XPS foam has all kinds of great uses, but did you know you can use it to create awesome Sci-Fi interiors! Today we'll show you how we use foam and ordinary shop towels to mimic the kind of corridors you see inside movie sets like the Millennium Falcon.

How wide is your hallway? Could you pull off a curved tunnel? If not, look at some of the reference art for Jedi Survivor, specifically the ship interior. They have great design’s for corridors. Appreciate you watching!

@TheSmugglersRoom

Appreciate it. I used a cheap interior latex paint from Homie Depot on this one. I had to mix it in the fly because I didn’t write down the original color, but you can pick a color and have them match it for you. I used a heavy duty double sided stick tape from gorilla glue on these. Super easy

@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom Месяц назад
Thank you. So glad it was valuable for you. The hot wire is a great tool for foam, and we use it often. A hot wire table, where you could control the cut would certainly be helpfu. However with this specific application the use of the sanding block allows for much more control.

What about texturing the foam by rolling a tinfoil ball or a rock on it's surface before applying the paper towels?

@Jaytheradical

@@TheSmugglersRoom I just mean if you bump into it lol, it seems like the foam pads inside the Falcon are there to protect people from bumping into hard surfaces when the ship's moving around.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom Месяц назад
ah gotcha. Honestly, the glue gives this a pretty significant shell. I am blown away with how well it protects it. You can also add more layers of the Mod Podge and it builds up a nice thick layer. Almost like plastic. I've had other areas of the room done for years and those pads are still in great shape.

just an FYI, because there is seeing things on tv/movies, and there is experiencing them in reality. My job sometimes takes me into the bowels of ships. Not cruise liners, but lakers, tug boats, war ships etc. We've all seen the Star Trek Shake, where they get blasted with a photon torpedo and fly out of their chairs are a hurt, and everyone laughs. I don't laugh anymore, because those ships are SOLID METAL! They HURT! You smash your legs off of the stairs, which are increddddibly steep btw So those pads, are an absolute necessity If you were theoretically hit with a photon torpedo, on one of those boats, you would quickly find out how much solid steel walls HURT! And that Star Trek Shake is far more realistic than we've ever given it credit for

Would it not be easier to use a leather padded board? This seems to be a lot of wasted time and effort because it takes to long and it's to flimsy and can easily be destroyed. A leather padded board will hold for much longer.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom Месяц назад
Nothing wrong with other material to be used, you certainly could. I never insinuated that this method was the only way. Just an option. That said, this is not flimsy and not easily destroyed. I’ve had pads such as these that have stood the test of time for years. The PVA glue forms a solid outer shell that holds up incredibly well. It provides a great texture as well. Far cheaper solution than leather, especially with a larger space and many pads to make. And as far as “wasted time and effort” . . . Well, for me the time spent enjoying the hobby is the best part.

Well, I have another problem with my humor, I sometimes think movie lines, books, and music. Like Chris Rea's song Working On It. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xPR7RF2haDU.html
