I think the problems with this and the Ghostbusters example are more about tearing down something people like (and being a core part of the starting audience for the new show) instead of adding to setting. It would make more sense to set their stories in those settings without replacing existing characters as that would give them much more leeway for developing the characters and deviating from the original.

I think another problem, if im just taking all this on face value, is that these things are product of "ghettoization" by social media algorithms and how they explode fringe views into a way it looks as if its mainstream (when it clearly isnt). And then, again taking it on face value, shit like this gets released with the idea this is what people want. When in reality, its just a very loud fringe minorty calling for it. And in addition you also have the self segregation in real life, i.e. what people in L.A. belief is vastly different from the rest in california. Ive said this in other videos of asmongold regarding this topic: The idea that people dont like women leads or black people leads, or whatever... is bulshit. What people dont like, is watching a movie or series, regardless if its an existing franchise or a new one... Where the entire script, setting, etc... serves as merely a vessel for an ideological message. Ghostbusters was precisely like this. The movie existed to serve the characters, rather then the characters serving the movie.

@@Tritriumchannelexactly. I think it's a distinct result of LA culture bleed and reading too hard into social media. The majority of people don't care about inclusion (meaning poor inclusion to pander) and outright dislike it, it's why 2023 was the worst year for Hollywood ever or in a long time, can't remember. They use the small loud minority to try and do damage control anytime there's backlash against it which results in critics being dismissed as racist misogynist etc or haters and will usually spin things no matter how big or small to make it look like those critics are bad people. It happens way too frequently. Ahmed Best and the Asian actress from the sequel trilogy of Star Wars are big examples of the narrative twisting, both commented on Hollywood being shit and how bad it's effected them on social media and news articles about both twisted it to be about fan harassment when neither had ever mentioned it and both made it clear it was about the industry and the people within it with the actress outright saying she felt that they used her to pander. It's sad, but hopefully the big money loss going on cleans up this mess

Something to keep in mind with the #1 animated show on HBO Max, it is January. Pretty sure January is where you put shows and movies that you expect to die. People don't go to see movies in January. You see this in other areas, too. I was talking to the employees at a restaurant this week and they told me that their hours are cut back this month because it's the slowest month of the year. I doubt this was released at this time because they had actual confidence in it.

The arguments I have heard for why it exists were as a tax write off and as a means to retain the Scooby Doo license for low cost. However both of those goals couldve been accomplished by giving the show to someone with an actual idea on how to make a good spin off with some amount of value. As it stands Velma doesn't even have a story, just events strung together by stuff happening on screen while every character is a direct mouthpiece for the showrunner to rant infront of or at the viewer.

Race swapping is usually generally finicky as there can be reasons for and against it. Like how dare people want visual consistency with the character as well. Consistency is a key factor in keeping people into them. You can't turn characters like Sonic into a green giraffe and keep the same name and expect people to be on board with it. You wouldn't race change real people so fans will get annoyed if you drastically change them even visually. If they're a different race but still look like the character then usually it can be ignored and forgiven. If race swapping is done, the best you can hope for is forgiveness. Like with Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, if a character isn't as well known or they do a good job of it, it can be forgiven (although that's usually not the case now). And considering that it's animation, race swapping doesn't really need to happen as much since black voice actors can play white characters and reverse is true (although some people won't be happy with that). Another problem with this whole "representation" thing is it's clear that it's just for virtue signaling and just happens because they need it. Look at comics with randomly making characters gay for no reason like Tim Drake. If you have them go from dating women for most of their lives then randomly have them ditch their partner to go dating guys, of course people will go "what the hell?". If representation matters as much as they say it does then make new characters. Harley Quinn was a new character for the animated series that she ended up being a mainstay. But they can't make good characters or stories. That's why they tag them into existing brands.

The critic rating on RT is almost always higher than the audience score and it usually never dips below a certain threshold because the critics are the ones defending the garbage. Sometimes it’s because they get invited to the premiere events for some of these things and get given free stuff, or they get offered the first opportunity by the creators to write an article or review before anybody else, so to protect that access, they don’t really say anything negative.
@fishworshipper
@fishworshipper Год назад
I imagine it's just because a critic's job is different from an audience's desires. An audience just considers "did I like it," and if they liked it then they'll give it five stars, and if they didn't then they give it none, with a few scattered people voting in between. A critic actively considers matters like animation speed/quality, music choice, specific joke timings, etc, and consequently puts a lesser value on the broad-strokes things that impact the audience score the most, ie the writing/changed characterization. In other words, the critics are not being paid to guess how much folk will like it, they're being paid to quantify how "Objectively Good" they think it is.

