As for myself, I really need a competent, inspiring, enthusiastic professional programmer, but I just don't think it's plausible. 😕 Additionally, I'm going for an auto-scrolling shooter ("schmup"), and I don't think I really want to do a deep, story-based RPG. It just wouldn't be ideal nor aa exciting as what I've cooked up.

@@sungrandstudios It is actually one of the 'series' of RPG maker games which is made by one guy with similar but individually very creative twists. I don't think anyone ever translated any of them but I think some madlads have translated full playthrough of some Japanese vtubers who played those games. Let me see if I can found them EDIT: Found it! There are actually quite a few, but one I like the most is "RPG where the Hero is too weak" (I think the official title TL is just "Weakest RPG" but I'm not sure). A madlad translated a full playthrough of JP Vtuber Inugami Korone in a video titled "Korone Plays the Game Where the Hero is Too Weak". This one is my favorite because unlike the others which are pretty much just very funny and creative parodies, this one is unexpectedly both very fun and has some quite serious and touching twists in the middle and end.

Been using RPG Maker for years now. It's great for people who are just starting out as it lets you make a full game without writing a single line of code. But once you become a more serious creator, you may want to properly learn how to code in the engine and using/making plugins, or just moving to another engine altogether.

Well said. I used RPG Maker 95, then 2000, and around 2002 I moved to Game Maker, after I realized I needed an engine that gave me more creative freedom. The skills you learn from using RPG Maker translate across to other engines and make it much easier to learn other development environments.

Wonderful video. Thank you. I tried to get into game development via various routes over the years, but it was GDevelop that provided me with a breakthrough. It's open source and uses an event system (visual programming) i.e. if this is true > do this. You're still dealing with concepts like variables and expressions, but it's a lot easier than the big well-known engines (though, admittedly, less powerful). Until recently it was a 2D-only engine and you can make anything in it that you can think of. As a graphics and writing guy first, GDevelop has allowed me to take my ideas and begin to turn them into a game, whereas I was hitting a brick wall with other approaches.

Oh RPG Maker, kinda nostalgic as I tried some stuff with XP back when Vampires Dawn was big, or even before that.

Here's an idea: how about a series of RPG Maker tutorial videos? Personally, I've been dreaming of making my own RPG since I was 17. This video really inspired me to try and make the plunge at 40. Btw - I'm having lunch with my parents tomorrow 😇

12:40 I do! Rotating saves are important! It not only somehow prevents from save loss, but also makes you be able to save-backtrack in case the latest save has an outcome you didn't like or so!

Totally! You know how sometimes you get a new party member, then you spend all your money buying them new equipment, only for them to immediately leave your party forever? Yeah...

The models and blood remind me of Harvester. Also you should review Vanillaware characters! (Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, etc.)

I started on rpg maker 2000 ages ago. Recently got myself a great PC and bought all the versions on steams summer sale and it was all very affordable. I love them all and I also recommend getting familiar with all of them to see how they evolved to this point and appreciate what we have now

That's great. I used so much 2000 when it was new. The character creation system in the new versions looks incredible.

@sungrandstudios it's super cool and kinda surreal to have a developer like yourself mention a gem like rpg maker. I hope your video creates more interest for individuals who just even want to get a start in a hobby or a career

I started with RPG maker 2000 when I was 12. I'm in my 30s now, and you're absolutely right with what you're saying about the important skills you can gather from RPG makers. From folder structuring, to dialoge writing, to level design, to battle balance and so much more. One thing I want to point out is the variable and switch understanding as a dumbass kid I made. It was just like finding real magic or looking behind the Matrix and I was so excited calling my friend with the discovery I made 😂

I love RPG Maker, it's a great way of making games. However, I might recommend starting with something like Twine, and JS.

RPG Maker XP has a very specific use case nowadays and it is very "essential" for it. If you know, you know.

RPG Maker could be for some people the first step into game development, but it's not for everybody .... I had over 13 years ago a RPG Maker version on my first pc, it was not inspiring for me to even start to make something. Some people like me just can't make 2d games.
