This is the teaching, as being teached by John Piper, that accelerated my development of OCD which ruined my life, caused me to wreck my family and ultimately broke me completely to the point my parents were going to send me to a mental hospital because I refused to eat. Only when I deconverted I could start to heal, but I’m probably stuck with some of the damage forever. The teaching came exactly in the time when I had minor doubts about scripture. I realized I couldn’t do anything without faith and it not being sin, didn’t want to sin, but had doubts, so I didn’t do anything including eating because that’d be sin. When my parents forced me to do things like brush my teeth, I prayed for forgiveness every second, resulting in this 2 minute activity sometimes taking an hour while crying because I was willingly sinning. Yeah. Great teaching.

Strangely enough, that saying (in eastern philosophies like Taoism and Buddhism) is actually true if you aren't attaching a label of "good" or "bad" or "sin" to the anxiety or the pride. If you read "pride" as "ego" (your ego is sculpted by not only you, but also your environment, the people around you, local religions etc.) and "anxiety" as "concerns/stress about the self"... Lets say you have general anxiety about a medical diagnoses of Anxiety... is it actually YOU inside who is anxious about it? Is it an external force acting within you to impose a judgement on yourself, *based on someone else's standards*? Who decides what parts of you are bad and good and why? Who are you punishing yourself for? (Note: Ego isn't used here in the Id/Ego/SuperEgo way but if you aren't into eastern stuff, then the ego in my example would actually be the superego part of Freuds trio)

But seriously, I had a job at a call center a few years ago that was so stressful Id regularly retch bile into the grass every morning on my walk to my car. Anxiety was nothing new to me, but when it started to manifest in such a visceral way, I talked to my doctor about it. She explained that anxiety is like a malfunctioning fight or flight response, and thats why you feel nauseous, why your heart races, or you start to sweat. Your brain is telling you you need to react to survive, even if theres not an overwhelming threat to reason with. To manage my physical well-being, I ended up quitting the highest paying job Ive ever had. When religious institutions sweep that shit away and dump all the burden of mental health into faith value directly onto the shoulders of the believers, they only ostracize, instead of building people up. I know that churches are beacons of community for some, but Ive only been painted as an outsider anyways, but I couldnt imagine having dedicated my life to the church only to hear my pastor saying my anxiety makes me wrong or not a believer. 🤷‍♀️ Why they keep pusing the finish line? I’m a Christian here and I’m here to say, I disagree with the statement of “not a true Christian if you are suicidal”. Everyone goes through hardships, some periods more extreme than others. Even if you are suicidal, the message that the Lord is merciful should not be flung out the door. He of course doesn’t want you to take your own life, but he is a patient, understanding, and forgiving God. He loves you personally and wants the best for you. You still can be a Christian whilst being suicidal. Some may call being suicidal a sin in which by definition is, but the Lord forgives you. Those who’ve disregarded your mental health as something you can just change did not represent the Lord. It is a process of having talks with people you trust, the Lord, and psychologists. I pray for you and may the Lord bless you 🙏 ✝️

Yeah, the tough realisation that a parent who is very religious doesn’t really love you, but loves and cares more about an entity they never met and that never really helped them through their life is something that I’m going through. I’ve never fully come out to him, ‘cause I’m a proud agnostic, but a closeted pan, and that alone led him to make my life a living hell at the moment, so I feel trapped and sometimes even really hopeless. Again, even he thinks I’m infested with demons when in reality he’s the one who’s making me so miserable. And after all that talk whilst demonising me, he actually has the guts to tell me “that he loves me” when he outright said to me that he would leave me and my mum if he were “without God”. Idk how he builds so much confidence into telling us that he doesn’t really care about us, when I’m here, wishing I were dead because I’ve been treated as a burden for almost all my life but still here, healthy and alive, because I’m very attached to the life I had before telling my father I was agnostic and still very much care about him. It’s really a cruel world and I’m very happy for you, that you were able to free yourself from oppression. I really wish you all the best forever ‘cause you deserve it.

There are also zero instances of anyone praying for the regrowth of missing limbs and it working. This is why prayer is never more successful than the placebo effect. I've been struggling with post-religious trauma the last few years, along with complex PTSD. The religious trauma is so much worse, because there's no triggers you can learn to avoid. And when triggered with other things, when you reflexively turn to religion for comfort, it's like a kick in the balls after a blow to the gut.

