"The worst thing about playing MGS4 is the graphics" - a person who clearly was not there and did not shit his pants by how amazing these graphics were at the time.
I was not here for this time I grew up around mw2 however even I can say that these graphics look fantastic for the time and even today they look flat out good
Man I remember when this game came out and how utterly blown away I was at the graphics and the gameplay. I still get that feeling every time I see MGS4 and GTA4. I hope this RPS3 can somehow handle MGO or better yet the Peace Walker Remaster Coop. That shit was the peak
I have good news for you: both MGO2 and Peace Walker co-op are already playable on RPCS3! Check out these links if you wanna try em: MGSPW Co op: www.reddit.com/r/rpcs3/comments/ts83hd/regarding_online_play_for_mgs_peace_walker_hd/ipnfvs4/ MGO2: mgo2pc.com/
MGS2's Animations and Graphics already blew me away as a kid. Back when you thought graphics cant become better than that, then MGS3 and 4 came. Good times.
Don't forget Metal Gear Online! ❤ By the way while MGS4 primarily was aiming for 30 FPS (and failing) it actually had an adaptive frame cap and would/could sometimes hit 50 or 60 FPS. Two good examples being the first floor of the building you are meant to meet Rat Patrol in (pre encounter) and the NVG function on the Solid Eye.
Yeah I noticed that it could go up to 60 some times, but it was soooo rare haha. Also, I want to make a video about MGO2 as well, but probably won't happen before the Master Collection comes out.
@@MaxNarutoUzumakiVerstappen An easy way to achieve 60fps is to turn on thermal vision, i don't know whether the draw distance is reduced or if there's more culling but it works depending on where you are, looking at the ground helps.
Hey, great video! Just one correction: MGS4 was not locked to 30FPS on PS3. The game has an actual FPS cap of 60 and runs with double buffer v-sync. Of course, since the game can basically never reach 60, the double buffer v-sync is always in effect and attempts to lock to 30FPS instead. However, there are a rare few spots in the game where, if you go prone and point the camera directly at the floor, you can actually see the game run at 60FPS. Edit: Ah, it looks like someone already posted this information in the comments, sorry about that.
Also night vision lol. I played through a lot of act 1 with night vision on because it simplified the rendering and was able to hit 40-60fps a lot more consistently
This is awesome!! Thank you for your time in featuring a link to detailed system performance ratings. And such. I wonder if konami ever do Port it, if they’re gonna do better than what we got on Xbox and PC hd collections… cause they were kinda half assed & no pressure sensitive rework so it was a little bit annoying at times, then what makes my mind just straight up baffled. Is that the Nintendo 3DS got the definitive edition with the better controls and the crouch walking from peace walker, lol. It makes no sense. It could barely run it.
Played this game a couple months ago and the only problems I've encountered are some little performance drops when you enter an area where alot is going on f.e the motorbike gameplay with Big Moma. Otherwise the game is running perfectly most of the time from the beginning to the end on 60 FPS and even 4K if your pc can handle it
i just played a few monts ago on both, the retail RPCS3 Build and on the Illusion Build just for MGS 4. Both run very well but since the new big performance update that came just while I was playing the game, the retail Build is definitely the best for me! ran almost constant on 60 FPS with no prerendering caches in the middle of the game (like in illusion for example) the game precaches everything at gamestart (takes up to 30 Minutes for me) and than everything runs at least it does with every patch from the wiki enabled

When playing on RPCS3, did you play with the disc or ROM? A few months back I bought the PS3 disc and was going to play it but didn't for some reason. Either it wasn't possible or was going to be a major pain
Nice vid man ive always wanted to try MGS franchise im a Sam Fischer fan but never gave a chance to Snake, and i dont wanna just go straight to MGS5 whithout knowing the origins, be starting with the first 1 than ill certainly come back here for MGS4 run
great video, though it could've come out before my recently finished playthrough 😅 The game ran very well on my r5 3600, with some stuttering and fps drops in some codec calls and the eastern europe missions, but overral it's pretty playable. We'll see if we ever get a native PC version, or a port at least...
