please do not come up with your own magic ratios, it makes it a nightmare for everyone (such as those with projector screens who has to make a new lense preset). It's very simple: You either go 16:9 or 2.4 (21:9-ish) , that's it! no ifs and butts. Yea so this is a load of crap. "Your screen on desktop is 16:9 but nobody really watches on full screen" ... yea so I literally watch 90% of my videos IN FULL SCREEN. I'm new to the video industry but not incompetent nor inexperienced... You talk the cine talk but the reality is the majority of your Netflix and other platform films ARE FULL SCREEN. The newest of the new movies are yes... full screen. This so called regurgitated nonsense "trend" has been tried and tried on youtube for 10+ years. 16:9 is still the ratio the majority watches. now there's a time I use 2:35:1 maybe for some intros and other reasons even a 1:35:1 or something but I'm sorry bro... this is all kinds of weird on this whole "wrong use 18x9" stuff. Why on earth would anyone want black bars? This is purely CREATIVE choice, not a federally national applied SAG-AFTRA requirement. Stop trend marketing man, you're promoting false perception contaminating others that simply have no path to follow like a lot of camera clubs too. 16:9 is for a fact not wrong and is widely used in the ACTUAL non youtube/social media film industry.

BAD IDEA! People can just Zoom to Fill on their mobile device. Nearly all televisions are standard 16:9, you want your viewers to see top and bottom black bars? But.. mobile devices are all over the place in AR, and not all candy bar phones. Changing to 18:9, you're stretching, not cropping unless you record in a higher Res to account for this irregular and non-standard AR. Understand what happens when you stretch an image to fit rather than a proper crop in native res.

No. Adopt 2:1, because 16:9 is becoming outdated and when watching videos on smartphones, there are two HUGE black bands that are used to complement the image that 16:9 does not complement on a smartphone with a 21:9 screen, for example. 2:1, in addition to being easy to calculate (in FHD it is 2160x1080), gives us only small black bands in 16:9 (as opposed to 21:9) or, if cropped, there is no major image loss. It also applies to smartphones, where when zooming in on a RU-vid video, there is no big crop like there is from 16:9 to 19:9 or 20:9 (standard smartphone aspect ratios). In other words, you don't know what you're talking about.

I would say this depends on audience and contents. For me, I got an 32:9 ultrawide monitor on my pc so I get less of the side black bars which I like :) But if the viewer only got a 16:9 monitor then they get top and bottom black bars, which can be more cinematic though, but not for everyone. And if the user is on mobile, then the question becomes what orientation they watch in. If they watch in portrait mode they will still get the same width of video, but the height will look smaller due to the aspect ratio in order to fit it on screen. So for shorter videos where the viewer might not get into the video enough to switch to landscape, this feels like it could be worse. But longer videos it might be nice. At the end of the day, which is better just depends :) The only thing I would say is, do NOT hardcode black bars through an entire video. If you do it for smaller parts that is fine. But doing it for an entire video looks horrible for wider screens cause then you get black bars on all sides. If you want a more cinematic experience, then changing aspect ratio to 21:9 (or something similar) as this video showed is the way to go!

@GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur 19 дней назад
If the original image has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 (16:10 aspect ratio), editing and exporting it in 16:9 will result in small black bars. To avoid this, it's best to maintain the original 16:10 aspect ratio for both editing and exporting. Also, exporting the video in 4K with the 2560 x 1600 resolution will lead to upscaling. It's important to be aware that 2560 x 1600 is not a 4K resolution. If you intend to upscale the video to 4K, it's recommended to export it at 3456 x 2160. This way, the original 16:10 aspect ratio will be preserved even in the upscaled 3456 x 2160 resolution. Keep in mind that a 16:10 video will display black bars on a 16:9 TV, but a 16:10 image will not show black bars on a 16:10 PC monitor. Most 16:10 monitors have a native resolution of 1920 x 1200. Additionally, many smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, iPhone 14, or iPhone 15 Pro Max models, have an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, which is wider than 16:10. Therefore, displaying a 16:10 image on these phones will result in black bars. If the image's aspect ratio is not as wide as 19.5:9, some cropping may occur when viewing it on these phones.

@@martinbishop9042 16:9 is becoming outdated. We consume a lot of media content on smartphones, and none are manufactured with a 16:9 screen ratio anymore. My smartphone is 20:9, and there are smartphones up to 21:9. When I consume 16:9 content on my smartphone, two huge black bars appear on one side or the other, and when I zoom in, in addition to the image losing quality, any text on the screen is cut off, as it looks like they forgot to use an area text security of at least 80%. 18:9 fixes this issue by using an 85% safe area. I can pan & scan both to 16:9 and 21:9, without losing much image quality and without any information in the safe text area being cut, in addition, if I don't want to pan & scan and want letterbox or pillarbox, I only see small black bands and not big ones, like 16:9. In other words, 2:1, in addition to being easy to calculate (2:1 in 720p is 1440x720, simple!), is a middle ground screen ratio between the now obsolete 16:9 and the futuristic 21:9.

Even this video I have black bars on sides. On my phone!

Okay so I was doing this with my videos for a while, and RU-vid wouldn’t let me add an end screen card to my videos because their end-screen is formatted to the 16:9 ratio. What’s the work around? Also this video still had the black bars on the side when I was watching horizontally on my phone, not sure why!

Trying this aspect ratio out in my next video. I got to say, It's a little bit weird editing videos this way, just not as familiar to the eye, but lets see how it turns out 😀

Bro your video still has black bars on the sides when in landscape on a phone. This is proper 2:1 from yours truly. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KrP4pqo15co.htmlsi=5IWukg02xO3wSYMZ You'll notice that my video fills the whole screen on a phone when in landscape. Simply cutting off the top and bottom doesn't make your video wider. Shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio like I did, change your sequence to 3328x1664 and then slightly crop in to get the framing you want. Boom you've got a 2:1 aspect ratio that actually fills the phone screen.

This is terrible advice. Your video has vertical black bars on everything BUT a phone. It looks awful.
@LcFG_AS

His video only has subtle black bars above and below, something that would be worse with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Furthermore, a lot of people consume YT on their cell phones and it's horrible to have two huge black bars because everything is still 16:9 and cell phones are already arriving in 21:9. 18:9 is a middle ground, where I can zoom in on RU-vid on my cell phone and not lose much of the image, in addition to the black bars being small.

Love this! I've been using mostly 2:1 aka 3840:1920 to be able to use end screens as you said, and 3840:1624 for more anamorphic / cinematic effect on our short films ❤‍🔥

I'm not a RU-vidr but am a producer -- and -- not at all concerned as a consumer. With a good number of excellent new films exploring narrower aspect ratios, I'm definitely leaning the opposite direction in my preferences. If 16x9 and even 4x3 is good enough for the Spielbergs, Wes Andersons and Academy award nominees out there.. I'm all for it, and love the increased emphasis on the vertical in these narrower frames.

Check out Chris Hau’s “Why you should stop shooting video in 16:9 aspect ratio”. He recommends 4:3. This resolution provides a more effective solution to editing horizontal video to vertical video.

I'm getting too old to figure things out. I just need to be told what to do. Thanks for telling me. It that applicable for other platforms? Actually, my project... adventure vids POV style with just my phone. "Full" aspect setting right? Trying to reach a balance that lets me film and enjoy. Not sure it can be done. I been trying for 20 yrs., never succeed, but as Mike would say... "let's give it a go". Thanks for the info "accent dude, it was very helpful". Now, if you can just tell me how to move my photos from Dropbox without upgrading. What a scam! Thanks again! 👴