I will mention that there's a marvel comic universe-the ultimate universe I believe-where Nick fury is based on Samuel Jackson, and the reason he's Nick fury in the MCU is because he got a lot of leverage over them when he discovered they used his likeness in the comics without permission. But there are a few examples where the actor steals the show enough to offset the racial swapping of characters. But most of the time, that doesn't happen and the change is ultimately useless, and therefore a bad change. Major changes should either be made to fit a different medium better or something similar-like fixing plot holes made as the series progressed or things like that, minor changes aren't cared about as much if they don't go against established things in the original. Of course if the writing or adaption is good enough for people to like them despite creating new plot holes that's another story, but in most cases the best way to get fans to like an adaptation is to try to stick to the original or the spirit of the original as much as possible. Pedro still looks a lot like Joel though, so its not really seen as as bad. Superman has had non white actors as well, but they've always looked like Superman. That's a huge factor, if you're going to play a character in live action you should make the effort to look like the character. Voice acting is completely different, you just hire whomever has the best voice for the character, because the character should still look like the character no matter who is voicing them. Very rarely does a race swapped character's actor have enough natural talent to embody the character to the point nobody else could play them. Morgan Freeman as Red in Shawshank redemption is literally the only one that comes to mind, but every other time I've always thought-there really wasn't a single actor who actually looks like the character that did a similar level of performance? And that's a major factor, if I'm not convinced the actor is the character by the performance, the looks have to pick up the slack. I'm a ginger, so I've seen all the lackluster race swapping done to ginger characters in live action. It is annoying as all get out, especially when the performance doesn't even justify the change itself. It makes it feel like a cheap way to pander at the expense of quality. But Velma feels purposely spiteful.

Best faith interpretation: it doesn't matter as long as the end result is still good, if not even improved due to the change (if only because the race-swapped actor is the perfect fit, like Nick Fury for example). It matters because on the face of it it's an arbitrary change that alienates the adaptation from its source material, but it can be an improvement, or at least it can be neutral. But usually it's neither of them, and that's the case when there are nefarious reasons behind the changes, like active disrespect for the source material (this one for example, or Netflix The Witcher), or ideological possession that disregards anything else. You can be a "progressive", and weave your themes and ideas into a story, and it's usually okay with people as long as the end result is coherent, well-made and interesting.

They showed a million times that Fred is human, he just isn't a strong one, because he's been kept a baby that only acts manly/grown up out of fear for his dad. The show being blatantly obvious and bombarding in its critique is literally why it is largely unfunny and has poor pacing.

@@yannickokpara4861 Except that stereotypes in real life are actual people who've lived a life prior to that and have legitimate reasons to exist other than being pathetic. They have actual reasons to be humans. They don't do that with Fred - He's just pathetic and they keep him there by making his 'humane scenes' an absolute joke, without taking into consideration how messed up it is. I mean this Fred has been constantly belittled by the entire community for his small peepee - I don't care if the show was actually building it as the flaw of the town and not a flaw of his, if that was the point then do it like South Park where they don't antagonize the victim of the one who's being wronged by the community and they actually show the humane part of that character. And yet they instead portray him as the antagonist constantly and keep making him the punching bag for most of the jokes. Not even one single thought of critical thinking is done within the background of the show, and ultimately whatever message they were applying there becomes pointless.

