The part about not seeing growth. I started writing everything I was doing and wanted to do in the game on a personal blog like a journal and it was really fun for me to see my own progress and growth as I learned new things and got better. That probably gets harder to see as you learn and know more things, I didn't even think about progress in that way while trying to grind for gear I want but there is progress there too. It probably helps when you know what you don't know and can work towards it, but yeah definitely important to compare yourself to where you used to be in terms of progression.

This is a very good idea. I have used this goal setting in real life. It didn’t even dawn on me to apply that to FFXIV. Thank you for pointing out this obvious skill building technique. Once again I am pushing on the pull doors.

My FC leader who has been around since 1.0, and myself as co-lead who has played since 2.1 also had this issue; feeling like we've lost that spark for the game we still both love. We formed our FC with the goal of helping new players, sprouts and returners all alike, enabling them to do whatever content they want and help introduce them to the game. We then live vicariously through the wonder in their eyes as they experience something incredible for the first time. Being able to use my experience to help others and foster their excitement is what brings me joy. (Also rescuing my FC leader to death when he makes me play healer, this too sparks joy = w =)

this was my first real mmo. I didn't understand anything so I started as a thaumaturge. I didn't really start to understand the game and enjoy it until I started doing the fishing quests. I think sometimes you have to change direction in order to know exactly what you want from the game.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can make a hundred mistakes, but once you’ve learned to optimize just a little bit, you’ll have that forever. In those mistakes, you’ll learn vital lessons and you’ll slowly get better without you even realizing it. Someone in my FC said “You’re a very good tank, I remember when you were mediocre at best” and it blew me away because it was at that moment that I realized I had gotten better. Those small, incremental improvements in efficiency in the midst of countless mistakes was not realized by me until someone pointed it out that I had become a good tank without me even realizing a difference. So now when people ask me for advice, I tell them to practice. Gaining experience as a player is the only way to get better. You can read all you want about optimal rotations and I think that’s mostly a mistake, because it takes away your learning curve. Only you can discover what works for you, and that discovery involves countless mistakes. If you want to get good at your role, you cannot depend on the mistakes of others to discover what works for you. Only your mistakes will do that. So go out there and make a million mistakes. And each time, figure out how to combat that mistake. And one day, you’ll realize that you’re better than you thought. Don’t be afraid to be a noob. We all sucked at our roles once before. And don’t feel rushed to get better, that will only impede your real progress as a player.

When I'm in a difficult fight with a group of other players, whether they are friends or randoms, I always post encouragement in chat after a death. Moreso in FFXIV than I already did in other games. When someone is getting especially frustrated after a wipe I ask them 2 questions: What did we lose from dying? And what did we gain? Most of the time they don't know how to answer, so I tell them. We lost nothing but a little time, but we gained knowledge and experience. That's a fair trade, and a necessary one for the hardest challenges out there. Edit: I am not talking about raids or ultimate, though I guess my statement could apply to those to some extent. I am talking about literally any challenge this game throws your way just when playing through. I am talking about frustration that is clearly inward. Players who are having a hard time learning a new boss mechanic, like in Moggle Mog or Odin, even in just the story and dying 2 or 3 times. Because I hope that getting them started on that line of thinking helps them if they do get to ultimates or something. I am not a raider. I never have been, I never will be. I have never been in a raid that completed with any decent speed or precision. It isn't what I do. I just run dungeons/trials and help people I see.
@mosley3485
@mosley3485 2 года назад
I don't see much frustration in practice parties unless it's "practice from x" and people are causing wipes long before the party ever reaches x. What did we lose? Time. What did we gain? The knowledge that a certain player should have joined a practice from start party. Frustration in kill/farm parties when people have joined despite the fact that they aren't capable of killing or farming the fight is also understandable IMO.
@ramenjd6239
@ramenjd6239 2 года назад
It’s not uncommon to see people being dishonest about how much they have seen the fight in a prog party. Yes it’s okay to die one or two times to the same mech, but when people make the same mistakes without improving, it’s extremely frustrating Not even to mention in some clear/farm extreme trials pf where people have no clue what they’re doing and constantly dying, and they got the clear mainly because they got carried in one of the many many pulls
@starofaetherius
@starofaetherius 2 года назад
@@mosley3485 you make some good points but I will clarify: I was not talking about frustration with other people in high level play. I'm not a raider. I run dungeons and trials and try to teach people who struggle with things. Hell I'm not even a mentor. I was talking about inward frustration from just not being able to get a clear. I often see this in normal King Moggle Mog and Odin as examples. Being mad with a player at high level in an ultimate or something for lying about their competence is a seperate conversation.

