I’m Australian and started a new job recently. The guy in charge there asked me what kind of music I listen to. I had been listening to ‘Sound as ever’ recently and said that I had been listening to You am I. He replied with ‘I’ve never heard of them’ so I played him Berlin chair. He listened to the song and said ‘Yeah, they’re shit’. I don’t work there anymore.
@@TaxFraudTutorials Fucking hell if I operated on those principles I'd never be employed ever and would have disowned most of my family and friends and divorced my wife. 😂
@@agathisrobusta I think I was drunk when I replied to this comment definitely do not recommend quitting a job over music tastes! Although I suspect it may be a joke/exaggeration
1993 sitting in the lounge room of a share house in Windsor, Brisbane, smoking and drinking with 10 other friends and a couple of backpackers blasting this. Never forget it
1993 in a share house on Ashgrove Ave in Asgrove Brissy that I shared with 6 women cranking this dancing in the lounge room doing exactly the same thing! Thanks for helping me recall that memory Matthew.
@@callyman I was in Ashgrove/Paddington at that time in a basically open share house with bands downstairs and DJs upstairs playing round the clock. We probs met each other.
I was reading a book that had the line: “…and watched him like a late night re-run” and I immediately thought of this song and came here to watch and was going to comment exactly this.
The famous video clip stars PJ, an old boxer and his amazing dancing moves. "We just got him along, paid him some cash, put him in a silver suit and said 'dance away my son' and he did it spectacularly" says Rusty. PJ would later re-appear in the Cathy's Clown video
All the guys here writing sentimental things about listening to this when they were young and how things suck now 25+ years later should team up and make a fan video of them all dressed in silver jumpsuits and dancing their sad thoughts away and ignoring what they're going through.
I've heard the pedestrians in that city can be quite troublesome, hope you "looked past them" and continued with your business. Glad you made it out of there.
@@yesokthen Didn't Daniel Johns admit at one point that the name was a combination of Sliver by Nirvana (misspelled to Silver) and Berlin Chair by You Am I? Anyway - awesome song.
Why did he want to give all his eggs to us? One of the best songs ever released. And one of the coolest videos too! Still listening in 2019. Maryland, USA. What a tune!! This will never get old!
I thought eggs too!! Like the saying "put all my eggs in one basket" but it's aches??? 25 years on and I've only just found out I've been signing eggs the whole time 😅
@@Sharetaahjhhshjnajn "Aches" makes sense if you've heard older Australian slang. Belly aching is telling someone your woes / having a whinge. So "If you wait, I'll give all my aches to you", "Take a chance, to ignore what you're going through" - makes sense. Basically - I'll tell you my tale of woe, and you can ignore yours for a while.
You Am I were always the tightest band on any bill they were on. Being that rehearsed let them lash out when they wanted, and still be in sync. Last time I saw them was when they were touring the Hi Fi Way/Hourly Daily anniversary shows. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. I think Tim is perhaps the best song writer Australia has ever produced.
@@Neilios1000 agreed, Tim is an under rated gem. I saw them play support in a pub bar in Chicago one time. After Tim lit the bar on fire the main band came out and chastised the crowd for not appreciating what they had just witnessed. Was a fun gig. A shame they were never able to crack the US.
A 15 year old me discovered this song 1994 as a music track that was included on an American CD-ROM computer game called Quarantine. It was probably my first music CD and the best track of the game. I totally sucked at the game but loved this song. It wasn't until many years later until I discovered the bands name and "unique" music video. Great job guys!
This was the song that kicked off Aussie rock in the 90s. Absolute classic, and as most of us know, half of the inspiration for silverchair's name (with Nirvana's 'Sliver')! Tim Rogers is a bloody legend, I've met him very briefly. Aussie icon, national treasure.
To the 109 LOSERS who gave this the thumb down you have no taste at all! This songs like all You Am I tracks ROCKS!! I am in Melbourne and so hope we can have live gigs again. I have never actually seen them live but love their music.
