Benjamin has kind of an Elvis upper lip thing going on in this one. The King of Cool onstage. Any bassist would gives his soul to have that combination of playing ability, superb lead vocals and a commanding stage presence. In my opinion only McCartney surpasses him and that's some elite company.
What a beautiful song is You 're the girl , sweet soft and harmonious melody ...a little sad . Ben is my favorite The Cars but i can't imagine Ben singing this song ( i know, i know that Ben's voice could have sung it ) ..but i think it only looks good on Rick ... Oh Elliot Easton is so perfect like always! ..I love the Cars ❤❤ We miss Ben and Rick ❤❤❤
Benjamin was a hottie of the first degree...like a gentle Rutger Hauer with the voice of an angel! I love this look for him. He was cute as a brunet but that sexy blond hair really brought out the hottie! True fans of the Cars will never forget Benjamin.
Left-handed guitarist is damn good, also Ben`s voice is great...!Rest in peace Ben... Double Trouble - WOW!!!I think it belongs to the best songs of all time. (BTW:I was 5 in that time)
I remember watching this the first time it aired and it just ripped. I love Double trouble. and if you check it close, Ben flubs the lyrics @6:12 by singing when you come to town (he catches and says down), when he should have said it keeps you down. He ends up repeating it to get back on with the band. Even then he's ice cool as always. love it. The solo by Elliott is amazing, not sure if that's live or not, he did change to a Les paul which would make sense.
great video!! :) Double Trouble is one of my favorite Cars songs...I wish there were more live performances of it! Hell, I just wish there were more live Cars DVDs in general. I feel like someone's just sitting on a vault of old footage that'll never see the light of day. Thank goodness for RU-vid!
Awesome performance. No way they're lipsynching........the synth intro to You are the girl" is different. Elliott and Easton and Robinson's accuracy gives it away as well. Was played on the radio just then so I felt like listening to 'you are the girl' again :)
I first saw "Double Trouble" when the Cars played it on Saturday Night Live. An absolutely unbelievable song when the Cars sang it live. It was horribly butchered by their record label when it was released on 45 RPM record (the dominate single medium then). One of the few songs I know that would have benefited greatly by the live version being released rather than the studio version. Still quite sad how the song is not remembered.
Didn't Ric shove Roy Thomas Baker and Mutt Lange outta the way and demand he produce the last album? Another reason Ben was pissed at Ric and his tyrannical ways. And another valid reason the band fell apart during this time.
@@GooglSucksDisk Ric was “done “ with the whole thing. Writing the songs, touring, and being in charge. He had everything worked out when the went into the studio to recordD2D. He just told everyone to do what he worked out. In Ben’s biography, it said Ben did his part and just left the sessions.
this was their last single. they went out on top. sounding great live as always. I wish the did what the beatles did and stop touring and just release records. i saw their last tour in 87 at the garden and it wasn't sold out :(
@juancagye definitely no playback -- those are monitors in front of them so they can hear themselves play - Elliott changed guitars for the second song - the sound of the instrumentals match their movements exactly (look at Greg's hands and David's drums), as do the vocals these guys were excellent musicians, they didn't need to fake their shows, they were the real deal
Door to Door has a riff that is similar to one in Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name. Ben made a repetitive song interesting by putting little twists in each line. Beautiful voice, interesting and versatile singer. He was best when he sang Ric's songs and worked with the other great talents in the Cars. Each part was so carefully constructed--great melodies playing off each other. And Elliot and Greg were as brilliant as anyone. They should be in the R&R H of F -- now!
yeah. he looks sad and weary. Also, a little shy or sheepish; almost embarrassed. Things must have been tense. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There's an article in the Rolling Stone, Oct 18, 2019 about Ric. It had more honesty and reality than anything written or said about him or the band prior. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/the-mystery-of-ric-ocasek-900031/
It is the music thats recorded-but they aren't lipsyncing-he screws up in the second verse and says why don't ya dream anymore again. The second line of the studio version is why don't ya talk anymore.
I think the lead vocals are live. All other tracks are pre-recorded. Even with the guitar change you notice that none of the guys is plugged in. The Cars never used wireless tech.
rkl17 There was also a conflict between Ric and Ben... they were barely speaking to each other. Ric has said in interviews that it was no longer fun for them to be together and so it was time to call it quits.
@@J_McGovernNo wonder that there wasn`t much fun to be together , if we think about the situation in the studio during recording the last album ( with Ric as the only producer). Besides, the last tour wasn`t so successful as previous ones, and Ric , who hated touring , decided to cancel it. Elliot mentioned that Ric said to him that he felt burnt out at that time..Also, I read an interview with Greg Hawkes , who told that they all didn`t get along and needed the break ( understandable after 11 years` non-stop activity ).
@@dianagocawska5828 Ric was a jerk to his band mates. At different times each one wanted to write and be more involved. Ric wanted to be big boss. Benjamin had some song's he wanted the band to do and Ric shot him down. He called it quits. The band didn't have a say so. He was jealous of Benjamin since he put out his own album and had Greg and David in his video
@@VUrban-yr5ch Yes, you are absolutely right. "It was time " for Ric to solve the problems inside the Band connected with Ric's ego. I think, THEY ALL except Ric, would opt for a break not the end. Elliot mentioned that he felt sort of shocked when Ric told him about leaving the band. Ric planned the big tour in USA, Japan, Europe . But a minor than expected success of D2D , which Ric was an only producer, made Ric change his plans. I also think that Ric was jealous of Ben, not only about his voice and look. "The Lace " made a great success and Ben earned An ASCAP award for video for the "Stay the night".👍👍😆
Yeah, MTV sucks. I loved their SNL performance of the song, The Cars had some real energy and power live, evident more by the music, they don't need to jump around.
I might be overthinking this, but it’s almost looks like he’s not in the best of health in this video. Could be the lighting. Still gorgeous, nevertheless! ❤️
