Great advice Dr Jen 👍 One can NEVER take an eye off young ones. Only takes a split second for something to happen. I've heard so many stories 😢 Hope you're enjoying independence day! ♥️ 🇺🇸 💙 BTW...how is your beautiful Mom doing?

Thank you so much for this timely video. Will definitely share with family and friends. I have a close family member who is 11 and was with her friends at a pool and was embarrassed to admit she couldn't swim. They were taking turns jumping off the diving board, and due to peer pressure, the 11 year old dived in and nearly drowned. She's now traumatized and won't go near a pool or body of water.

Thank you for getting this important and pertinent information out. You made such great points. They are all important, but the one where someone needs to be diligent about watching the kids in the pool came in very useful a couple times when my sisters and I were children. One time I came to my sister’s rescue when bullies at the community pool at day camp were holding her under the water. Another time I took my baby sister into our neighbor’s pool. I was walking her around the shallow end, but our neighbor had a steep drop-off going into the deep end, and I found myself suddenly immersed in the water except for my hands and arms that were lifting my baby sister out of the water. (I don’t recall that she was wearing floaties, which in hindsight she should have been wearing). I held her out of the water as long as I could, and just before I was going to have to dunk her, so I could take a breath and yell for help, I felt someone take her out of my hands. I immediately came to the surface to breathe, and I saw my mom holding my sister. I was so relieved that she was watching the pool and came to our rescue. My mom always either watched the kids in the pool herself or designated another responsible adult to watch them. ❤️

I totally agree I've been there with children take every precaution it can't be said enough, adults have more options there are life preserver options as mentioned you should not mind wearing them you should. In this field these days they refer to them as PFD's personal flotation device some of them look like jackets you might see someone on a jet ski wearing one and there are also some that appear even narrower these have the inner tube bubble empty and folded inwards it is operated by a CO2 cartridge (a gas tube) so here when needed you pull on a cord and this activates the gas tube automatically inflating the life preserver or pfd. There is also a PFD in the form of a fanny pack this is even much less conspicuous everyone should wear one, and it also operates with a gas tube, with this one however they want you to have the fanny pack Infront of you when ready to deploy here once again you pull on a cord and a lifejacket self deploys right in front of you just put it on.. Ok so these gas tube operated devices are reusable when ready you can rinse them off dry them and fold them back in place you just have to replace the gas tube with its respective gas tube so know the model and serial number for your device they are not of one size.. There is also a very inexpensive uninflated life preserver that you can wear like any other over the back of your head and across your chest, its uninflated empty it has a tube on one side like a straw that when needed you can blow in the tube and inflate it yourself this is also reusable. There are also life preservers for children but this does Not mean that anyone should take the eyes off the youngster. I'm going to end this by saying that its very difficult to remain calm when this happens but you must try too, you will suffer of an intense burning and cutting pain as water crosses your mucous membranes invoking involuntary bodily reactions and movements in desperation and this will make things worst. So listen to Jen and I would suggest getting at least a pfd gas operated fanny pack when going for a swim (or style of your preference)

Learn about Rip Currents: how to spot them, what to do if you get caught in one. Also, No Swimming signs are there for a reason. Just in the past few days we had a tragedy locally. A group of teens ignored No Swimming signs that are posted because of a strong current between islands. They went into the water anyway and were swept out into the Gulf. One swam back. The others, except for one, were rescued. The last one was found deceased in the water after a couple of days. 17yo. Another "obvious" tip: swim with a buddy.
