These 25 fantasy series are considered the best, must-reads, modern classics that you can't miss! Throughout the video I will be sharing the top 25 books from the Fantasy subreddit "top fantasy books 2023" (the list is updated every 2 years, so the next one will arrive in 2025). And I would like to present you a challenge, let's count how many of these books have you read! How many points do you accumulate!
The rules are simple, 2 points for a series that you've read (if it's very long and you've read more than half, let's count it)! and 1 point if you either own the series or you've read the first book!
Note that you will find some sci-fi books also present in this list, but it's definitely a minority!

21 when i started watching this video, but after hearing someone else glow about wheel of time, I ordered the first two box sets, so 22 by the end of the video. Your description of The Stormlight Archive rang so true with me. I was sat in the dentist having just had a tooth removed, reading whilst waiting for the ok to go home,, so in pain but also slightly drugged, and the end of the first book had me fist pumping in the middle of a crowded waiting room with a massive bit of gauze in my mouth. Great series. great video.

Love the fun little game you turned this into! 27 points for me, which was better than I was expecting, considering that prior to a couple of years ago, I had only read three of these series (Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Song of Ice and Fire). I'll revisit this in a year, given pretty much everything on this list is on my TBR :)

@@FunFantasyBooks Hahah. Thanks, but I don't think so. :) It's pretty easy to get one point on this scale, but it's going to take me a while to get two points for series like Malazan, Discworld, Realm of the Elderlings, etc! But, again, good job of putting a fun spin on this list!

Got 23 points (mostly for having all these books :D), but great choices! Was shocked you haven't read Harry Potter haha. I read it first time when I was around 11 and reread at least one of the books every 2 years ever since - the audiobooks are amazing as well, just recently re-listened the series, highly recommend.

I got 17 points which is good considering that from 2014-2019 I would reread ASOIAF just about once a year. Being stuck at home in 2020 encouraged me to try new series, and I like to read books that inspired the series I watch. So in recent years I read all of the Witcher books and finished up to book 9 of WOT. Also making my way through the Cosmere and I'm very interested in Discworld and First Law, so my score will definitely go up in time!!

27 points for me. Only scored 0 for 5 of them though. I'm taking from this that I need to finish more series. This is such a good idea, I love the interactive nature with the scoring system. Oh please, do more! We should do a few on your Patreon, or are they already there and I just haven't looked hard enough?

I think I got 8. I am a big fantasy reader but to date have mostly read Middle Grade and YA, working on getting into "adult" and plan on finishing Stormlight this year (well getting up to date anyway), and have about 4 of the series on my TBR. So many books so little time

33 points for me, so I guess I’m pretty well read in fantasy. Wheel of Time and Realm of the Elderlings are the two big ones I haven’t read yet. I’ve put them off due to their size and fear they wouldn’t hold up for a first-time reader today. But I should probably give them a try.

Surprised to get 31 points on this! Don't own many of the books (libraries exist) but have read over half or completed most of the series which I had read. More surprised that Stormlight beats out the Tolkien Legandarium! An unfinished series which hasn't stood the test of time against the author who created the entire genre of High Fantasy? I haven't read any Stormlight so maybe I need to but at this point i find it hard to believe!

The Witcher: Greatness (just make believe The Lady of the Lake isn't a thing). Gideon: A fun read. Harrow: atrocious. Side note. The Trials of Empire: magnificent, but relentless. Ending: emotional (...and I'm not talking about the battle). 23/50. Love the channel. I hope you're well.

I can't believe you haven't read Harry Potter 😅. Especially as you loved the movies. The books are far superior (and basically give yourself the same story you gave us for asoiaf 😂)

Abercrombie is my favourite author, if you ever get more into it great, I recommend persevering but don't sweat it if it's not for you. I read Assassin's Apprentice and wasn't totally into it, the first two Malazan books but wasn't really feeling it

45 points for me... I own Piranesi and Broken Earth trilogy but haven't gotten to them yet. I've only read the first book of Locked Tomb and Kingkiller (though I own Wise Man's Fear). I'm only giving myself 1 point for Malazan which I've read the first three books.

I received a score of 20. I listen to around 5 books a week and most are fantasy, but I think my tastes run differently than the mainstream. I’m not into fantasy involving apocalyptic, futuristic space travel, Steven King or Sanderson. I’m just a freak in that respect. I really did enjoy all of Terry Pratchett’s books. I’ve read a lot of them a few times over. I’ve read the Harry Potter series multiple times. I have been reading Ursula K. Le Guinn’s books since 1972. A few of the others on the list I really enjoyed.

