Your channel is a hidden gem. I love all this in depth stuff about pitching. It’s fascinating seeing how many variables there are that affect performance. I’m always learning something new.

I found out about Cade Smith when the Mets played the Guardians earlier in the season and was super impressed. Really thought he should have made the AS team, glad hes getting some love cuz hes nasty

Yes! He was my biggest all-star snub. I’m bummed he didn’t get the opportunity to compete on that stage

"K'd Smith". Dude's nasty. The Guardians bullpen in general has been nasty. Now if only the team can figure out what is going on with our starters 😅.

Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams have electric stuff, and Ben Lively has come out of nowhere and been rock solid! They are 1 solid starter away from a deep OCT playoff run. They need to add Jack Flaherty by the deadline!!!

Lance I have a question: does stuff+ like vertical and horizontal differences in movement of every secondary pitch compared to fastball, or just certain pitches? Thank you
@LanceBroz
@LanceBroz Месяц назад
Good q - so it depends on the model’s features. It’s my understanding that most of the public models have some element of this (Eno’s on FanGraphs for example). But I also don’t believe it’s an impactful feature in the model, as in, it doesn’t matter more in terms of predictiveness than velocity, vert / hrz independent of fastball, etc It’s a good debate because we’ve seen some teams change pitches that stay the same in grade that then perform better. And the explanation as to why it performs better is likely connected to command or how the pitch looks / plays off the fastball (those are both connected to some extent I would bet). Taj Bradley for example, has a similar Stuff+ slider compared to last year and yet it’s much better than last year, I would guess, because of how he can command it or how it plays off the fastball

Will we ever see a bounce back to a lot more 4sfb usage?
@LanceBroz
@LanceBroz Месяц назад
Always a chance. I would think it’s unlikely because of how games are structured with relievers taking a larger % of innings, and they generally throw less 4S. So league wide that would need to shift back. There’d need to be some strike-throwing incentive or SP invective. Then we might see it kick back up.