Maybe try to stay away from religious imagery. I’m a Christian, but due to my own trauma I stated away from it for a while. Continue trying to heal with professionals and people with similar experiences. Don’t feel ashamed and believe in yourself. Many years later I’ve come back to the Bible and studied it from a scholarly point of view. And, well...let’s just say these overly religious idiots don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. A sense of guilt that occurred whenever I'd write stories containing witches, demons, and angels as characters. I'm far too concerned how my parents and other Christians will react to my work. Hell I'm currently trying to devise secular projects for kids, to publish under my real name but am having trouble because I need to keep the parents happy. i.e. no magical powers, probably can't write fantasy or Sci-fi, can't have action oriented conflicts... Kinda makes me think I should stick to using my pen-name because I'd have all the freedom I want then. I explained that the reason I don't tell her anything going on in my life is because every time I do it's a lecture on how I'm being a bad Christian and how I just need to have faith and my depression will go away. At least you didn't end up close to 50 years old realizing the real problem is probably not you at all, but others you encounter and how they behave. I like to tell folks we can't control other folks' behaviors. We can only control our own. If it makes you feel any better I only have two deterrents in life that prevent me from punching the living daylights out of folks and pounding their heads into the cement most days. My first deterrent is that I don't feel like going to prison. My second deterrent is that I don't feel like going to hell. The first deterrent works really well for me, really really well I must say because I have not pounded anyone's face in the pavement even though most that acted evil deserved it. lol.... So yup. Prison time works well as my deterrent. I'm almost 50 years old. I find it better to walk away from people not for me, but for their sake. So you are still very young. Like I said, I have noticed the biggest problem seems to usually be other folks at least from what I have observed. You take a regular person and place them in an environment where they never encounter idiots then you more than likely will be very content and happy in life. But it is quite the opposite when the situation is flipped and inverted. I don't know even one person who can say they have never been abused, ridiculed, bullied or something along those lines. Just don't let folks get to you. People come and go. The only person that should matter most in your life honestly is you because only you can live your life and no one else can. That's my two cents for the day.

That hardly sounds like saying Think For Yourself to Me. It sounds like Your imposing Your supposed "lack of belief in a god" on me. Speaking of which, I am not allowed to Question that either. As an Atheist, I have to see You as one who never makes claims and has no Burden of Proof. You have No Religion. You Think for Yourself. But I don't. Atheists do make the Claim that God does not Exist. Ad You have made Your Atheistic Beliefs a Religion. And because Your Religion and its Pastors gave You a Script, You now see m=Me in the Role of a "Typical Believer" arguing that Atheism is a Religion, and will Respond with "Atheism is not a Religion. It is a lack of belief in a god. Atheism is a Religion like not collecting Stamps is a Hobby. The Dictionary Defines Religion as belief in and reverence of gods and supernatural Powers." Calling Your Atheistic Beliefs a Religion is not the same as calling Atheism itself a Religion, though, and the Dictionary You got the Definition from has 5 other Definitions You ignore. You also ignore the Point. The mere Fact that I can Make the Argument for You proves its a Scripted Reply. For that matter, even saying this is a Script. I contemplated suicide for years growing up. I had even written suicide letters to leave behind, but ended up throwing them away. I tried ODing on pain killers and sleeping pills after college, but didn't work. I have a physical disability, so I was always an easy target for bullies. I got wedgies, insulted, and shoved into lockers on a regular basis in elementary and middle school. My dad was a preacher, so we were heavily involved in church. There were things going on at home too that didn't make it a positive place to be. I remember hearing sermons where the pastor's preached about mental illness being a sin, and everyone that committed suicide is going straight to hell. It was a painfully miserable existence for years; too miserable to want to live, but too scared of going to hell to die.

