Shades of Disney ditching Star Wars' expanded universe and then having the lady running Lucasfilm tell somebody in an interview that it's hard for them because they don't have source material to pull from when writing new stuff.

@@Darth_Conans The "lady" is running Licasfilm for ages and produced some of the most successful films and franchises in Hollywood History. The "EU" was balls to the walls a bunch of more and more incoherent messy stories that got worse and worse, and frankly "Heir of the Empire" could not be done 2017 without recasts, or adapting the hell out of it, which they do now it seems...complain about Lucas first running the franchise into the ground HIMSELF with three godawful movies which best parts and characters are still WORSE than than the worst parts and characters of the Sequels... It is ego for the series to be written this way, and it's also contempt for the fans. The people behind this show hate fans of Halo and despise video game players. The same thing was done to the Wheel of Time series. The writers hate the fans of the books and think they know better and can write a better show than what Robert Jordan created. These people have never won an award or written anything popular, so instead they'll destroy other people's works, as revenge for what they see as recognition they are owed. Narcissistic ego-maniacs that hate and despise normal everyday people. That is exactly what this is all about, ego and contempt.

Speaking of Spartan-IIs and how they show emotion, I'm gonna leave a lore trivia bit here. According to some of the written material, what does it signify when a S-II draws a line across their helmet? Or when they look at another Spartan and point one finger to the ground followed by making a circular motion? If those questions just reminded you of the signals and codes from the books, you might've thought of what I did when imagining the TV show's writers going "but they need to take the helmets off to show emot-" No. No they do not. They never had these 'chips' in the first place, they still FELT emotion but trained to control it, and found all sorts of ways to convey their thoughts and, yes even emotions, to other Spartans without being obvious to everyone around them. Hell, even that brief bit with Kelly and Fred in Forward Unto Dawn felt like it had a tiny bit of that aspect in there. EDIT: Just wanted to add on, there was a huge missed opportunity here for communication based on dozens of body-language cues and non-verbal signals, thrown out the window in favor of straight-forward rage.

In Halo’s case I think where they failed was not having enough faith in the source material. I think they were afraid that having a faceless killing machine wouldn’t draw in a crowd which is a shame because part of what makes Spartans so intriguing is if they are following their programming or if they are actually making choices of their own free will.

The Dredd film is actually based on a story from one of the comics. It was also a film made with respect and love for the source material, since everyone involved were fans. Karl Urban enthusiastically joined the cast and had begged for the role, since he loves the comics. It's clear the Halo series is not made by fans, or anyone that respects the source material. In fact, it appears more as if they hate and despise the fans, games, and books.

Never understand what’s behind the producers’ minds when they have these projects. Did they do research on the target market? When they make movie about games, did it ever cross their minds that the people who play the games are the main consumer group? Sometimes, it just baffles me how easily money goes wasted like this. But hey, let the sales and numbers do the talking, right? Eventually, they’ll know. And maybe eventually we’ll get a cutscene compilation as a movie where it gets good reviews

The Master Chief in the books, though described through different writers, is very reminiscent to the Master Chief seen in the first three games. He is a quiet, focused, badass super soldier who is meant to carry the reader or player through the story directly without separating himself through unnecessary character development. His character developed with the reader, not the writer, and it made him perfect for the main avatar in a video game series. Whether or not this would have converted to television well is beside the point, they abandoned the core mechanic of what made Halo so amazing for readers and players alike. It’s a shameless, poorly written story with no ties to what makes Halo original hoping to bleed the franchise even further by plastering it’s name on the front and drawing viewers from its fan base.

My theory is that the Halo TV series is actually a completely separate Sci-Fi series that Paramount tried to make a few years ago while The Expanse was big, but they couldn't get the green light for it. Fast Forward to a few years later, Sci-Fi isn't dead but The Expanse fire is burning a bit lower and some random studio creator of said sci-fi series says, "Hey, why don't we throw 'Halo' onto that old sci-fi series we tried to make, put some of the human guys in armor and call them Spartans, hot-swap whatever aliens we were gonna use for random Covenant guys, and call it good?" And the Paramount studio execs were like "Hey my grandkids played Halo, I think. Yeah lets do it." And this is what we got.