@@Пинагод It's the flawed characters antagonizing him not some divine overlord of pure heart. I honestly don't see where it is justified that they treat him that way. The show literally makes a joke out of Velma being a narrowminded person who is littered with confirmation bias. In terms of Fred, yeah... he is pathetic because he hasn't been nurtured properly. They never make it his fault, they just created characters so narrowminded that they refuse to recognise that the 'evil' characters have reasons/backstory that explain how they're not inherently 'evil' whilst simultaneously ignoring how the 'good' characters use their own backstories to justify bad behaviour. Tbf South Park does a lot of gliding over and simplifying, which makes it easier to watch as an audience. While it depicts things from real life, it's a lot more cartoonier and grotesque, so it ends up carrying a lot less impact. In South Park we laugh about the uncomfortable truths. With Velma there is nothing to hide behind. It's just uncomfortable. Something to keep in mind is that 'real' dialogue is actually fake dialogue. If you do a test screening with 1:1 dialogue from the real life, it will fail with it being cited as ''not believable''. Velma takes it a step further and does a lot of dialogue based on subconcious thought and biases, which makes it even less believable perhaps due to it breaking the experience of escapism too hard. In South Park we don't go on and talk about the social issues in the story. We simply aren't incentivized to. With humour it glides over and trivialises a lot of things that happens by allowing us to simply shrug off the absurdities of the world by laughing at them. In that way it is a lot like actual real life, so it doesn't jar our sense of reality. I'm not saying it is well done or anything, but that is what I believe they have done.

@@yannickokpara4861 The show has justified it the moment they made it the most casual and running joke the entire two episodes and never address it again as a genuine issue that people do - And later on just made Fred obsessed over Velma out of randomness. In fact they made all three other characters have some sort of attraction towards Velma. Yes, it's the first few episodes, however that doesn't negate just how badly they execute whatever writing they have left. Oh, so you think South Park is just all for fun and laughs while Velma was speaking the uncomfortable truth? Then let's compare Velma with Moral Orel, a show that's blatantly uncomfortable - And...Velma falls behind, by a mile. Even an animated show _aimed for kids_ such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish depicted the serious themes (that being panic attacks) of Velma much better and more accurately.

@@Пинагод The whole jist of the show is calling out hypocrisy. Why would they need to address it when they already make it known that the 'holy' characters are extremely flawed. That's not justifing it, that is letting the narrative play out and asking the audience to power on their brain cells and question preconceived notions regardless of political affiliation. Btw they do explain Fred's obsession with Velma with him reading a book about the mystique aka different aspects of being a woman. Of course, the transformation he goes through is completely absurd, but firstly he is a very malleable character and secondly it is simply playing on the scenario where people were willing to instantly see him in a different light if he presented himself differently(as a baby), only now he is the one having a sudden 'enlightenment'. How I see it is that it is both a nod to that and a ridicule of the boy-meets-girl genre where either party is willing to transform their entire worldview as soon as the other shows one redeeming quality in a sea of darkness. I think you'll notice that not only do they also make fun of Norville being a simp, but they also recognise that Velma even as an SJW can't deny the traditional biological attraction of Fred. Just to clear things up, I never said South Park is JUST for fun. I said it uses humor, amongst other things, to glide over things/call out the absurd. My point is that the issues Velma brings up are more exposed in the way they are presented. The show doesn't do as much to guide you. We don't have Stan and Kyle as our(most of the time) moral guardians. It's more like: this is it, go figure. There's less handholding, less pats on the back and less 'let me kiss you where it hurts'. I can tell you this isn't the first time people have looked at Mindy Kailing's work and assumed wrongly about the intention of her writing and her political standpoint. The same thing happened in 2013 where someone took a character's joke the wrong way and assumed she was republican. At the same time she seems to support J.K. Rowling on the transgender issue, so it really just appears to be the case that people struggle to accept the possibility that Mindy Kailing isn't fighting their fight - that she might have equal reservations about conservatives and woke leftists. Am I going to pretend that they execute their narrative well? Absolutely not. Am I going to pretend that they haven't bitten off more than they can chew? Certainly won't. Just watched the 'Puss in Boots' panic attack. That is umm... well yeah, it's a panic attack. It's one way of having a panic attack. Having a panic attack is so wildly different person to person and situation to situation from freezing up to absolute dread to out-of-body experiences to sensory overload to simply getting overwhelmed by running thoughts that may resolve by allowing yourself to think of something else. I think the best part about the 'Puss in Boots' panic attack is how the type of attack relates to what resolves it. Puss is effectively in a different world, which is resolved by grounding, creating a clearly felt barrier between what is real and what is in his head. As a depiction of a panic attack, yeah, I'd give Velma an F. As a depiction of how ignorant people might approach you about your anxiety, I don't think it's terrible. Thinking about it a bit more, for me, personally it hits home with the annoyance I feel about people who throw around real mental health issues willy nilly in actually trivial settings and assume they know what it's like. For example it is not uncommon for people in my country to say they feel 'noia', 'depri' or portray their slight hang for order in an isolated incident for something as crippling as OCD. Just as you say, Velma has a massive problem executing its narrative. It doesn't understand its audience, so there are alot of things it might be trying to communicate that comes off differently. I do think, though, that it is a valid point to make, that people are very used to handholding and not used to ambiguity. Especially for an American audience, I can see how a lack of political polarity would be confusing. Those are obviously just my thoughts. Maybe I'm giving the showrunners too much credit. I do think if you rewatch it, though, you will notice many of these moments where they point out hypocrisy. In fact it is the theme they open with in the girls' shower.