The old geezer dancing in this video, was a regular at Rockabilly bands at The Phoenician Club on Broadway in the late 80's and early '90's. It's a hoot to see him again all these years later.
The Phoenician. I remember after a young girl OD'd on e it ended up turning into a pokies venue. We started losing a LOT of great venues in Sydney after 1999. The Olympics really homogenised the place - took a good 10 years for some vibe to get back in the city than lock-out laws hit and so many clubs and restaurants closed down. Than COVID hit. Ay yi yi...
MMANOVICEMW me too, ‘cept it was in Pitt St, Sydney. Uncle Timmy was rocking denim on denim but man he was still cooler than anyone could ever be. #GBTFLoY
I'm listening to this shit as an 18year old teenager and it creates a te rrible desire for me to be a Australian, I think this is the best thing I can hear in my life, its loud but far away from chaos the lyrics is pure but far from being boring its gotta be one of the finest thing ı can ever have experience in my life. Thanks to the tv show upright to introduce me with you am ı and regards from Turkey
Hey, look into Power Pop as a Genre in general you may really really love what you find. Look up the album "Frosting on the Beater" by The Posies. You wont regret it friend. After that if your interest has been peaked look up "International Pop Overthrow" by Material Issue. Power pop ended up evolving into a strange bridge between Punk Rock and The Beatles by the mid 80s onward. Its a great genre and a perfect balance between aggression, desperation, honesty, and existentialism. Good stuff.
Just discovering this in September of 2022, in Massachusetts, USA. Damn shame I didn’t get to hear this when it was new, and I was in my teens-would’ve made a great memory.
Hey, 17 year old Norwegian girl here. Just found this song this year, and it blew my mind and heart to pieces. Absolutely timeless, and a real good song still! Please, please, please send recommendations in the comments of similar songs if you know any! 🙏🏼:)
I remember listening to a recorded live show of YAI playing on JJJ - they were at a festival in the States in the late 90s. They were nowhere close to being the headline act. They are absolutely killing it. Crowd were quiet then louder and louder as the band started really getting into it. In between songs, some guy yells out "WHOOO ARRRRRE YOOOOU?". Tim replies immediately: "Who are we? Who are you? WHO ARE ANY OF US, WHO THE F&CK KNOWS???? Alright, We're Crosby, Stills & Nash - THANKS FOR PAYING ALL THAT MONEY FOR ALL THAT FREE LOVE PEOPLLLLLE"." Crowd goes nuts. Just an amazing band, so lucky to have had them performing for most of my life.
I'll ignore each golden, dragging kiss you can give. On the blankest face that you ever had to forgive. If you see my failings, see my failings through. I'm the re-run that you'll always force yourself to sit through.
How depressing is it reading some of these comments about some game and the people dancing, instead of maybe Tim Rogers, Rusty, Andy and the baby Davy Lane. They were guests on PlaySchool. Tim is a shit hot front man. This song definately reminds me of simpler, more innocent times. Love it!
long time fan thanks to thanks to the guys i got to hang out with them back in 94.... been friends ever since....much respect for these Aussie rock royalty! well earned exceptionally deserved!
This song takes me back to Sydney, the early 90's, these guys had just released Sound as Ever. Became the part of the soundtrack for my 2nd year at art school. Such a great time to be alive!!!
I fell asleep as a teenager in the 90s so many times trying to stay up and watch rage. I usually woke up when this song was on- for some reason it always did the trick, lol
I saw the singer walking down chapel street one day, was cool af I tracked down albums by almost every artist on the Quarantine soundtrack Upright braught me here. The fact that it's brilliant made me come back 100 times and counting.
Bigbacon quarantine has a great soundtrack, berlin chair was one of the first songs i got into. i watched Heavy Metal recently and the cab scene looks like it was stolen/inspired to make quarantine.
Remember hearing this in college on a Spin Magazine Mixtape called "Get Some!" in '93. That tape pretty much dictated my musical tastes for the next 10 years.