@@DanielSlva Yes, you just need to use the recommended settings, maybe modify them a bit according to your PC, but the game can be finished. Just a few crashes and fps slowdowns here and there but it playable.
@@komugi0221 Oh good to know! Thanks for the reply! I've been wanting to play this game again ever since my PS3 died in 2015. Now I can finally play it!
Seeing as emulation allows me to use the pressure sensitive buttons on my PS3 controller and it's looking like the 'master collection' is not going to allow this, I'm glad I have this option.
that if it has original disk with ISO no chance they are badly configured if it has regional dispae then yes it has chances to do Look here people complain I can't play it black screens game crashes and so on I even experienced the effect as if you remove the risk from the console while it is running it shows in the top left a disk with a question mark above if you have about the original is totally different then it might work If it's the emulator it can take over the original disc but as for what virtual you can forget it's not well configured it's not well copied from the original discs and that's why it doesn't work when an emulator hangs is proof that there is no data to read further and then it stops
MGS4 was developed to fit perfectly to the PS3 hardware architecture, thats what makes it so hard to emulate. It's like trying to run iOS on a random Android phone
A stunning video, i can say. Everything explained well, not a single detail missed. I'll save it for the future. The best tutorial for playing MGS4 with RPCS3 so far! Thanks! 💜
well, there's the rather big detail missing on how to (legally) get the game files onto your PC in the first place....? I mean, I assume it involves actually owning a physical PS3....
So let me clarify some stuff about mgs4 porting. There are 2 major situations here, the first is the licensing with ipod and songs and voice actors. The 2nd obstacle is the system calls the game uses in relation to the cell processor and due to items like the ipod, the source code would have to be modified.
If they are porting the source code to other systems they can easily go and replace the ipod model with a more generic design and tweak any details regarding that. Now, the voice actors there's no way to go around it, just pay them for whatever they deserve. Then again, this is Konami we are talking about, and they don't care about their games but only making money and pachinko machines. Like people is even surprised about it.
MGS4 wasn't capped at 30fps at all. In fact, it ran at an unlocked framerate, and it was extremely inconsistent. Game run mostly at 30fps (with some heavy dips here and there), but some parts of the game could actually run above that and even at 60, mainly when you equipped your solid eye in night mode. But anyway the point is, the framerate wasn't capped at all. Nice video anyway, I hope we can see MGS4 included in Master Collection vol. 2, even though it would require an enourmous amount of work, and we all know today's Konami.
If Master Collection Vol.2 comes with MGS4, there’ll be no point of certain easter eggs that mentions PS1 or PS3. And they need to rewrite PS1 emulator too.
Regarding pressure sensitive buttons - I highly recommend simply swapping L1 with L2 and R1 with R2 button bindings in the controller menu. This doesn't affect the whole control scheme too radically and it actually makes the control scheme more akin to modern shooters with L2 aiming for and R2 for firing.
I would love to replay it, but now I’m 43 with two young kids and I don’t have the time for the long cutscenes… and I don’t want to skip them. That’s a sacrilege.
Using different settings than yours I can get 25-60 mostly 40 fps on a pretty weak laptop, I think the current version of rpcs3 is much better than it used to be, but there is no universal setting configuration for everyone, so everyone need to experiment with it, my laptop is i5 1137g, 20gb ram, mx 350 gpu the laptop is heavily tweaked though
If mgs4 comes out in a master collection, and assuming konami does a good job (lol), this video could become obsolete. I always appreciate these however, since it seems like there are always pros and cons, like with the previously covered MGS2, which was also already on PC
If it happens I'll make a new updated video for MGS4 then. Just like I'll do for MGS1, 2 and 3 when Vol. 1 comes out. But I suspect that emulation will continue to be the best option...
By the time we get 4 (if ever), of course this video will be obsolete, it will have been years. There will have been huge advances in PS3 emulation with new guides and configs. But emulation itself will never be obsolete.
