Inspired by the video "You can't play 2 notes at the same time", where the beginning multiphonic part of this recording was transcribed. I highly suggest you check it out! Here's the link:
Full Recording: • James Morrison:Trumpet...
Multiphonic Transcription: • You can't play 2 notes...
This was very interesting to transcribe, although it surprisingly only took a day. James Morrison is a truly skilled musician, and this shows just how creative he can be. The notes which use a trigger are notated, mostly to see how much he has to work with it. The trumpet runs are most definitely not accurate, but each top note is correct, and the rhythms notated are right. I hope you enjoy this transcription!

believe it or not, I once played with a guy called Fabio Morgera, from Italy, who won a Grammy and is in the Jazz Encyclopedia by Leonard Feather, the baddest mofo ever on a trumpet, and he had a hand amputated in his youth. You had to see it to believe it! Look him up, definitely worth it.

He is just the sickest to have lived It's so funny, like he gets pushed aside as almost a "magic trick" type musician but there is absolutely nobody that can touch this guy in terms of style and prowess on the trombone. Not a single person. Maybe Trombone Shorty in his prime. I still prefer James Morrison to Wycliffe, Watrous, Hampton, JJ, Rosolino, all the greats.

@@Sorro421 I can't do it consistently, but at the most, i can maybe play 5th position notes in first after an hour of trying. I usually need a reference pitch as well. @plunger9165 2 года назад
Wdym, he is using the harmonic series and the F trigger. Are you a bone player?
@paddotk
@paddotk 2 года назад
@@plunger9165 No, I only play with my own bone at night. But in all seriousness, I don't play it or know much about it. But as far as I know, you need to move the pipe and/or push buttons to get different notes, right?
@plunger9165
@plunger9165 2 года назад
@@paddotk So there are 7 fundamental positions on a standard Bb tenor trombone. 1st position is the slide all the way in (I am sure you already now this). The harmonic series are the notes you can play wall in first position (you can play all octaves of Bb in 1st position). So Pedal Bb, Bb, F, Bb, D, F, (flat) Ab, Bb, C, D, E (kind of), F and so on. So you can see as you go higher, the notes tend to get closer together so in the low register you can only go from Bb to F but in the high register you can go from C to D which therefore allows you to have an extend range compared to the low register which is why for Most of this solo he plays in the upper register. Now the trigger is called and F attachment because it increases the total tubing of the trombone by 6 positions which will put it in the key of F (so this will make it fundamentally lower in pitch) and so basically if you engage the trigger, because an F is a fifth from Bb, all the harmonic series I said above will be shifted up a fifth and then down an octave. Triggers are usually there to help out in the low range but can also be utilised in the high range as Morrison displays here, for example you can do a Bb above the staff in first position but you can’t do the C above it (middle C) but if you engage the trigger you can play that C because it will put it technically in sixth position and because you can play that lower C in 6h position you can now play the higher C (middle C). These are just the basics of how the trombone works and the science of its tubing. If you have any questions let me know (:
@plunger9165
@plunger9165 2 года назад
James is also using a trombone with an F trigger you can tell by the extra pipes around the main tuning slide, if you are not experienced in the instrument you will probably have a straight tenor which does not have the trigger it is only the slide you have to change the notes (apart from the harmonic series). Once you advance and become more intermediate (if you do) you will be introduced to the Bb/F trombone (trombone with trigger) this is for most genres the trombone plays in; orchestras, marching bands, concert bands and brass bands but if you consider jazz to be more of your taste then you will most likely stick with the straight tenor.
@paddotk
@paddotk 2 года назад
@@plunger9165 Thanks for the elaborate explanation! It's pretty clear in overall (I assume with 'Bb' you mean B minor right?), but what I don't get is how exactly you play different notes/octaves with one position. With the trigger I can picture two positions and thus notes, but what other actions/positions are there besides sliding to play different notes?

I was hoping he would move the slide (using just the F-trigger doesn't 'count'). I have a trumpet and trombone, and want to try this for one song, but it will require moving the slide. I'll have to stabilize the trombone in some way (perhaps coupling it to the trumpet in some way?)

@kenmcgregor1050
@kenmcgregor1050 2 года назад
He is clearly using the trigger for F/6th position which gives you the G, A, B, D-flat, E-Sharp from F upwards. Also the E-flat and C below the F on the way down at the end of the solo. Basically the above the F it is the same as 2nd valve on a trumpet or 2nd position on the trombone. Above the F that is all you need to get all the semitones. Then the skill to apply the articulation etc.
