has great reviews of all this beast of cameras. Nikon Z9 uses a Sony sensor BTW :d

For the storage option, you have CFExpress to NVME converters from Zitay. Maybe there are more out now. You just pluck in regular NVME and record forever. You should use low-power NVME like Kioxia BG4 or BG5 drives because the camera can't supply enough juice for 980 Pro NVME.

that's completely wrong though, what matters is pixel density and distance from the screen. if you have a 32'' 4k monitor and a 32'' 1080p monitor, you would be able to clearly see a difference since the pixel density on the 1080p monitor would be significantly lower.
