I see everybody's comments saying he over did it, but me as a drummer i feel what he's doing. while recording a track you keep the pocket fat and limit your rips but when your live you go ham, it's just a matter of fully using the gift that God blessed you with......... with that being said JDrew is a beast on the set

Also with this, people forget that there is a track going and most individuals that dont have an ear for specific instruments barely notice what he is doing!
Any professional drummers on here know that the way we are hearing it right now is not how it sounded throughout the whole building there's stems from the track which allow him to pretty much do what he wants all he is doing is making it sound full to the crowd
Chill with all the negative comments... It's a show people not a studio recording. We are stage view not audience. He played correctly when it was time to worship and when it was time rejoice. It's our job as drummers to keep it colorful for them and help usher in the spirit of praise.

It's like a great basketball player, because of his extreme gifted nature he is able to try and pull off the craziest stuff, things that normal people can't dream of, the impressive part is the fact they can even attempt it, while haters stuck in they home church still playing Beatles drum rolls into the one, please stop!!!
He was rusty and fresh on the gig he went secular around that time but she needed him and as her brother and just cause he produced it he really had no choice. Looked like an important gig so he made a brother decision for his sister. Still smacked fresh off the couch singing
yes he plays to a protools track.. so he can pretty much do what he wants. Anyone that knows J. Drew knows his pocket is fat number 1 and number two, he chops. Thats his style. He produced not only the song but this whole album. Thats his sister he's playing for. If it was a problem I'm sure it would come up. But it never has. The other thing is agAIN, you can't hear the protools track from where the recorder is so it probably doesn't sound like "just a bunch of chops in the house" because if the FOH engineer is mixing it correctly, it blends
I like it. It shows that he's not playing timid he's playing carefree which i want musicians to play with. even with the mistake that he made in this video it was excellent he has nice runs and nice accents he can play.
Placement was everywhere but that's just how complex he is an artist.. Kierra too because all the stuff she was doing+ all the stuff the keys were doing . It's solid
I understand people knowing something about music and I know people know when someone makes a mistake! But who gives people the right to make negative comments about a persons playing! I believe these videos should have a comment block so folks can stop talking about people's like this and even creating arguments over it! It's just all wrong! that is not the way to build up!
+michael daley what's crazier is all the negative comments are coming from people who would probably kill to play in his place and know they're not ready.
I think he was having fun with the song. sometimes they play the song 4 or 5 times in practice, then for the main show. I think he was having fun, with it making it more interesting after playing it so much. Aaron Spears said he does the same thing with Usher songs. He said every show it's different fills, pockets, rolls and everything...
bigtigga2007 True, but when you're high profile like that you should practice more. You can tell he's hella rusty! JDrew is one of my favorite producers, and dude is a dope drummer, but sometimes you get so busy producing until you forget how to play a live show. I agree, he was trying to do too much and without a lot of practice that's not good. Calvin Rogers would have showed him how to play his own track. Although I'm critiquing him, he did some very nice stuff. My thing is if you haven't practiced it at home while you're shedding don't try it live. In case you're wondering how I know he hasn't been practicing, I'm a musician and I know how a musician of that caliber sounds when they practice. He seemed to be a step slow at every turn. He was fighting to stay loose and to play free. He was concentrating and overthinking at the same time. To his defense we're all human and we make mistakes! He has many shows where he killed it and so he has some passes on reserve.
Samuel Grant love the way he kept going and was not defeated by a "mistake", he actually brought more energy afterwards further letting us know how to fix it. Fresh indeed 😉
The way y'all commenting is proof that you haven't heard the recording... he played the same chops that he did on the record... if it's on the cd this way... that how the people would want to hear it live... stop being simple minded and do your homework before you comment.
Most people commenting don't know what they are talking about, first of all his recoveries are the most impressive part, he's got stems to hold down the meter, and if you heard the full mix, you probably would not have noticed that much, trust me everybody in that building left thinking he snapped, so let's stop the Monday morning quarterbacking, because the stuff he did was bananas, this is coming from touring pro, please stop hating!!!!
Obviously he has really nice chops but he really is over doing this song. The feel wasn't even near the same as the recording. But in general j.drew is sick

You can't feel all that different syncopation you don't even know where the beat is in the song he got some good loose phrasing and licks but he's doing too much
Doverbeach32 You would have to understand the differences in musical styles. . Saying he is over playing this song is like saying "When Josey jordison plays a drum fill in a song, he is playing to many notes". . . . . You have to play what the artist and song requires. . . In gospel, the drummers come with a funk playing style but are required to play a lot more in their songs. . .Which is why a lot of gospel songs (even more so live) have a lot of break sections in them. . . Keep making music!
I understand what you saying... But its his track (he produced it) so he just having fun... plus its his sister singing, she not gonna trip out. Trust me...He know how to stay in the pocket. He nice on that set!!!
he produced it! he created ALL the breaks and changes himself. He's a musician thats playing it live but just so happenes to be the producer of this track
That’s his track there playing too plus he’s the producer n he the one playing on the record.. he can play it how he wants if he wants to add different hits to it he’s got a right to do it .. how yu choose to play it is up to you .. it’s the way you play
Rashar Banks ok that’s nice that he produced the track but that does not show the fact that he might be throwing off the artist while he is playing and I’m not saying he is not good because he is a beast but there are somethings you should not do during a show
