So don't smack me, but I once used a dish sponge that I didn't realize had been pre-treated with detergent to wipe algae off the side of my betta tank, while the fish was in it. I thought for sure the betta would die, but he was ok. Now I only use those scrubby type sponges that aren't sold in plastic packaging and never have anything added to them.

The only time I ever get people saying they don't know how to clean or look after fish is when a partner has died. Had a lady in not that long ago wanting to know how to clean the external filters on her husbands pond after he had passed away. One of the best setups of a Koi pond I had seen in ages all made by him.

I remember when I was a kid my Dad’s friends wife had a fishtank and her fish kept dying. My Dad kept fish(yes with an under gravel filter old school)😊 so she asked him what she was doing wrong. She then said I keep it really clean. I clean the tank and all the gravel with dish liquid. My Dad audibly sighed then calmly explained to her why that was wrong wrong wrong. This was the 80s. She actually felt so bad. She ended up not only learning how to properly care for her aquarium but found a book on aquatic plants. Being a florist she took to it, well, like a fish to water. Happy ending ❤ Nowadays, with the internet. With abundant information an instant away. There is no excuse for being a terrible pet owner.

So you kind of summed up the problem here. Your neighbor was able to get correct information because she recognized and asked someone successful at it. The Internet is powered by content, not accurate content. So with the Internet, someone is more likely to get wrong information sorted by popularity. That's the problem.

Not too far from my humble beginnings. My aunt bred neon tetras for the LFS when I was single digits old. I loved sitting in her fish room watching the fish. I always wanted a tank but couldn't afford it. Skip to me an adult with kids. My son won some gold fish from the fair. We rushed out to wally world for a tank. Bought a ten gallon kit and some black gravel. First fish died in a week. Second died in three. The tank was always dirty and cloudy. I felt terrible they died. Knew I could do better. I started watching youtube videos to educate myself. Twenty years and 5 dirted planted tanks later I say I did better.

I remember doing 100% full water changes, cleaning the gravel around 1994 with no knowledge about beneficial bacteria and all that.. this was way before internet age.. aquarium books were so hard to come by.. and if you got it it was just fish identification. Maybe it was in a part of the world where the fish sellers did not share vital info. I remember my dad keeping an aquarium when I was small. This was the 90s too. It's balanced and had clear water. No filter whatsoever. Somebody influenced my dad to clean it constantly to make it cleaner. He did that, ended up with some dead fish afterwards. Also there's us children who keep overfeeding the fish, making the water dirty. Then my dad felt it's just too much hassle he stopped the aquarium hobby 😢 I felt bad now.

I was literally thinking about this. I had a fish tank when I was like 14 and never even thought about maintenance/changing the tank water. My parents always did that part when they had a piranha tank, so I guess I assumed they did it for mine, but I never saw it. I just fed them.

@@whiteboy7thstsfanboy that’s how it was for me growing too. I saw a beautiful 55 gallon tank but didn’t know anything other than wanting to add fish😂. I told him specifally "pls, fill tank with tap water, use bacteria after some time, turn filter on and wait at least 3 weeks before you buy a fish". I recommended a fish store where he could buy a beautiful betta or something. I told the store owner that such a client will arrive soon. We currently live in a world were everyone's "opinion" is valid, and is held to the same degree of credibility as actual fact; and the people dominating it can't wrap their head around the reality of science - that it is data that needs to be ever re-confirmed and statistically proven (not absolut) and that the conclusions needs to be updated as we accumulate more data and learn new things. Pier Review matters! Just because the "truth" is not absolut does not make it less true and we can also never prove a negative. And that for some reason have all these people totally missundertand the concept of research and why some should do the talking and others do the listening. Instead have all these self proclaimed experts with no humility, no standars. It angers me every time. Yeah, I am old and grumpy.

