dude I still think about the ghandi match all the time, love you bringing this one back up. honestly always thought this match should be as remembered and iconic as some of the great moments. it's pure textbook teaching material when it come to all those old age questions of how do I actually learn to win at fighting games, how do I actually play these games without just bashing my face on the buttons and hoping for the best. If i'm ever getting randomed out in a game where someone is being completely unpredictable and not "playing by the rules" so to speak, I always pause myself for a moment, slow myself down and say to myself "don't get ghandi'd" and wait for them to hang themselves.
I love the conversation analogy. Talking with your fist is something Ryu would say. When the people who are good at conversation are fighting the people who have a lot to say he word random comes up a lot of the time. It's hard to account for all the things someone could say 😂
There reaches a point where you're trying to operate on so many levels, you get tripped by level 1 tech because you aren't thinking about it anymore. You can only process so much of what's happening at any given moment. Knowing when it's time to dial it down and simplify things is a good skill to have not just for fgs but life in general.
Really like this vid, like how you're looking at the Ghandi v. FSP match in a different light than Core-A Gaming did. Also, really liked the conversation metaphor cause it easily relates to both players, both aren't willing to have a conversation and commit to their gameplans, just one didn't realize all he to do was be patient and win. This stuff is great life advice as well. You reminded me of something my karate teacher said in passing once. "You should have the confidence to throw whatever attack you'll do, but you should have the knowledge to adapt whenever you need to."
Videos like this are one of the reasons I love fighting games. There are things that would be considered, "The right thing to do", in most situations but in a different context are the wrong thing to do. Even a seasoned veteran of a game that has studied so many advanced techniques and set ups might actually need to throw that all away in a given moment to approach the match up with a much simpler strategy if the right opportunity presents itself. For me some of the most satisfying moments playing fighting games have been moments when I think I need to move one way, only to realize what is actually happening in realtime and correctly adjust for the moment.
The way we've all been there man. Sometimes you just walk into a tournament, or set, or even just a friendly match, a little too confident and have to deal with the ramifications of whatever you did to make you that confident not being enough that day. It's fucking tough having part of your view of yourself shatter in the relatively small scale stage of a video game, but holy hel does it hurt, man.

It is a conversation though, and that's a two way street. Your responses have an influence on your opponent's next decision. They're taking it into account if they're paying attention to you.
@BigDaddyWes in a fighting game for sure, it does apply to irl but there's only so much you can do to influence someone else's actions. And I think that's just what is, influence, which I don't think equates to control
TLC at Mania X7 is a great example of how this over the top violence and carnage truly can be crafted into a work of art. One of the wrestling matches I show people when trying to make them understand why I love wrestling so much.
Some of my favorite moments playing fighting games is when it clicks mid-match that I'm supposed to "do less", and then it works. The clock is running, I just have to use it. It's really easy to forget.
Sometimes i pull up this match to just run game 1 round one opening over and over again. That ryu opening series is iconic, and i mean that in the purest sense of the word lmao

Serendipitous that I just now saw this. I opened myself up to some real humiliation by not respecting and responding to my opponent BECAUSE “they were mashing”. Lost a messy 2-3, adjusted to win a very clean 3-0, then when they adjusted to my play I crumbled and lost bad because “they can’t actually adjust to my play”. Meanwhile they won a back-and-forth match, learned something about how to pressure me effectively, and came out with a feeling of satisfaction, while in that moment I felt outright humiliated. Thanks a ton for your advice on this, it’s helping me laugh it off and learn. also that TLC match kicks ass, it’s probably my favorite one until Shield vs. Wyatts 1