I was always worried about dipping my toes into high-end content, as I thought I wouldn't be good enough for it. Then one day as I was talking about wanting to do the Endwalker EX trials, a friend of mine said to just go for it and to expect to fail over and over again before I even get close to beating one. So I just went for it, recruited people on party finder for EX1, and went for it. Cleared it first time, although I do feel like I got carried through that one. Next week I tried EX2, and after several wipes and about 45 minutes, we cleared it. EX3 caused a lot of problems for me. First time we ran out the timer and couldn't clear it. I was doing pretty horribly, but I also recorded my attempts, so for the following week I took the time to analyze what I did wrong and how I could do better. Then a week after my first attempt, I tried again. After a couple wipes, our party just disbanded, but we got much closer than last time. I was kinda frustrated about that, but it lit a flame in me that made me just want to go for it again almost immediately. So the morning after, I made another attempt... and cleared it first time. The sense of euphoria I felt was completely different from pretty much any other clear I've done in FFXIV before. It actually made me want to do more high-end content in the future, and you bet I'll be doing more EX trials as they come out, and later I'll probably dip my toes into Savage. And I don't know if I ever would have done EX in the first place if not for that push from my friend. Moral of the story is, you don't fail until you give up, so don't. All that hard work you put into practicing and even failing is going to pay off and bring the greatest sense of joy once you finally get that clear.
@MrMoogle

That last comment you read is so true. I always think I had a terrible run in a dungeon or trial and then people say I did a great job. I think the more you know, the more you catch yourself doing wrong that others would never even think about. Therefore, you end up thinking you played poorly when you did well compared to the average player.

Depending on your health, age is a factor when it comes to gaming. I remember a time when I could stay focused in FF11 online for 9 hours straight for Absolute Virtue. That was about 18 years ago. Now, I can barely keep tunnel vision. I can't keep up with everything else outside my own character. So when some fails a mechanic or not doing the right cooldown, all those things goes over my head.

The part about "am I getting old?" LOL. Yes, I'm 67 and have gotten old. I absolutely do not have the reaction time I did 10 or more years ago. "You don't need good reaction time" if you're 40 or 50 because your reaction time is still good enough. But at 65+ yes, yes you do. But you know, if you absolutely know what you should be doing, then you can be at least ok at it. IF. You do have to know, and it's that knowing that I fall short on and fail with. I did not know exactly when that was going to happen and what to do about it. The big question I have a lot of times is "What just happened" lol - and usually no one answers. "We all got blown back because..." ok he did a thing. How did you know that was about to happen? He'll have a cast bar with that exact thing on it? What it the name of it so I can watch for it? I'm often right up there in the boss's rear and don't see things that are clear when you're way over there. If I do the fight on another job where I'm far enough away to see it all, then that job is still unfamiliar to me enough that I'm unsure what to do even if I can see what's about to happen. Eh maybe I just need another year on other jobs to get better at my main job. What a lot to learn one thing. I need help. I wont run it repeatedly and keep failing to learn because that is a fun killer and it seems to take me much too long to understand it. No one will point out the thing etc. in such a way as it's clear to me. Or ever at all usually. And I never was a "top raider" to begin with. It seems to take me well... in some ways a full year to "get it." That's how long it took me to just not worry about new stuff and go do it. Now I'm free to go in and then make all the many mistakes I make and "get carried." But I do want to improve, have improved, and eventually will get better I expect. Because in spite of the setbacks and lack of progress, I still enjoy the game. But it isn't difficult to be discouraged. Been more than a year, haven't found any group I can just do things with, am not even sure I've found a FC I like extremely well. But the actual game, well there's always flowers and scenery to see again like it's the first time i played when I make a new anonymous alt (that will be deleted or just shelved) and just fade into being yet another "new player" for a while. Once I found a new FC I liked better that way. Now it's many months later and Im unsure about it being "my FC" but it's still better than any I've been in. Remember, I am 67 and yes I am getting old and yes it does take me longer because of that. And I really really absolutely hate it. But I can't do anything about it except keep trying.

