Hello! I'm Nic! An Illustrator and Muralist based in London/Madrid My aim for this channel is to tell stories through art and show the "how-to" "step by step" process behind different projects and artworks I work on.
I also have a regular Series called Artist Covers, where I create 'Cover art' for a song or album to create original artworks.
I sell prints and more at my shop; www.nicmacillustration.com/shop
I want to repaint my skateboard to a Deadpool logo on the bottom and the word “Deadpool” on the front, I used to be good drawing years ago in elementary but I have no artistic skills, anyone have any tips
@@ProFudgey if it’s a exact copy of an existing logo, you can print it out and use “transfer paper” to mark out/trace the design onto the board directly. Then it will be easy to paint it accurately. In my video “painting for a clients house” you can see how to do it, I made my own transfer paper, but is the same technique 👌
@@ProFudgey it’s when I’m colouring a whole sheet in graphite, shouldn’t be too far in, sorry I don’t have the time right now to go and find the exact moment for you but it’s in that video if you are interested in learning more :)
@@NicMac I used chalk and traced the Deadpool logo and then put it on the skateboard and traced the logo on the other side and the chalk on the other side went on the skateboard and from there I just traced in pencil lightly and painted, I didn't have enough time though so I have to resand and redo it and use a clear coat
Can I do this with a board that has stickers on it? My friend gave a really cool board that has a sick look to it but I think it may be stickers or something and idk if it would come off with the chemicals that this needs
@@NolimitClub_ scrape them with a scraper, no chemicals though, and I know water can be a fit funny with skateboards so maybe only a slight amount to help things along, but very very little, if you can scrape most of it dry that will be best and then sand the rest as smooth as you can, it should work. If you don’t mind the texture, you don’t have to fully remove them, if you get at least 80% off and have a bit of a sand, the gesso layer will be fine over the top and once dried go ahead with your design 👌🙌
Is the gloss varnish absolutely necessary? I just finished the satin varnish coat and I’m waiting until tomorrow to work on the top of the deck. I experienced some cracking where I had used black pasco over white enamel spray paint, so I wanted to seal that pasco asap after I cleaned up the lines. Any advice moving forward? I’m making a board that will be ridden but plan to make more in the future. I can’t wait to work on the top and apply grip tape but I’m worried about the painting on the bottom being pressed against a table or soft material. I love your art work, thank you for making these videos!
@@Sf4life1216 it’s not necessary, It’s just the finish I wanted ….I will say it will be slightly more durable with a harder varnish but it doesn’t have to be gloss, you can get matte ones too, but being able to brush on something else, gives it a slightly thicker barrier. But only slightly. Both methods won’t last so if you’re happy as is, I’d say you can leave it. Also there won’t be any issue when your applying the grip tape, you can lean it on a folded towel or something, but with the spray it’s all dry and sealed in👌 And yes the posca can crack in thicker areas sometimes I usually go over it twice or hand paint larger black areas… I hope that makes sense and helps!! 🙏🙏🙏
@@NicMac thank you so much! I found that I did need to use a brush at one point. I only had white spray paint, so I sprayed it into a jar to paint with 🤣 I appreciate the advice and all of your work! I’ve been documenting the process, at some point I’d love to post it somewhere! I can’t wait to work on it today!
@@Sf4life1216 let me know when it’s done I’d love to see! Thanks also for your support and stay subscribed to see more, should be doing another board soon 👀👌👌
I hope you wear a respirator when working with resin. I know artists who have developed severe allergies. Keep up the amazing work. Your work is super cool.
Thank you for posting this. I recently got a different skateboard deck and wanted to paint over the old deck and this helped so much with all of it. Thank you! I do have a question tho. Does Aquarell colors work?
@@King-ls3cw “Acuarela?” Like watercolour? It can work on fresh wood but you don’t have much control as it will bleed a lot, and you can’t paint watercolour on gesso or emulsion so I would say not really….but maybe I don’t know what aquarell is? If it’s a brand of acrylic paint then definitely yes that will work 👌👌
@@King-ls3cw yes that will work, any paint will work really 👌whether it’s fine art paint or wall paint, but yes, oil paint should work as long as you prep the board correctly, oil based paint may need a particular type of “base-layer” paint, I don’t really use oil so do have a look online to see if standard emulsion or gesso is ok to use or if they recomend something else 👌
@@actualtrashyy yes, sand it. Just enough to make the surface rough, you don’t need to remove the design completely, just make it rough enough so that it feels matte, so that the paint will adhere to it. And you can start from scratch with a plain painted base layer of gesso or some type of emulsion 👌
Omg, I’m so jealous of your digital skills. Mine suck! I’m painting a beautiful rainbow colors and then I’m dotting it out into a 3dpick! Someday, I’ll be done. I have two adult children in the lgbtq community, so I am just going to be the biggest supporter they have! This is beautiful!
@@CozzyKorner your STORY is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing, and I from what I can tell think it’s pretty clear to me that they have a phenomenal mum! 🙌🙏🌈 so thank you for that too :)
Bahhh just had the same thing happen to me. I wish I would have seen your other video. Do you think if you varnished after you sanded it down then re poured it that it would have finished flat?
@@saskchauchtv7417 I wouldn’t “varnish” with normal varnish on resin, it also runs the risk of reacting badly when you do re-pour…. but as I did with this, repouring after sanding definitely fixes it, but of course for this board it needed a third go to make it flat cause the damage was pretty bad, but as I explain in the video I had my reasons for not doing it that third time, are you going to give it a second go? If you sand it down as much as you can, and if it’s a flat surface )unlike my curved board) it should work a treat for you 👌👌
@@NicMac thanks a lot 🌹 I'm not very happy with the French Nazis coming to power. The LGBT🌈 movement is, as in Hungary and Slovenia, a target to be destroyed...
Depends what you’re doing after…. If you’re using it as a skateboard it will start to wear earlier than the paint will as the markers are not ‘permanent markers’ …….if you don’t seal them before brushing varnish on, it will smudge. Hope that helps
I never thought about painting through-out life until the summer of 2012 rolled around and I decided I wanted a new hobby- so I picked up a 10 pack of oils and an assortment of brushes for $2.99 at Michaels. Within a day or 3 I decided Vincent Van Gogh was going to be my inspiration and off I went. How about you- any inspirations? It's obvious that you love what you do and I am going to guess that when you were 2 you knew you were going to be an artist :) You seem to have that imagination flowing inside you as your painting progresses .. Great stuff , your art is a breath of fresh air !
Random question if my painting on a skateboard has a matt finish if i resin it will it bring it to that mirror gloss or not . Ive painted it with acrylics but some of the shades are matt as the white I used to mix most colours is a flat white . Ino that posca is fairly matt so I thought you may know ? Thanks 🙏
@@soakandshine92 make sure you let whatever finish you have put on, to fully cure, at least 3 full days to be on the safe side 👌 but yes, it should work a treat! I wish you good luck as it can be tricky but it’s worth it👌👌
@@NicMac thanks for the quick reply! No worries I just misunderstood! Thank you for the clarification! All in all a great video! Thanks for sharing your process!
My pair or a different pair that looks similar? … unfortunately if it is my por, I don’t think I’m popular enough for them to be worth anything ahaha sorry about that 🤣
Im Currently in the progress of doing my own 1st Hand Painted deck and stumbled on this clip.. this looks so cool. I gave you a Sub.. it gave me great ideas and tips.. great work
Looks great and very helpful video. The same has happened to me unfortunately but as you say, it’s all a learning. Btw I use clear fishing line to hang them, very strong and almost invisible, either that or a small d ring bracket screwed to the back of the deck. 👍👍
