That's pretty amazing. I've been in the industry for 45 years, and I've never seen anybody troubleshoot a shorted SMT capacitor just by visual means. Troubleshooting these capacitors are almost impossible when you have multiple ones all in parallel with each other, so this is a great way to help isolate a defective capacitor. I am looking forward to trying out this technique at work tonight. Thanks for the video and teaching this old dog a new trick.

You never did tell us what you looked for to identify it as being bad. It's good that you are able to back up your talk, but it would be nice if you told us what it is that you saw in that resistor that made you think it was bad. thanks.

you could see that the capacitor was cracked most likely from the heat generated when it shorted

I did not see it at first, either -- but if you look closely, there is a small reflection/line across the top, indicating a slight bulge (enlargement) of the case. It is NOT easy to see, but it is there. Strong magnification seems necessary.

You are a master of your craft. Thank you for sharing it to us. I hope I get it right. To spot a defective capacitor, you need to see any discoloration on the capacitor, and it is slightly bloated.

One way I find shorted capacitor is by injecting a little voltage into the short and see which capacitor changes temperature. Do not inject voltage higher than 2 volts for risk of damaging IC. You need to make a device with variable current because not enough current and the voltage will just be bogged down by the shorted capacitor

How do you know what value to replace with when there are no makings? Choose y colour and size? Use flux and or a small soldering iron and they will come out easier.

Either look for schematics for the board, buy a capacitor/resistor set with values as close or equal to the replacement, or buy a donor board.

You need to understand electronics better. Capacitors are needed to dampen short sharp peaks of power drain on the line, for example by a chip, or by induction from the outside world. For example if you switch on a coffee machine it will send out an electromagnetic wave which can induce voltage into any wire. Capacitors guard against failing the logic in such cases. Without the caps it looks like working perfectly, but it just works statistically over a short time. You can get malfunctions in the long run.

@juggalo4life12113
@juggalo4life12113 Год назад
Yes it will run but obviously whatever you took the capacitors out of is not going to work for example a USB port or other sensor capacitors serve a couple purposes on pcbs to change the voltage current to low or high to tell the microcontroller what state it needs to be in or simply to reduce the power to an item because it doesn't need the amount being sent to it to function

nope you need specific kind of water thats not either too combustible or conductive sine youre working on a short imagine poruring normal water on the board and it sipped inside through contact holes/bridge in the PCB( since most of them arent made of hydrophobic materials...) and that caused a contact on both positive and negative rails that would be disastrous , ive tried it once so it was based on epxerience even when i heated the board that water was just evaporated and spread inside the pcb and later caused corotion from the inside under the SIO chip

Well if look carefully you can see something is not right with the capacitor, so yes there are going to be a very small amount of user(s) that can spot this with naked eye. I think I have a strange skill with a pair of pliers. These strange skill don't come naturally. You just keep doing it over & over, then it becomes natural over time. So at some point he will spot faulty capacitors even quicker & faster than before.. So yes I do believe the OP. Look careful you can see the fault. Not easy to spot, but it' is there. The problem is, will the next shorted capacitor show the same fault or will it look different.

Hellow JBV i have a short in a vrm graphic card line 12v and i have not a single shorted mosfet im sure of that cause if i measure from the source of the high mosfet to ground i have 13 ohms exactly the same resistence of the gpu chip, but if i measure the positive drain of the high mosfet with ground i have 2.7 ohms so no mosfet short if not i get it the same value in the source of that mosfets to and the gate of all mosfets are not shorted to, my conclusion is i have a short from some capacitor but in this line i have more than 10 capacitors i try use your way the vision power and i spot one but whit my phone camera cause i dont have a microscope yet, cold i sent you a picture for you opinion?? and if i can you give me your email or skype?? thanks Bró im from Brasil.