When I first started playing around with fish I actually found the pet shop very helpful.. my first tank I got for free 100L and it was filthy putrid brown and stank!! So I actually did completely empty the tank and replace the gravel I kept the ornaments though and I refilled it and let it go for a month it went all green and foggy and I was worried that the fish was unsafe but I went and asked the pet shop and got some information did a 50% water change added some conditioner and some clarify added a sponge filter with air stone and now it's clear and has been a year and 6 cleanings and all is well.. I do have a mix of fish 2 of which can be bullies (1x dwarf blue guwami and 1x angel fish) they only bully new fish of the same breeds though.. my fancy goldfish and panda cats are all very happy.. I have 5 Cory cats 2x pandas 2x bronze 1 red eye albino all are doing well and are 2 inches each and I have 4x fancy goldfish all are very happy and I won't add more fish in this tank but am looking for another 100L tank and 3 dividers to house some betas but they will war so I will need to separate the tank into 3 parts as the kids want 1 each of different colours 😂.. I also found google search to be fairly right!! Not everything is perfect information but a good 90% was very good information so there is that.. I'd never trust tictok for anything other than a few laughs that's all it's good for.

👍🤠 Long before social media (RU-vid) I knew nothing about how to keep an aquarium. I used to empty my 125 take it outside and scrub it with Simple Green. I cringe now thinking about that.

Its literally common sense unless u were really really young(like below 7 y/o which i believe u weren't) social media(youtube) isn't old enough that before it, people wouldnt have the slightest idea about what household cleaning chemicals are made of and how harmful they could be for humans let alone fishes! Sorry but to me thats just an excuse for being ignorant

Unfortunately when i first got fishes over 20 years ago i also made the same mistake in cleaning out the entire tank and decor smh. Thank goodness i started researching and educating myself. What im getting at is that all these videos seem to come from people who failed to do the proper research like i did. Back then when i started the Internet wasnt what it is today so there is absolutely no excuse for people today, all the info you need is right at your finger tips.

Just wow I have been into fish business for four years now and when I started out my tank never got that dirty I had no experience whatsoever. The only thing I can remember actually doing is changing most of the water every three days I think that’s what actually kept my fish alive . I mean, I don’t know if they’re doing those videos for views or they just really have no clue but common sense definitely goes along way !! Here I am with no experience started out with a 10 gallon struggling to keep the water crystal clear, but it never got green because I changed it every three days without experience. Then I moved up to a 29 gallon slowly water was crystal clear beautiful with no experience. Then I moved up to a 125 gallon planted aquarium. I always wanted to planted aquarium but wasn’t successful with the 29 gallon but now professional and it’s been four years crystal clear beautiful view canisters on there not over feeding and yeah successful now.

Not only you can break the tank or accidentally pour the fish out when you're dumping water. You can also injure yourself, you're handling a glass box, even if not shattered, the corners, if enough pressure is given, can cut you.

Sir. The first video. That great system of cleaning everything…scrubbing everything… does that work for 50gal tanks or is that reserved for fools with too many fish in too small a tank… Great video…. Truth.

I Knew nothing about fish other than salt vs fresh before I let my daughter win a goldfish, I am so lucky I got into reptiles first to learn that each species requires extra care and that lead me to do more research on fish, thank you for your knowledge

Don't fret! If people call you (and other people who knows what they are doing) INFLUENCER, you should be proud and happy! Because it's people who does things right, and know what they are doing, who should be influencing other people. Not the nimwits you've shown in this video. I had aquariums when I was a teenager in the early 90s, when there wasn't the wealth of information from the internet, that we have today. I read loads of books, and yet, I didn't get it right. RU-vid and other places has improved my knowledge, so that I'm now again feeling secure enough, that I can do it again, much better than before.

Most of us started out like this. I was 16-18 years old when I had my first aquarium (about 25 years ago) and I did some barbaric things when I looked back on how I "cared" for my fish. 100% water changes every month, scrubbing every inch of the tank, rinsing the colored gravel and using fake plants and buying new filter media every time the carbon filter got too dirty. Yep, I was these people in the video when I was a teen 😂 Don't judge them, spam them with enough advice in their comments and hope they read and listen for the sake of their fish

I have a 10gal tank next to my kitchen sink. Its planted and has shrimp and snails in it. I just use a small 1/4 hose and drain some of the water directly into the sink. But i definitely don't empty the tank out completely. I change out maybe a 1/4 of the water.