FPS in the game was never locked. In some closed areas like in Shadow Moses the fps could reach almost 60fps or 60 fps. The thing is that the game did run very poorly.
"You Can Play MGS4 on PC Right Now At 4K 60 FPS! (2023)" Me: *!* "If you have a good pc" Me: UUUUUUUUUAGGGGHHHHHHHHH Dun Dun Dun Dun, Dun Dun Dun _-=Game Over=-_
Does using an ssd on rcps3 make the game load faster than it did on console? Due to it I couldn't stand playing the game again after the first playthrough, game literally had 3+ hours of loading and I can't sit through that again XD.
After 3 days of trying to make this work i gave up , it crashes alot , even when i downloaded the canary patch , and the 2.0 version and changing the setting by copying others and my own try and error .. it was unplayable either the game crash or the sound dissappear or the game stutter ..
I know this video is 4 months old now, but all the recommended settings did was make the performance worse. I tried various combinations, trying one at a time, and I just went back to default plus the recommended settings for MGS4 on the wiki and it runs better. The settings that didn't worsen the performance only seemed to cause some audio issues without actually improving the performance.
Hey Ocelot, I've seen most of your videos about MGS emulations in the past and I was wondering...Does the game run smoothly at 1080p or even the original resolution? I don't have a problem with low resolutions and bad graphics as long as the game is playable. I remember trying to play it half a year ago and it had some 1 hours long load times and 40 fps max or something. How is the emulation of MGS4 in general? Apart from 4K resolutions
As a rule of thumb, if a game is running fine on 4K, then it will run extra fine at 1080p or lower. Though if it will run well on your PC, that depends on your CPU.
Even on a decent rig constant 60 fps is impossible but its very close i will try to help coz i was dying to play this game but i couldn't run it despite have a decent rig ryzen 7 5700x3d and 4070 super. But the steps that helped and improved the game for me are updating my game from version 1.0 to 2.0 , it doesnt matter which version u use , people say usa version is stable which is something like bl3091 but i dnt have this version and i dont have a single crash till my 3rd act. So after updating game version use canary patches from msg4 rpcs wiki page.( Assuming you know how to copy paste those patches into your game patch folder) and check crash fix , fps unlock , one more thing make sure u are using latest rpcs 3 version with latest firmware i.e 4.91 and make sure your cellspur version in manage game patches ( right clicking on mgs v and going into manage game patches) corresponds to your firmwarw version. Another thing using accurate and relaxed sometimes cause audio issues in cpu settings, i have witnessed this so using approximate setting eliminates the audio bug. Hope these steps help and i have uploaded the game on my recent stream so u guys can see the graphics and performance.
Moving to Japan in October, cannot wait to buy a PS3 in Akihabara (probably the last place on Earth where you can still get a genuine DualShock 3...) and play this gem again.
@@RC--ji2ov that's what I was thinking also, I guess it was a just simple setting for me to adjust. I will say though, at one point I was using the custom build of rpcs3 and it still had the same issue, so who knows lol
@@blastprocessing1 Then you should be able to play it just fine. Make sure you have that patch enabled and try changing the thread scheduler setting on the cpu tab.

should i play the regular MGS4 or MGS4: guns of the patriots or mgs4: guns of the patriots 25th anniversary edition? i just wanna know what 2.0 update did he mean.
I'm so confused what I'm doing wrong because I have a 12th gen i7 and a 3080 but my game alway fluctuates between 60 and 30 and randomly freezes all the time...
Do you have any idea if r7 5800x3d is better than the 5800x for emulating this game? i dont know what to go for, if the extra cache is gonna do anything for the game or the clock speed is more important.
I believe the v-cache doesn't do anything for RPCS3, unfortunately. But for PC games in general it makes a huge difference, so it might make sense to get 5800X3D because of that.
Turned it off when he said “you’ll choke everyone out that you grab, but that’s not a big deal” when earlier in the video he says a shadow having a pixelated edge is one of the emulations “main problems”. The information sprinkled between the bad takes was decent(ish) though, but man… thinking Cqc is just fluff in a mgs title is wild to me.