I feel like they do that a lot more than we think. One of my all time favourite book series, was a book called The Saga of Darren Shan. Without turning this into an hour of me gushing over the book, it was amazing. When they turned the first book into a movie, I was shocked by how little it actually resembled the book, and how it Spoiled plot twists that weren't supposed to be revealed until like book 9 or 10. Then I watched the behind the scenes, n I will never stop being pissed at what the director admitted. He straight up said in an interview, that he had spent years trying to get his story turned into a movie, but nobody would fund it. Then he read Darren Shan, n realised he could use it to make HIS movie...... He was out and proud about how he basically tricked them into funding his story, by slapping someone else's name on it. The self entitled lil prick ruined the plot twists, because he hadn't even read all the books, and had absolutely no respect for the author, his fans, or anyone. He just wanted to make HIS story, and so he slapped someone else's name on it. That was also the when I found out how much creative control authors had to give up, when their books are turned into movies. Once they had the rights to turn his book into a movie, he had absolutely no say in what they did with it. Sometimes they throw the author a bone, n ask their opinions, but most of the time it's just a case of "you got your money, now stfu n gtfo. This is our story now, not yours. We can do whatever we want to it now, and if it bombs, everyone will blame you"

Hell, have scenes of Marines walking to the objective, chiefs all tactical, serious, watching angles, while the Marines are just shooting the shit with each other, and then, have chief interact in minor ways, like responding with single words, or even a nod at a funny joke they tell Then, when chiefs alone, it's his perspective, very few words, a lot of actions to judge him off of, he mostly banters with Cortana, or, in 343 guilty spark, show him being unnerved by all the weird occurrences, leading to the flood release, show him panicked, fighting to get out as fast as possible, all with actions, not chief saying I'm scared Money printer right there Edit: and you don't need action scenes all the time, you can replace encounters with a quicker stealth scene to show off chiefs, and arbiters, stealth talents, or omit them for a bigger fight down the line, it doesn't have to be exactly one to one, some episodes can have more action than others, the ones that don't have as much get the luxury of character establishment and development

Madrigal is much more of a forest than a desert and it’s people were influenced by South American culture as opposed to a desert world that was influenced by Korean culture

Manipulate the pituitary gland just enough to replicate tall muscular soldiers and give them psychological training to focus purely on the mission like a machine, days upon days of rigorous mental and physical testing, and anything that could've been left to chance would be covered by the microchip inside their brains. They have essentially perfected a way to create the ultimate super soldier. But somehow, John just slipped through the cracks with his desire for women. Master Chief did show emotion, but it was SUBTLE. He wasn't shouting and screaming like some angsty teenager, he kept his emotions in check- like a professional. Even when he was visibly angry in his tone, it was justified. He feels scared for the first time in Halo 1 when he encounters the Flood for the first time. He shows his anger when he gets frustrated at Guilty Spark in the Forerunner Library. He has a moment of sadness finding Captain Keyes corpse. He feels fear seeing the Gravemind in Halo 2. In Halo 3, he's even almost happy to see The Arbiter again. In Halo 4, you could see the desperation to save Cortana in his actions. In Infinite, he pays respects to dead Spartan's he discovers, and at the end of the game almost gives his pilot a pat on the back for surviving being tortured - but he pulls back his hand because he's unsure it would help. This is before even reaching the detail the books go into, because while he is just as focused and mission-oriented, they give a closer look into the thoughts of Master Chief.
@Spillow-C
@Spillow-C 6 месяцев назад
yes absolutely, and btw it was very easy try to ACTUALLY adapt his character by using the game character as a base to build upon, by simply making him a badass stoic cowboy like character, with a difficult past that made him like that, doesn't want to speak much so he's a bit harsh with people, avoids conversations because he's a bit afraid to get attached and stuff (because of some loss maybe?), and he vent all of that when he fight in a controlled way, to me it sound very similar to book/games chief but adapted for a tv show. And instead of making it completely mysterious like the games, you put hints of a difficult past he had to endure, through the dialogue, with lots of loss and bad stuff, the Spartan program, which is fu---ed up stuff in the lore from what i know, right?? which you show it with flashbacks in all the first season. So you gave him a reason why he's like that by still being faithful in a general way to the games character, and after established that, he will evolve from it, because Cortana helps him, Cortana is the Key to make Chief work as a character, and the writers of this didn't understand it. its a very cool concept too, the human that he's "the machine", and the machine that he acts very humanly, they work so well on paper, but you had to not be a hack writer.