@@xpedro2960 So sorry for late reply. That's a great question. I think there were two main things that saved me; first was leaving home for college. I got to interact with people of all kinds of different backgrounds from other parts of the US and the world. Secondly, after a homeless spell after college, and having to move back home, my uncle helped me get a job as a cashier working at a dollar store. That forced me to interact with people, and come out of my shell. Between those two experiences, I learned that despite my initial impression and what society tells us, there are far more good people than bad in our world. My favorites were always the people that were very positive and encouraging. The joy, gratitude, and positivity they radiated was something I wanted to emulate, and rarely saw in church. That started a years-long, neverending journey deep into self help books/videos/articles, reassessing my values, rearranging who I spend time around and what kind of media I consume, and retraining my thought process. Sorry there wasn't just a singular thing to point to that pulled me out of that dark place, but a combination of things in addition to intentional changes and the desire for better. Im grateful I've made it to a point where I'm in a much better mental state, and my heart aches for those that successfully gave up too soon.

When a doctor put me on them my senior year, I didn't think anything of telling people about it. You can imagine how well that went down. It's kind of comical in retrospect how ridiculous people were about them. The dean of men told me I was a "social junkie" who wasn't doing anything different from someone who uses recreational drugs to feel good, and before I knew it there was a rumor that I had bipolar disorder. The reaction is funny to me now because I left the church almost 15 years ago and I'm happily detached from that environment. But if you are not used to a world where your entire social and economical life is centered around the social group you're part of, it's easy not to understand how devastating that kind of arbitrary rejection can be. I'm glad I got out OK, but I hate that so many people want to leave but can't or don't have the outside perspective to realize it's NOT all right to be treated the way some people in the church treat people who have been traumatized, have a mind that works differently from theirs, or otherwise veer outside their narrow standards.

One guy on staff even heard about what the "social junkie" lecture and approached me to make sure I was OK and make sure I understood I didn't do anything wrong. It is very conventional in some church-y environments for people to tell you bluntly if they feel you're doing something wrong -- it's seen as helpful. For example, it's not weird for one woman to tell another woman her skirt is too tight or her shirt it too low-cut, because it's safe to assume your fellow students want to be modest. But yeah, it can be very upsetting when someone in a position of authority tells you that you're sinning by listening to your doctor, and it's confusing to have two authority figures tell you opposite things about whether something's a sin. But figuring out you can't win with Jesus-people really helped me leave the church later, so there's that!

FWIW, I think it's totally healthy to have a strong response to stories of people normalizing their refusal to respect boundaries. It's a difficult process to figure out that well-intentioned invasiveness is nonetheless wrong. I still go on the defensive instinctively if someone seems to be assuming an undue ownership of my life or decisions. But I do think the nice thing about having gone through all that is that it makes it MUCH easier to hold firm to personal boundaries now. I discovered "I'll Be Honest" on RU-vid when I was 16 back in 2009. I was extremely terrified of Hell and was traumatized after being mentally abused and bullied by my main teacher in childhood. I tried to search for comfort by listening to sermons on RU-vid and I found the video sampled here. I started listening to Paul Washer, John Piper and others like them. Nothing - I mean *nothing* brought me further to ruin than discovering American preaching like that. I'm from Scandinavia where the preaching is more tolerant of how life actually works. I came to believe that the Scandinavian way of preaching was hypocritical and that these pastors where telling the truth. Not only was I broken because of trauma, I was an unrepentant sinner headed for Hell for not being able to overcome that trauma by myself. At 16. It took me 7 more years to really dare questioning things. From the moment I said to myself: "If God truly is real, then I should be able to look at everything Christianity claims without discovering major flaws". After that it took 4 more years until I was completely convinced that Christianity cannot be the truth. After this realization, I actually was able to start working with a therapist and figure out the real issues, the guilt complexes are gone and my life is infinitely better now even though I still have a way to go. Religious trauma is real, and if you are religious and miserable, and addicted to all kinds of stuff to regulate your emotions like porn, alcohol, drugs, shopping etc, then you *have to* believe me when I say that the answers to solving your issues lies in the complete opposite end of the way your religious leader is pointing.

And if we are told that if we even question or doubt christianity that we are going to hell, do we really have a choice? I've learned, they very carefully crafted the bible to TERRIFY us so much that we could never leave. I've been deconstructing and its terrifying because of all the threats in the bible. They made sure to have a threat for every situation and question you may have while deconstructing, including using your own brain/logic. Because thinking for yourself is considered playing God or trying to outsmart God. Boy they were smart to add that one, because you really can't get anywhere if you believe that your own thoughts and logic are sin and from the devil. One would think, if it's actually free will, the bible would say its totally ok to explore every religion and every other option so that we can be sure we've found the truth. Instead it uses threats and fear.