Has anyone encountered an issue when trying to load up MGS4 and have encounted a black screen? If I remember correctly, there was an installation screen when you load up the game but it doesn't even make it to that, literally just a black screen. Are there any solutions to this issue? I really want to play this game again so damn badly!
MGS4 wasn't capped at 30 but the times it was visibly above 30 weren't frequent and were hard to detect, except for the moments where it ran super smooth like when you went into first person facing a wall.
The game was not capped at 30 frames. The game was actually at a variable framerate. You could often reach 60 fps in certain areas in the game. This makes it much easier to reach higher framerates when emulating the game.
when you started the video I was also amazed what happened they carried it on the computer but in fact it is an emulator there is a big difference that took me a game on the computer or you install a game on the computer and then play it I think that they also made it for the computer but in fact you present it the PlayStation 3 emulator that doesn't work, at least it doesn't work for me and many complain about that if you go and look for game compatibility you will see that others also complain about this game at very few people do it, I'm surprised that with you it works because it freezes at the introduction image after he arrives with the car and jumps out of the car then it freezes and nothing can be done without overloading the emulator without overloading the computer and not it can be played that's why I was impressed when you said that directly in the computer directly in the computer You can play the whole range of Assassin's Creed up to brotherhood it also exists in the PlayStation 3 and in the computer to install it natively as VLC Player is installed is a great difference between being installed in the computer on the Hard drive and playing in an emulator installed on the computer just like the Blue stick emulator for Android and just as well there is Android installed in the computer that's why you learn to make Good the difference when you present these things that some they fail to understand What does it mean directly in the computer it gives you as I said directly in the computer exactly how vrc player VLC Player is installed directly in the computer It can also be installed on Android and Linu and more devices but it is a program that installs directly in the respective program in Windows Linux Android exists for several platforms therefore these differences must be well taken into account played on an emulator or installed in the computer directly
I have a question, I have pretty similar specs to yours (Ryzen 5 3600 / RTX 2060), I wanted to know if your specs could get you all the way to the end of the game and if this game has segments that are very hard to emulate like the end part of MGS3 or if it's more consistent overall Thanks for the video, very informative ❤
*mgs4 is 1080p at a constant 55fps on ps3.* what you are showing is NOT 4k, and it isn't a constant 60fps either. It's still 1080p at 55fps. Mgs4 is probably the best one overall, once you get passed the "old man and linear level" thing. It really is the best game in the series to play right after mgs1. Why? Because mgs2 and mgs3 are kind of lame. Mgs5 is decent but has a few huge flaws. Maybe the full remake of mgs3 will change how I feel about that game. Which then hopefully leads to a remake of mgs1 that isn't twin snakes. Which then finally remakes the original idea for mgs rising with either raiden or cyborg ninja. Honestly a mgs1 remake with cyborg ninja gameplay that is like what the original idea for mgs rising was would be great. Revengeance is lame. It's weird how there's so much of the game in a poop filled sewer. Locomotion is way too automated. Beyond that, it's a decent boss fight game. Really annoying how raiden wears heels, it's his only true character flaw. Btw I can tell you're not a real fan of mgs4, those graphics are decent and for their time were seen as incredible beyond some pixelated textures. The espionage 60s noir spy level was awesome. So was revisiting shadow Moses.
Lets hope you see this. Seems like you planned on fans of mgs4 getting excited if they were one of very few who strictly gamed on a pc with the mouse and inferior keyboard
i copied all these settings and the game crashes on the first cut scene can't skip it either just gets stuck my pc setup is a 10700k @4.9Ghz 32GB memory @ 3600Mhz nvidia rtx 3070 founders edition just overclocked a tiny bit on the gpu any help would be greatly appreciated
I still find it insane that while yes mgs4 is technically playable, you need an incredibly good cpu to actually run it better than an actual ps3. Getting close but it's still "unplayable" for the majority of people who try to play it.