Master Chief was a trained super soldier taught how to fight and survive, and thats it. The show coulda been so good if it started off with fighting and destruction and surviving against the odds. They coulda slowly added in emotions as he interacts with victims of brutality or when he saves a group of soldiers behind enemy lines. If they introduced a sex scene in season 3 of the show, after developing his relationships and personality in season 1-2, and after an intense life or death battle (or just before), no one would complain. It would have a reason to exist at that point as its own standalone saga. Instead they went 0 to 100 and forgot how film making works and the fact master chief is literally an already fleshed out character before the show. The writers should be fired, the director should be fired, the cinematographers should be fired, everyone should be fired, its all dogshit 90% of the time. When they actually play the parts that match the games, its ok.

Can you imagine if they made the TV show based around Sgt. Johnson during the events of Halo CE? Sure we could have the Master Chief part of the show, BUT he'd probably be used sparingly, depending on where Johnson and the Chief would meet in the game, and when he would be seen, we'd see Master Chief fight like a God of War, leading Johnson and the Marines, before he would break away from Johnson and do his thing. Then midway through the show, you'd see Johnson's perspective of their encounter with the Flood, and they could have paid tribute to the Halo Graphic Novel by portraying how he managed to narrowly escape the flood. Towards the end of the season the stakes are high as he manages to regroup with a few marines and a Naval Officer, and they desperately fight their way through the Covenant and the flood, to a pelican that they would use to evacuate Halo, before it's destroyed. (Which would be a nice reference to Halo: First Strike) Of course Johnson would retain his expected humor and charisma throughout the season, showing off his enhanced abilities, as he was a SPARTAN-1, which gave him improvements throughout his body. Such a missed chance for Paramount, at the very least they could have had a competent director work with a team of knowledgeable people of the Halo series, to create literally anything that would have been better than the hot garbage that this show ended up being. I would have rather used the time I spent watching this show, to play the games instead.

Imagine if they did the show as a retelling of the Og trilogy, but with flashbacks to the books as well. Ep. 1 starts off with a low lit pelican, the shadowed faced of young Dr. Halsey & Lt. Keys are dimly lit by flashing red lights alerting those aboard of imminent landing. They are discussing the spartan program. Halsey answers a question with "that's classified" and Key's responds in a manner that makes it seem that it wasn't the first time he had gotten that answer. As the lander opens, Halsey mentions something about a particularly suitable candidate for the experiment and the camera pans across the school to a young boy, kicking ass at king of the hill. Transition aboard the pillar of Autumn. Exposition between Captain Keys & Cortana just like the game. Closeup on keys' eyes to emphasize age difference, then pan to the pipe. Zooms into the ember of his pipe, transitions from key's pipe to Sgt. Johnson's cigar embers. He is in a lower hold, giving the legendary version of the speech to the marines. Get a wide shot of the pillar of autumn being dwarfed by the size of the ring, and show the covenant ships closing in. play intro sequence. The muted sound of speech can be heard from the other side of a frozen door. As it the ice melts, and the door opens the audience hears "Sorry for the quick thaw master chief, things are a little hectic right now." From there the episode would follow the first level of CE. Episode ends with Chief's pod "landing" and him getting KO'd Episode 2 starts with his earliest memories in the spartan program, becoming spartan 117 & being teamed up with 2 other kids and told to complete an obstacle course as a team. It takes a few tries to get it right, the instructor emphasizes the necessity of teamwork, and that nobody can win alone. this is most of the episode. Chief wakes up to Cortana yelling at him to get up, the pod is a crumpled, gory mess. He calmly takes weapons and ammo from the dead, and proceeds to kill some aliens, and 2 banshees before hearing about survivors and episode ends there. Mix up the order as to when, how, and for how long to do the flashbacks vs game content and repeat until you're out of source material. Or ya know, make a show about ODST in the early days of the war and leave the Spartans out until season 1 finale. That way you have a whole season of establishing the covenant as powerful foes, and elites as the bowel cleansing death machines they are, before you bring in the cavalry.