A really important take home message is that don't focus too hard on the end goal, but set realistic small goals along the path to your end goal. A big ambitious goal can easily paralyze you and then in the end it may see unobtainable. Think of it as climbing Mt Everest, you do not simply jump up from its base to its peak in one go, but there is a journey, preparations and struggle to reach the peak. The same goes for ffxiv or anything in life really visualize small achievable steps and take note of whats happening on your journey. More often than not you will be surprised to see that you've made huge progress along the way as long as you take the time to reflect and compare to how it all started. I am a perfectionist however I've learned through the years that expecting perfection right of the bat is unrealistic, but by making tons of major or minor mistakes, identifying said mistakes and correcting I can make progress almost every single day in my goal of being highly proficient at the jobs I play or the fights I want to do.

as a black mage player Im always over critiquing myself on everything, like "if I stood a bit to the left could I be casting longer" and "i should have used my thunder while I was in ice phase instead of wasting fire casts refreshing my dots" and its worse in end walker because Im trying to factor in my triple cast while the boss is moving and then placing down my funny circle in times when the boss is calmed down... I am even experimenting with putting down my funny circle in places that I know will be safe to help me dodge quick attacks going to other players and back to it before engaging in funny circle vibe time

As a blm main myself, don't worry about refreshing your thunder dot in fire phase or ice phase, it's not a potency loss using it in fire phase as long as you get your 6 Fire IVs and Despair cast. I get the over critical attitude though too. I can get really frustrated at myself when I don't sharpcast my thundercloud procs or transposing to early in firestarter transpose lines, not getting enough mana ticks. Optimizing sometimes can really suck and its not for everyone. But just remember how far you've come and how much better you are now than you were before. I find that helps ease things a bit. Wish you the best!

BLM main here. I feel your words through to my soul. Do I *ever* feel your words through to my soul. It's like you have to predict where random attacks are gonna land so you can find a safe spot in order to launch everything you've got. Get ice going and start the clock, sling on the DOT, dive into fire phase and become a raging machine of total destruction for 5 seconds before you have to run for your life. Then, you gotta do the whole predict, point, safe spot again.

I think it's harder for people to learn when they don't feel they are safe, and without this person's support group, I'm going to guess that they don't feel safe anymore, and the fear of inconveniencing strangers is just too much for them. I'm guessing what they really need are some friends who want to do the same content they want to do, which, while many people exist, making friends isn't easy for everyone.

Yeah learning from failure is something people need to understand is the expectation and you're not a terrible person for it; in fact you're probably the average FFXIV player. I'm doing a super casual UCOB prog atm with people, literally one raid a week depending on work schedules and we're consistently getting into Nael. I'm playing bard and learning my debuffs will start to drop and my first song falls off around the first neurolink drop with Twintania so I have to be mindful of that and making sure to use the last stacks of pitch perfect before my song finishes. Not only am I keeping track of that, I've also got to count out and kite 5 liquid hells, then make sure to call out in coms to swap with the RDM for generate if I get it. These are all thing's I've learned into the first 45s-60s of the fight, and have adjusted to fine tune over the period of our progression. Did I have it down pat first time around? Absolutely the fuck not; You're going to learn as you die, and as mechanics happen - it's how this game works and how good it is at teaching you. Like we've hit Nael pretty often now and are learning how to position thunders and how to quickly read if she's doing a dynamo into stack ect, sure we're wiping a lot but thats the cost of progress. Moving forward an inch at a time is better then not moving at all.

I hope it will have enough things for me to do as someone who just wants to derp around, but raids are definitely out. And I'm not upset about that - I get bored with all the mechanics where you have to wait around for the boss to do whatever he's going to do or run around everywhere instead of fighting. I just want to get in there and hit stuff or throw colorful magic at stuff. The game does seem oriented toward pushing you into the high-mechanics type of content, though, so I hope the non-raid content is sufficient to keep my interest long term.

