i always thought trying to 'ring out' your opponent should be legal since it's ridiculously hard in all but the most perfect circumstances. the caveat is you would need to put cushions around the ring and that would affect seating/gate so i can see why no fighter is demanding it.

This just reminds me that Dusty Rhodes booked the finals of the Bunkhouse Stampede to be a Battle Royale Cage Match, where instead of throwing the opponents over the top rope, they instead had to throw them out of the cage. Long story short, the match sucked and of course Dusty put himself over. MMA seems like a weird one wherein... Most sports tack on a bunch of extra rules over time, and some of them seem silly, but ultimately are there because someone was doing something which made the sport marginally less safe. But in a sport which is all about harming your opponent, while they do have a lot of those rules, many of them also boil down to "why am I not allowed to do this?" "Because that kills your opponent."

there was a time in wrestling where water around the ring was somewhat common in wrestling back in the 1950s. I do remember watching clips of matches were wrestlers were thrown out of the ring and into a pool of water that surrounded the ring, so the idea of a "moat" outside of a fighting area is not totally unheard of.

Climbing a chain link fence is extremely easy if you dexterous. If you can get your knee higher than your ear it’s easy. I can climb a fence taller than me in 2 seconds. At one point I could have thrown someone over one but not anymore lol.