When the film rights to The Crow were bought they told the creator "We want to make a musical starring Michael Jackson." After a minute of silence the creator looked at the studio heads and said "Why did you spend all this money to acquire the rights to use my work when you are going to turn it into something completely different?" We need more of this kind of response to studios when they acquire the adaptation rights to anything.

18:06 ironically having some steal Chiefs armor feels like it could be a better story than what we got. You could go with the whole angle of ep 1 you don't reveal the face till the very last scene or somehow reveal that the man in the suit ain't chief adding mystery to the character despite showing his face and just leave people incredibly confused about what happened and you just play like run the story of how he got the armor through flash backs or something and from there have the season finale be actually having chief show up to take the armor

If I recall, they actually spent a bit of time on the ring before MC blew it up. The survivors were also able to establish Alpha Base, so imagine some episodes based around Marines doing side missions as a small break from MC's perspective, and have it end with them linking back up with MC when they infiltrate the Covvie ship at night. Stuff like that would've been so cool.

And you can't even say it was SJW's that ruined it. They straight washed a canon Asexual character. In the books, it's said that due to the treatments Masterchief had to undergo suppressed his sexual urges. It wasn't a chip he could just pull out. Was it the best possible Ace representation? No. But it was one of the only ones Asexuals had. For 20 years, he was a representative of the Asexual community and they got rid of it so he could commit a war crime by sleeping with a P.O.W.

I would've made the tv show centered around the side characters and left Master Chief to be this mysterious bigger than life character that comes in for the save like he so often does in the game. That way you can build hype, mystery, and anticipation for him instead of immediately killing off all anticipation by showing his face right away. Use him and the covenant to move the plot around while building him and the story and drama around him up with the side characters. This also allows you to keep the story as it is within the games, but making it different in way that keeps things interesting and reveals more information about the world around them and the characters that don't get as much spot light in the games, bringing them to the forefront. I'd center a lot of the show around dr. halsey, her daughter, (Depending on what time the story is taking place, the Spartan IV's or odst, whether it's before or after the fall of reach), Miranda Keyes, Avery Johnson, John Hawkins, or even The Arbiter depending on what story you're focusing on. Either way there are a lot of great side characters with some amazing stories to flush out. Like with John Hawkins and his redemption arc from the betrayal and shame his father brought. Or Jacob Keyes and his crazy victory against Covenant over the planet Sigma Octanus IV. And his conflict against Thel 'Vadamee (The Arbiter before he gains the title) in Halo The Cole Protical which would sow the doubt sown within the Arbiter's mind about the Prophets. And eventually having Keyes captured and assimilated by the flood so Master Chief has to kill him would be absolutely crazy. There's just so many good stories to flush out with the side characters, that I would only show Master Chief during critical times where he comes in and saves the day which would give a huge pay off.