I think it has more to do with the writers and directors veing activists first and writers/directors second. They could have just made this to piss off people whose political views, gender or race they dislike because they get kicks from seeing the outrage.

The reason Pedro works as Joel despite the race difference is because it's subtle enough that he still physically looks but more importantly ACTS enough like Joel for it to pass. You can't get away with extremes especially with beloved characters like that. Taking a white stoner and turning him into an insufferable black guy that "hates drugs" is going to draw ire from fans. Same with Velma. It also depends on WHY the casting choice was made. Starfire being black in the teen titans show for an example... it was clearly because of social and political motivation and people could tell and hated it. I mean could you imagine Blade being a white guy? Fuck no. Don't race swap characters unless it's for a good reason or subtle enough that it still passes as the original character.
@Gerclun
@Gerclun Год назад
I don't give a shit about the race of any person, most of us are blended with different origins and if you look backwards enough through your ancestors you'll find for sure a lot of race mixes. But, I don't get why people are still saying that Pedro Pascal is not white, when he is. He is from Chile where almost 90% of people are white, his father's family comes from the Basque Country in Spain, a country in Europe where almost all the people are white, his mother's family comes from France. And more important, Pascal himself has said several times that he is white. He is as Caucasian as white Americans. Really, I don't understand this confusion. Another thing would be if his physique is similar enough with the video game character, but it's not because there is a race difference.
@USDS_TikTok_Mike
@USDS_TikTok_Mike Год назад
@Gerclun Pedro isn't Caucasian he is of hispanic ethnicity. You can look at someone's skin and say they're white all day but that doesn't mean it's their true ethnicity. I look white in most places but I'm 94% Cherokee. I am not white even if I appear so. Just like someone who is Jamaican might not just identify as solely "black." Lots of people in spain look white but they're not. Either way it doesn't matter. As I said if someone looks and acts enough like a character then they can pull it off no problem regardless of their ethnic background.. but when you take a character white as snow and cast a dark skinned actor for the role, most people aren't going to identify the new version with the character they're familiar with.

@@USDS_TikTok_MikeAn ethnicity is not a race "An ethnicity or ethnic group is a grouping of people who identify with each other on the basis of perceived shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Those attributes can include a common nation of origin, or common sets of ancestry, traditions, language, history, society, religion, or social treatment." The term "hispanic", refers to cultures, people or countries related to Spain, a great amount of hispanics are caucasian. And no, Spain does not have "people who look white but are not", Spanish people *are* white.

3:55 Well, you don't know that. The spanish and portugese are white. They are caucasian. The spanish and portugese invaded and took over South America. Now, the natives there weren't white, obviously. But, they mixed with plenty of spaniards and portugese these last 500 years. Meaning, if there aren't completely caucasian they are mixed with more caucasians than native americans. Mean, they're probably, at least HALF white. There's a reason it's called LATIN America. Because they were taken over by LATIN countries, Spain and Portugal. Same with Latino, is directly referring to this. Same with Hispanic. Hispanic are Spaniards... So, even if all of Central and South America are mixed race, they're probably at least HALF white. Now, don't get me wrong, they're not white like Scandinavians, or Brits or Slavs, but there are many... let's call its sub-races, of caucasian. Just as there are sub-races of native american, african and asian, middle-eastern and pacific (can't remember what they're called).