i struggle with this shit all the time, the "i'm better than this guy" mentality is automatic, and it takes a lot of effort to just fuckin pay attention to the match instead of getting lost in your head
I find that sometimes the highest tier of players are actually the opposite of entertaining or interesting. After all, they aren’t playing to be interesting or entertaining, they’re playing to win. Great video
This has been the exact journey I've been on as I've picked up Zangief in SF6 recently. I started in gold 1 and I'm currently platinum 4. And outside of experimenting on a few max damage punishes, my game plan has been very simple and very successful.
The reason I grew to love fighting games is because I realize the group was bonding over them. Playing together and showcasing personality traits that aren't as obvious outside of the scenario. It's also why I fell out of the fgc, it seems since the pandemic everyone just wants to brute force their gameplan Instantly instead of learning the opponent. Shits sad
How dare u call me out like this Majin xD I've def had a shift recently to being better about seeing what my opponents do and not thinking about what they "should do". I appreciate this video cause it's only telling me I'm going the right way. But I def felt my man in this video.
This is also good advice even if you're not good. I'm by no means a good players but often when I'm fighting someone around my level or often even better and they know the counterplay to all of my shit, just hanging back and giving them a chance to fuck up in a way I could punish won me so many matches (this works especially well with smash style games)
This reminds me of me realizing all you explained. I competed for a while in an online SC6 League and we had a Siegfried player who was say, same level as Gandhi here. Played him in pools and casuals quite often (dude's in there for the love of SC) and while his Sieggy isn't the level of one of the stronger players of the same character, he is able to catch me (and others sometimes) and score a win using a basic gameplan of poke, dropkick, running attack. No combos, no fancy stuff, just swing and hit. He'll catch us eating too much hits, or getting rung out with that big sword sweep. It was a learning moment for me and even I figured out that I need to overthink my matches way less. And "having a punish YOU can do" is way better than "knowing you have a punish but can't consistently do on that situation" indeed. Also heyooo I'm also kinda like that on wrestling lol. I will enjoy main events, but say in NJPW I have more fun watching old Shibata and Ishii/Jeff Cobb vs Shingo in the midcard for the Never belt over the big big matches lol. And also yeah, WM X7 is GOATED
this video came at the perfect timing for me. been mallllding on tekken ranked past couple seshs cus ill fall for some dumb options & ill lose to it R1, fuck up my first punish attempt R2, and check out. havin me wishin i could put my opponent thru a table a la Dudley Boyz (in-game, of course). its like, that feeling of defeat i feel makes me forget to jus do the next level up option. ill watch replays n be like "oh, if i jus crouch then rising 2 ima be fine" or sum similar thats so obvious but i jus couldnt see bc tilting would jus not let me 😂
Things happen fast in fighting games. Sometimes we can't keep up. Finding your way there after the fact is still good for the future. Good on you. Also important to keep in mind: tilting is okay sometimes; it happens! It's not ideal, but as long as you can recover and learn later after you've calmed down, it's not such a big deal. And hopefully that cycle happens enough times that your tilt-to-learn cycle gets shorter and shorter until you're actually able to do it within the course of a set, or even during the round itself, instead of having to wait until the post-game analysis to get it together.
think ive seen someone post this match before and i love it the commentary for it is amazing im glad i dont have to be taught the gandhi lesson in a tourney because my friends fg skill level varies anyway, gotta be ready for some dumb strategies
You can't mixup someone who isn't playing the same game as you, they believe deep in their heart that every single wakeup should be mash jab and you must simply accept that. Fight the opponent in front of you not the one in your mind.
people should watch ghandi's match against a dan in the next round of dreamhack to see all majin's points codified in a playstyle, especially the wait and let your opponent do something unsafe attitude.
I got a buddy who is pretty good, but ends up overcomplicating their game plan and gets blown up by "random" play. I'm a scrub too, but my philosophy is that if you don't see it, they don't have it. Why are you shimmying if they haven't teched? Why did you stop jumping if they haven't been on their AA game? Layer 1 goes a loooong way, even at higher intermediate play.
If there’s one good thing about grinding netplay, it’s that these sorts of players are unavoidable. You have to learn how to play safe and punish whatever they throw out.

this clip is classic. but it really showcases why i hated sf4. matches like this drag because you cant really force anything and you end up just losing your patience. staying cool and leaning on your fundamentals? absolutely. bait, punish, anti air, space, but in the process of grinding them out u can feel your life force draining. thats why that first 2 3 months of sf5 was so hilarious. someone like gandhi would mash a dp and then eat a 20%-30% meterless punish. as they panic now here comes a throw or a meatie and 15 seconds later your on to your next match.
You liked the extreme side of wrestling but you don't mention the land of extreme, the hardcore heaven: ECW. You don't like extreme, you like attitude era its not the same thing. Joking aside, for me ECW was the best of wrestling and hardcore heaven '97 is my favorite wrestling show of all time. Most of the best wrestlers came from there, like the Dudley's you love so much.