I was hesitant on this series to begin with so I waited until the season finished and used my paramount plus free trial. Here's my takeaway after binging it. Spoiler warning: PROS: -Some of the casting was pretty solid, I actually think the actor they chose for master chief was a good pick, only the writing was lacking. -the set work was pretty awesome, some cool visual locations -the special effects were pretty top notch, not surprising since Spielberg had a hand in producing the show. -the tributes to the game were pretty well-done/tasteful (sound effects, fps camera shots, jokes, Cortana's VA, etc.) CONS: -This show had some of the weakest writing on any show I've ever witnessed, and for that, the actors and fans suffered the most. That's where I fault the failings of this show. -Aside from a few things, pretty much the whole season was a bastardization of Halo lore. -Initially, I thought removing the helmets/suits of the Spartans was the wrong idea and that they should've followed Mandalorian formula, however I quickly realized that the suits were way too bulky to do every single scene that didn't involve combat and I understood their approach to trying to humanize the Spartans more in their formal/civilian-wear HOWEVER they 100% overused this approach. Chief removes his helmet in the first episode, come on! It feels like the Spartans spent more time out of their suits then in them. ALSO, these Spartans who are expertly trained warriors were using the dumbest logic when removing their helmet in certain scenarios... especially combat scenarios exposing themselves multiple times. Basically, any time they were in the field/on-mission, their helmets should have just remained on. -A serious lack of full (suited-up) action scenes. There seemed to be only 3 of these scenes, one in the first episode, one in the last, and one somewhere in the middle. That's a complete failure for a Halo series. -In a tv series, it's expected that we would get new characters to flesh out the world a little bit, but so many of the supporting characters felt like self-insertion sci-fi ideas from the writers who probably failed to publish it in a book or something akin. Moreover, many of them had no point to even exist beyond one episode and took away from Chief and the Spartans significantly, and their storyline didn't even converge into the main story of the season at all. Prime examples being Kwan Ha, Makee, and Vinsher. Outside of ep 1 & 2, Kwan Ha's story felt like pointless filler. Makee was a totally weird, unnecessary, and unexplained addition who quite frankly just distracted from what should've been Chief & Cortana's arc alone, and Vinsher was basically a local crime lord for JUST Kwan Ha's story (and what a waste of Burn Gorman! Also, not discrediting the other actors, they did fine for what they were given to work with). On the flip side, I thought Soren was an excellent character for the supporting cast and was at least interesting. A spartan who fled the program and knew Chief, but he got tied up in Kwan Ha's lackluster filler. -Why on earth would they not include Blue Team in this show, even if it's an 'alternate timeline'? No offense to the new Spartans they introduced for Silver team: Kai, Vannak, and Riz. I thought they were all pretty cool and well acted but they could've been introduced later on in the show as more Spartans or something. Any Halohead I personally know of would've wanted to see Kelly, Fred, and Linda in live-action and being fleshed out further... characters beloved almost as much as chief. They could've even worked Sam into the narrative somehow. All this time wasted on pointless side characters they created specifically for this show, when they could've been giving life to Blue Team... showing them off in their off-mission/civilian life, giving them their own subplots, etc. It would've made so much more sense for this show.

You know that scene where “chief” punches the covenant followed with an awkward face closeup? That would have been fine, maybe good, if the show was showing Chief as a kid punching other students with a close up shot. That would’ve made things better and much more logical. Since there is already a face to associate with and he was in fact more human back then.

20:52 Hey wtf halo 4 actually had an amazing story. It’s the first game which developed Master Chief’s character emotionally and it was done in a really great and subtle way. I love how the campaign starts off with Chief making it his mission to save Cortana from rampancy but is almost immediately side tracked with stopping the impending doom that the didactic presents to humanity. Ultimately Chief ends up failing to save Cortana just as he failed to save those scientists from disintegrating right in front of him. This game introduced the theme of helplessness and failure to Master Chief showing he’s not a perfect protector as well as him acknowledging that he’s not a machine but just human and I love it for that.