@@myrawest Exactly. I don't necessarily believe the Bible was designed with social control in mind, because the texts predates the Bible as a book of course, and Christianity was incredibly fragmented before 300 AD anyways.. However, the effect it has is insane. As you say, so many blockades and traps to trigger anxiety just by thinking about the *concept* of doubting your faith. Fortunately as you mention, the whole premise of how you are supposed to be "saved" is flawed form the outset. Even if you believe we have some form of compatibilistic free will, the premise for salvation in the Bible is not part of that. You don't choose what you become convinced of, and anyone with a working brain can test that immediately. Just choose to believe in Santa and see how that works. This is why Calvinism is such a dangerous doctrine. They acknowledge that everything must be predetermined by God - we have no say in who is punished and who is saved - and they are OK with it. Free will doesn't even need to be a factor in their view. I hope that Calvanism and all kinds of religious doctrines preaching predestination will be purged from the face of the earth. Because that is truly fanatic and dangerous; "Yes, we believe God spawned you on this plane of reality, and he has chosen you to fall into sin and punish you by eternal torture. No, you had no choice in this fate. And yes, God is good and you are evil, and still deserve this."

Well, I started having doubts in my teen years about Christianity. And, the church I went to wasn't helping anything. I spent a lot of time in that church as I grew up in my teens, and it only served to make me hate churches. I had people gossip about my family and me, people judge us for our expressions (we were more accepting of things like dyed hair and skater clothes in a conservative way), and expecting us to act like we were perfect Christians. And, when my parents left the church, even when I was still going, the church took down all the things I had made for the church and even left my husband and me out of the birthday announcements in the bulletin. It wasn't that they forgot. It was that they didn't care. To this day, I still cannot go to a church without having severe anxiety and a panic attack. I worry about the same things, like memories of saying or doing stupid things will keep me awake at night. But thinking about it now, I can’t recall the last time anyone else ever said or did anything to the point I’d actually remember it. And that makes me wonder...do people really not remember our blunders as well as we remember our own, or am I more forgiving with others than with myself? I hope it’s the former, it would be cool if it turned out that other people don’t think about (or even notice!) mistakes as much as we notice our own. Sorry, just wanted to throw that out there since you seem to be an agonizer just like I am, and the thought of not recalling other people’s blunders made me want to reassure you that maybe it’s not as bad as we think it is sometimes. Take care :)

I was lucky to be raised in a church that was accepting of psychology (to a degree, until you get to LGBT+ issues) but I came across one priest who was not just creationist but also very much hostile towards the field, at least they use exorcism as a last resort. As you can see you can justify many bad things happening though a "Fall" that never happened so in this way I think creationism is harmful as well. Then there's the legendary Catholic guilt that I've seen affect many. If possible, can you do an episode about the panic around pornography?

Agreed. There is only one very related issue: the nocebo effect. Meaning if you think something bad will happen if X is happening, then you will experience that bad thing regardless of an actual cause. Give someone a useless pill that your patient believes will make him ill and he might actually start suffering from whatever he feared the pill does. The believe in demonic possesion itself can actually make people fall ill, after all they "know" what types of sinful activities might cause those pesky demons to come around. And if they do "sin" they can make up their own demons that make them go bonkers... the nocebo effect is "fun".

The amount of times I heard “be anxious for nothing” and was told that it was a choice to feel that way. I was told this by friends and professors! I almost jumped off our balcony because of my mental health but because I just barely didn’t do it, the campus “therapist” said that I wasn’t bad enough to see her regularly. I was told that anxiety and depression was caused by demons by a pastor who happened to go to school with us. That was one of the reasons that I left. Can you say religious trauma!?

As a child, I was constantly reminded of eternal damnation and hellfire if I didn't repent and if I died "impure" or with sin. I was taught that we were sinners and bad people just for pretty much existing and that the only way to absolve us is to repent and follow God's will. It was wrong of me to begin developing sexual thoughts and urges during puberty and my teenage years. I don't believe in eternal punishment after death anymore, but the fear still roots deep because that's how my brain was developing as a child. I became depressed, a people-pleaser, and had serious self-esteem issues. I resent the religious people who made me "scared for my soul" so-to-speak.
