The slither like pattern on the blade is called a flamberge and these were not common but were very prized by knights and landsnechts in German. The flamberge is practical because for 2 reasons I've heard of 1 is that it imitates serrations but it doesn't get caught on armor making cuts and thrusts more lethal. 2 when parrying other blades the flamberge pattern hits the opponents blade multiple times causing the blade to vibrate and flex making it less wieldy and easier to dispatch opponents.

Actually, Recurve blades and Hawkbill blades are very practical when it comes to slicing through material, because instead of a belly you find on skinning knives, it's a belly delete lol.. it hooks onto and catches onto the material, and holds it in especially on a pull cut or drag cut. whereas more belly would slide out more easily.. the point of serrations, a belly delete is another solution. I just made that term up but it sounds cool.

Nah, it sucks. There are reasons why basically no swords used this design, especially in Japan, where making a blade like this was basically impossible because Japanese steel was terrible, which is why they had to resort to folding the steel used to make Katanas over and over again in the first place. Only Europeans were capable of making a blade like this but it still would have been out-performed by a normal straight blade.

@Dushmann_
@Dushmann_ Год назад
@@Watcher97 Yeah, that's what I said: Japanese steel sucked. You don't need to repeatedly fold steel "1000 times" when your steel doesn't suck. Katanas and European swords may have been evenly matched in terms of durability, strength and craftsmanship, but European swords were a lot easier and faster to make. In the time it took for a master Japanese smith to make 1 katana, a European smith of lesser skill could have made 5 swords that were just as good as that katana in every aspect. That's not because European smiths were inherently superior to Japanese smiths nor does it mean that Katanas were superior to European swords, it was simply because Japanese steel sucked (or at least the iron they used to make it did) and it caused the whole process of making a sword much longer, harder and time-consuming. I'm not sure about this, but I think that Europeans also invented a furnace which made their already superior steel even better.
@gloom727
@gloom727 Год назад
@@Dushmann_ not really. Think about it like this. If everyone could half sword in Europe they could potentially grab the sword you're using against them. "Completely impractical" With a casual Flamberge blade Okay to all you goombas saying it's kris style, they both have a wavy design that provide almost the exact same benefits, also going out of anime and other media, one of the main weapons of Japanese warriors was the spear (The most used being the bow), now the point/function of that blade is to pull down spears, rendering them effectively useless for a short time in combat.

All of you butthurt clearly missed the point of the video. He's referring to slicing which Katana's are known for. In that sense, it's impractical. Other than that, that is the reason you don't see a lot of other cultures adopting this type of sword except for Malaysia and Indonesia (to my knowledge). All of you sound triggered that your cultural sword/cultural weaponry was called impractical. There's a reason why this wasn't a common blade. Compared to other swords, this is very much impractical. That is why this got out competed by other swords.
