How to be an Artist! What I wish someone told me before I went to University. Sharing what I know now to anyone who is questioning if University is necessary. Do you NOT want to, spend 9k a year on University? No? I don't want you to either! haha
In this video I have listed the FOUR easy STEPS you can take by yourself to get on a solid path to becoming a Freelance Artist or Illustrator, without spending 27K on University.
All it takes is hard work and dedication!
Let me know if there are any other topics you want me to talk about or if you have any questions you would like me to answer in the comments or in a future video.

Thanks Nic...makes a lot of sense. I believe that increasingly, education and training for a lot of roles in future will transition toward a less collegiate-based background. E.g. in data science which is burgeoning, there is no "1 way" to study. I can see modular based methods are the way forward...to build skills, stay flexible and be creative. This is haphazard, but you can choose instructors that gel with you. It should be about what you cab do; what ideas you create. The education system we have was designed primarily to produce factory workers. The 21st Century and the modern technological world scream out for big changes. We ignore that at our peril and ultimately, the market will decide. We can look at this as an opportunity to be cost efficient and flexible...or not. Thanks for another entertaining viewpoint with food for thought!🙏🏻💙

100% agree! I had a lot of fun at uni whilst doing my illo degree but it definitely didnt push my work forwards or prepare me for a professional practice.

I feel I hear this so much, that University didn’t “prepare” people. Seeming to miss out, how to make it into a job 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for your comment, it’s really good to know this, and to hear about people’s experiences. 🙏🙏🙏

I think firstly having a passion and love for what you do whether that be art or anything else is the most important thing, in this age of online learning/social media you can create your dreams Thanks for sharing this video 🙏 😊

Oh, how I wish I had seen this 18 years ago when I was embarking on a college career I would repeatedly start and stop because I wasn’t so interested in the stuff outside of my art courses. This is a video I will present to others who are asking themselves the same questions. And keep talking candidly, Nic! You’re a great speaker as well!

Absolutely agree !! I'm not studying arts.. I mean Im studying literature it's an art but I love drawing and painting .. I'm not good but it's working with you tube stuff .. and I like my journey ! Much love ❤ awesome video
@NicMac

I love that! It’s all about the journey! For sure. You most certainly are an artist, with literature but also with drawing, I can tell! because every artist says and thinks those three words”I’m not good” ahah But with every piece of work made, those words eventually fade... :) thanks for watching Mehdi 🙏🙏

Great advice - I've told people very much the same advice in most creative careers. Nearly everything I've learned in order to be successful in my career - I learned from RU-vid coupled with trial and error. Graphic design, video production, music, editing, woodworking, making - everything. I learned much more on this wonderful free platform than I did in my four years in university. There's no question that my degree made it easier to get my first corporate job, but that's not because I was actually more qualified with it - just that companies are trained to value it. I think that perception is quickly changing and soon it'll be easier and easier to freelance OR work for a larger business without a degree - as long as you can demonstrate the skills.

So true! It’s really exciting to think about how things will change over time. University definitely shouldn’t be the Status Quo anymore. Love that you mention woodworking, video production and others, it really does apply to all of it 🙌 Thanks so much for your comment and for watching Daniel 🙏🙏

Thank you so much for this! It's funny how sometimes it takes someone else to say something out loud for you to realise/solidify your own thinking. Your third point really resonated with me 🙏 I think subconsciously I've been worried about how I need to be this or that and how I "should" be approaching things vs. how things come naturally to me. It's true, we don't have to wait to get a design job or be paid to create what we want to create. There's such a big emphasis on titles these days, but in reality, we have freedom to make our own projects. We can build our portfolios through our own means, free from outside pressure. Passion is what speaks and if others can see that though our work then the other things will surely fall in to place 🙂

Thanks so much for this comment! I can’t agree more! There’s unfortunately a lot of comparison, especially when it comes to brands that people have worked with and ‘official jobs’ etc It can make it seem like those are the only things we can show...its funny isn’t it.....but Good work is good work, skill is skill! So let’s show it ALL and keep making! 🙌🙌🙌 So glad it resonated!! Thanks for watching Becky 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks Nic for these valuable tips! I am in second year of university, and I realize that university is not essential to become an illustrator, but when I started I thought it was what I needed. (Your content is always a great inspiration to me, thank you!)

this is coming at exactly the right time for me. i'm not interested in going back to uni (i'm 32 & got a BA years ago in anthropology) but my dream to be an artist as a career is starting to burn a hole in me and i gotta do something. there is some great advice here... its so hard to see the path from where i am now (an english teacher abroad with a watercolor hobby) to where i dream of being (a vision of me in my studio, having coffee as i get to work, painting something big and expressive).... how to find a way there? i'm constantly searching. thanks for sharing your insight and i'd definitely be interested in more vids like this. keep up the good work !

That’s so good to know and that’s so good to read, Thankyou for sharing E V🙏 I believe the best way, is to promise that you keep painting and don’t stop 🙌 everything else, falls into place from that :)

@@NicMac thanks for the inspiration this evening! so glad! i'm already writing out a plan right now 😁ngl i don't really know what a brief is, exactly, but i found an article that i want to make an illustration for (about mental health/negative self talk) ... i like the idea of making the type of work i wish i had in order to learn how to do it, giving myself a weekly assignment... i need structure but no one is going to make that structure for me, so gonna try making my own!