I was watching one of my friends' prog groups on his Twitch, which led me to start playing in the first place, and then soon after I finished then-current patch 5.3 their static needed another DPS, so I volunteered. Luckily they had already gotten to the end of the adds phase and the tier had already been unlocked, so they just assigned me the easiest task in Light Rampant and I was able to get in and help the group get to clears, and now I'm a regular part of the static! I never thought I was "good" because I wasn't (and am still not) a "tryhard" but I do good damage and do boss mechanics most of the time, and that's all I really need in FFXIV :)

I think part of what causes this mindset is the way the game is practically terrified of seriously challenging you as a player in all but a few specific pieces of content. It can be incredibly jarring jumping from simple dungeon roulettes to Savage raiding or even just stuff like Bozja. Its easy to feel like you're an utter failure when attempting this harder content because the game basically trains you to think that most problems can be overcome with no more than a couple wipes unless you have party members just literally AFK. Experiencing that throughout all of the MSQ and a ton of side content, I totally see why people immediately become discouraged when they try content thats truly difficult and die 10 pulls in a row. And ofc the social/multiplayer aspect just makes this that much worse because you feel like you're sandbagging the whole group.

What I have found to revitalize from that stupor is when I play a new dungeon and die because of new mechs, I get excited to learn new things and new areas. Have to play with NPC tho because I dont want my experience ruined

It sounds weird, but I just accepted I won´t be as happy and joyful as when I was younger. Sounds sad, but that is what "ignorance is a bliss" means. You have experienced a lot, and took time to pick wich of experiences you liked, now they don't feel as good. You feel sad, because there ain't as much left to explore. I realized while playing WoW, after WoW was no longer a good time, it was a task I had to do daily/weekly. Atm Im doing MSQ, and I already know that when MSQ finishes I will have the endgame to enjoy and the content will be very limited compared to when I started. But I won't chain myself as much as I did in WoW. It is like you "want to like the game", but you are not and it prevents you from trying something else. You would've to take a break on the game, or play casually and accept it. If you want to go hardcore at something, you really must enjoy it at the moment you are doing.

I really hate that our society is so obsessed with youth that people see any rut they get into as being due to age. I had ruts all the time as a younger person. I think everyone does. Sometimes you just lose your focus, lose your way, or lose interest. Some of the sharpest people I've ever met in my life were in their 70s and 80s, and it's disgracefully ableist and shortsighted for someone in their twenties or thirties to blame their temporary shortcomings on age.

The post you are responding to isn't about game performance. It is about that social dynamic that they have lost. Something in their prior group worked for them, and that is gone. Until they re-establish a suitable social situation they are going to keep feeling bad about the game and their experience of it in the harder content. Framing it as a performance issue, where they need to "get good" (again), is just going to make the problem worse for them. I recognise this because the social dynamic of streams I watch for raiding affects how I feel about it. No amount of "you can get good" over comes the crippling anxiety created when people roll through a macro and present an attitude that it is enough to successfully complete the mechanics or give a 10 minute plus explanation of mechanics with an attitude that this is teaching them so the group can do it now. This is because the implication is; that if you cannot do it based on the information you have at hand, you are letting the team down. So every time this happens you feel worse about it, in a repeating cycle. The solution is you don't do it anymore. Then you get the "this thing you are finding really hard, is actually easy so you should just do it" attitudes, and the various other things about how you just need to practice to "get good". All of which fail to recognise the problem is one of expectations around doing the content. Some of these attitudes even reinforce the source of the anxiety (the "it's easy" one in particular). Why do I know? Because I can get so anxious I cannot even watch a stream of a raid.
@ObsidianCrane
@ObsidianCrane 2 года назад
And for clarity: 1) I don't think "Anonymous" has anxiety, that's my problem. 2) I'm incredibly grateful my anxiety is restricted to extreme and up content in FFXIV and competitive aspects of my other hobbies.

there are some bad eggs in this game, they are professionally bad and you cannot say anything to them, or they will react the same way as the llamatodd food buff meme, or say things like "u dOnT pAy mY sUb", they tend to fall through the cracks, but if you play long enough you will encounter them, they are like a monkey at a zoo, and will fling poo at you if you anger them in anyway possible, for example, i was in snowcloak at 3AM on my alt, and this Roegadyn Astrologian wearing that dumb gear that makes you look like a red sharpie the maelstrom wear, causes everyone in the party to wipe three times on Fenrir(last boss in snowcloak), we have gave this person specific instructions on how to avoid getting frozen and hide behind the pillar, but they just wouldn't do it, even on the attempt where we managed to outlast by a hair and kill fenrir, they still wouldnt do the mechanic right, and i made the mistake of giving them advice on how to avoid it, but they reacted in the same way you would expect, and even worse the tank was encouraging his behavior, i was so close to closing my game by the third wipe, so lesson learned no matter how much you think you have good intentions, people like this guy will never get good or take criticism or any self reflection to be had. ( the paladin tank was calling me toxic the whole time for giving advice when we wiped, i said "MAN OVER HERE LOOK FOR THE PILLAR", but i guess some people are pussies and cannot take a second to understand the why of it rather focus on the what aspect)

