Aris' entire bit of saying "Zazmasol" instead of "Zasalamel" came from a beef some guy had trying to money match one of his friends at a SC3 tournament. Beef sets don't have to be these epic moments in FGC history. They can just be a good laugh with your friends. There's real value in that.

Speaking of online beef not really working, it just reminds me of this guy in a server I was in who would just try and start beef constantly. In channels and stuff he would say wildly controversial stuff, comment on people posting replays saying they sucked and would post his replays as "proof", constantly ask for money matches in any game. It wasn't a rivalry, it was fuckin annoying lol His reasoning was that he wants the FGC to stop being "soft" and go back to the SF4 days when there was "constant beef and storylines." His first game? SFV in 2019. Whenever we would play in VC? Dead silent, not a single word of trash talk uttered from him.

sanford vs aquasilk and then the pr rog call out and then the justin wong call out at nec 👍👍and a key part of that was lee chung and arturo on commentary (whatever people think of the latter). like... there's all different ingredients that can go into the secret sauce, but when it's right... 👌obviously rog, sanford, and jwonggg were high level sf4 players, so it maybe doesn't apply. and to be respectful of aquasilk, he was certainly a better player than i'll ever be. so, regardless, imo, it's still a good example of a magic moment. people who aren't moved by that kind of stuff, like that's fine for them if they enjoy that super serious side of things, but i can't relate at all. i really enjoy the magic of those sincere hearts-on-the-sleeve grudge matches. skill doesn't necessarily matter imo, emotion matters, and emotion makes memories.

Fchamp vs KBR in UMVC3 is always gonna be a favorite beef set of mine, especially if you include the actual bracket match the next day lol. Although I'm kind of glad beef sets like that arent that common. I feel like in order to have a beef like that you need a "heel" as one of the two parties involved. One of them is going to be a lil shithead instigator. At the highest level it can be funny and entertaining, but if some dude was at my locals acting like Fchamp I'd think they were corny and a manchild

RIP Vs Ryan Heart. They started talkin smack in the commentators table about thier own tourney results. RIP tries to trash talk saying Ryan ran to the 2d games casue he couldn't handle tekken, Ryan Heart absolutely wrecked him with saying the classic "I've won more tournaments than you've ever entered!". Ft10 happens, Ryan with Kaz. RIP with Law. Ryan heart takes it 10-3. Establishing his dominance. Great build up and great set.

I think of it like real fighters: We can see the best of the best duke it out for supremacy, and that is definitely entertaining, but there is hype when there's actual drama between competitors. On the MMA side, I recall Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington being a major one that got people hyped to watch due to the drama alone, despite both fighters not being a champion. LTG vs Viscant is an FGC one. Hell, a decent one from pro wrestling was Kenny Omega vs. Austin Creed, who faced off in SF5.

There was a match either one of the combo breaker or ufgt in umvc between unknown and another guy. I remember they money matched earlier in the tournament and it was pretty testy, and then they actually made it to each other in the bracket in the main tournament and they almost came to blows.

Some of my favorite beef sets in recent memory revolve around Punk looool. Punk vs EU in sfv. It peaked at red bull kumite when he played crimson for the 3rd(?) time with it all on the line. Punk vs hotashi after a can opener iirc. That shit was spontaneous but very intense at the same time. Both of those were top level sets tho across two different games (sfv and strive) so i will offer another punk set in another game thats a little lower level. The Punk vs Koustics saga in dbfz loool. I dont even remember how it started at this point but they played SEVERAL mms for some real money. I think theres still a good amount of "beef" sets popping up if you know where to look or who to follow. I just think people arent actually tapped in like that, or they want to see it all the time and i dont think thats healthy or realistic.

There's some GG bias, but Ogawa vs Machabo is also a clasic. A story that was frame as someone who plays the game out of love vs someone who found no happiness. Idk the full history if Machabo outside of his GG doc. It does suck that a player that's regarded as one of the best in their game doesn't enjoy it anymore. Of course I’m not advocating for people to just start fighting each other or hating everybody for no reason, but I don’t understand why the fgc is in a friendship era. I’ve gotten so much shit for not automatically being cool with everybody that ever played tekken, like I’ve never talked to this dude from Texas why am I supposed to fuck with him? Cuz he played in a couple online tournaments? It’s really not that deep, but I feel like the pandemic really damaged the fgc badly. The divide between the competitive and casual scene is ever growing and once we start looking at pro players like celebrities instead of competition, it’s a wrap for the fgc

I think it was called Barfights where Cross Counter tried to manufacture this artificially and it just didn't work. I don't think the beef set has to be high level, but I think the beef has to at least be real and more often than not the level of play has to be good. Like Pokchop vs RealLaw in Tekken wasn't high level but it was exceptionally entertaining because Pokchop is sincerely antagonizing RealLaw and RealLaw is sincerely bothered by it. I couldn't watch a ton of sets like that though. FChamp was so disrespectful to KBR that it made you want to see him lose, Punk and Xiaohai in SFL recently had a sincere shit talk moment and it was great. But when it's blatantly obvious that it's *trying* to be entertaining, it just comes off corny.

had the same discussion on Ernesto's channel. the problem is people are conflating competitive rivalries with what i guess we can call "hood shit"? i dont know anything about tekken but i know all about that pokchop/reallaw set. hysterical, 5 stars, will watch again. but is this the kind of thing we want to promote? is this what we want people to see?
@doogies
@doogies 4 месяца назад
I agree about the conflating. It's prob hard to separate for a lot of people. Again, some of these are extremely relatable and funny, nothing wrong with being promoted. I didnt go back too far but there is a generation that got into these games on the back of mvc2 money matches etc

@@tkmx4126 the more i think about the topic the harder it is to navigate. this genre stretches back over 30 years and that legacy/heritage should be preserved. but after re-watching some of the old stuff(mvc2/3, sf4, etc) i think some of it needs to be left behind. i understand that some people were pulled in because of this sort of thing. but take a second and think, how long ago was mvc2/3 sf3/4, st etc? as a community we should be a lot more mature then that since we have a lot of 30 40s something within our ranks. the topic is to complicated to touch in a yt comments section. this is 3 hour podcast material.