There is a difference between knowledge, experience, and execution. From the looks of it this guy have sufficient knowledge and experience, I can only suspect it is the execution bit that is problematic, unfortunately accurate and repeatable execution does correlate with ages and skill, practice does help, to a degree, but imo as long as you are good enough to clear in your group it is okay to be ''carried'' a bit in DPS.
@ZechsMerquise73
@ZechsMerquise73 2 года назад
It seems a little dubious to claim that accurate and repeatable execution correlates with skill, considering skill is the accurate and repeatable execution of movements through training. When you look at these studies that correlate age and reaction time, do you ever stop to consider whether their findings could be due to some kind of external factor, such as intelligence cohorting, differences in interest level, physiological problems that are more likely to have occurred the longer a person has lived...? How about the fact that studies which correlate things deal with averages, and not individuals. You can't tell someone how their body will behave at a certain age, because literally nobody knows for any one individual.
@Verpal

@@ZechsMerquise73 Well that's why I specifically said correlation, correlate doesn't mean direct casualty, it could be due to many different factor, I was merely laying down some of the straight forward guesses.

The main point about criticism is that, criticism without explanation of what you did wrong, and what you have to do do fix/improve is just mean and asshole behaviour. If you have the moral high ground to criticise someone, you have the moral duty to offer the solution, otherwise, you're just being a crybaby. And most statics I see on the game just cry to each other and point fingers and no one works towards a solution, that is really demoralizing and depressing. My FC has 5 or 7 statics, and only one of them are made of good players and try to work a solution of every problem of the fight, instead of blaming a player or a low parse in a specific pull

When I was a sprout, I used to AFK a lot in Limsa. Thus my sprout status have gone away, so I get in a trial that I am new in and when I die, people are EXTREMELY toxic towards me. Saying that how I don't know the mechanics or it is the "healer's" fault for them wiping. I just stopped playing trials all together. I have experienced so many toxic statements not just only to me, but to other people. The community tries so hard to report everybody and anybody, It's very disappointing. I stopped playing all together and I think the hype about the community is overrated. It's not real, people can't tolerate a SINGLE wipe. I don't know if it's an " Aether " thing or not.. Since it's more of a " Raiding " server.

The only time I've seen this is in Crystal Tower. People (usually WoW players hitting near the end of their free trial, imo) freak out when there's a wipe or even deaths there. But, at least for Crystal servers, what you're saying doesn't apply anywhere else. I've seen people do content over and over after a wipe until they get it right or the time runs out, without any complaint. Try doing Binding Coils turn 5 with randoms, and you'll some see unbelievable patience.

Let's just say that there's someone i know in game that is a total opposite of what this person is, they will always blame someone else for their deaths or their mistakes and never ever bothered to learn the mechanics, we can go into the same trial, alliance, etc, and do the same things and they will still die multiple times, and all the time they'll be blaming the tank for facing the enemy a certain way, blaming the healer for not healing when he didn't dodge a mechanic and got a buff and died, anyway way this person ended up not playing more than a year and quit the game. to me i felt it's good riddance, because these people will never learn and will never get better at the game for not reflecting on what they are doing.

duty support is slow 30 minute dungeion runs, but the NPC's exposes mechanics. playing warcraft or elder scrolls can help with 14 there all target based which is point and click with the mouse not all games are. any target based game comes with pointless stupid puzzled mechanics on boss fights. ff14 is 10yrs old so there is no guild that will show the ropes or explain on discord, but there is a novice chat in 14. there is no perfect rotation people not suppose to use ACT only cool downs do matter. and most people who love ff14 play DPS, everyone has tank/heal anxiety but in reality every job is a DPS some dps will take damage some dps will heal. its why going tank or heal its best to group with a in game friend or someone irl till you get use to it.

The classes them selves feel like garbage to play. Raids were way less difficult so far in EW as well. Truth is they probably have gotten old, they have more things going on in there life and have less time to invest in the game and was left behind.