Only Seven I feel like a slacker. I refuse to start series if I can't find several of the books at the library. Sometimes I buy part of a series at used book sales and then look for book 1 before I start. Long series can be so frustrating trying to find all the different books. Lists like this give me plenty of books to look for at the library and sales. Thanks

As someone who has STARTED a lot of Fantasy series in the last year, I can honestly say that Green Bone Saga is one of the series I'd recommend to almost anyone. Unlike a lot of the other series on this list which seem to have rabid fans, but also people who pretty actively dislike the series, Green Bone seems to be almost universally liked. :)

Me: 1: ive watched Expanse tv series. 2 Geralt. Loved the spanish traslation 2 Earthsea 2 Dune 2 Harry Potter 2 Ice&Fire 2 LotR My total: 13 points I keep not understanding what are scify books like Red Rising, matabot or Expanse doing in this list.

Don`t bother with The Kingkiller Chronicle, it is one of my favorite trilogies, only problem is book 3 as we still are waiting now 13 years after book two, I highly doubt we will see it in our life time.

24 points for me, and of all of those I would actively recommend only Dresden Files and Locke Lamora as series. I'm not sure that the latter would make any Top N Series lists, though. Of the others, there are books I would recommend, but not really full series: LotR is brilliant, The Hobbit is quite good for what it is, the Silmarillion is often tedious, and the Unfinished Tales are a research project. Dune is brilliant, Dune Messiah is quite good, Children of Dune is decent, and God Emperor is dreadful. There are series I've begun and that I think have promise, but I haven't continued with them for whatever reason. And there are several series in that list that I'm done with and have no desire to revisit, either because they're just not for me (though I can see why others like them) or because I see no redeeming value to them at all. But then I've only read somewhere north of 4000 SF&F books over the last 50+ years, so my experience is limited. 8-)

So many of these are the same kind of Fantasy. Hard to agree with the title of the video when it's a very specific kind of Fantasy being depicted in the list. Better title would have been "You Don't Love Fantasy If You Haven't Heard of These." I agree that they should be considered Classic Fantasy. I own a fair portion of these books, or had owned them at one point. But most of these are not my kind of Fantasy... They're entirely far too dense and far too dull for my tastes. I don't like overly descriptive books, which usually is a huge reason why these books don't work for me. I like just enough description to get me through as I won't remember it otherwise. So yeah. Lover of Fantasy here. Fantasy is my reader identity. But I only scored 11 points at best.

The list definitely has a bias towards modern fantasy, specially books that have been resonating in the Reddit / YT community, but agreed majority tend to lean towards the epic fantasy side!

First Dune book = Amazing Second book, Messiah = Good, but a downgrade Third book, Children = OK, author being an old man in the 60's started to bother me in the female characters Forth book, God Emperor = I slogged through because everyone said it was their favorite, but it was a mem for me. I gave up at this point The first Dune book is so Good that I will still say it's one of the best Fantasy books of all time. Dune Messiah is worth it to conclude the first book. After that I would say everything is optional.

The Dragonlance trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is #1 and it's not even close. #2 is the Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore. #3 is Middle Earth. #4 is Wheel of Time. Song of Ice & Fire shouldn't be in the top 25. The rest of the list are average series at best.

I read all but not necessarily would put them in this ranks and several are sci-fi not fantasy. Dune? It’s fundamental political sci-fi. Less character driven than the movie more political, way more depth and layers. Harry Potter? Who cares? Not that big as the hype. Earthsea is better. I was old enough to not jump on the bandwagon. I read it but I wasn’t impressed that much. Jade City… I have the feeling that the Asian thing has stronger punch than the book deserves, without it the series would fall lower. Malazan? The booktubers make a big issue of it. Just don’t read anything else and that’s it. It won’t be so hard. The main thing is that most of the people expect some standard fantasy formulas and it won’t work. That’s why they are frustrated. If you just read it it’s a fun read and you realize, Wheel of Time is a child in being epic to this one. It’s not a good vs evil, no chosen one, nothing like that. That’s the starting point. And that’s why it’s realistic. Dresden will be progressively better and a bigger world and more in characters.

@@ronelia.creative Sure. I should have said popular instead of good, because it’s really just a popularity contest at the end of the day. You’re saying it like you have a very specific aśsumption about it, though. Let’s not pretend like there aren’t a TON of popular books written by women. Pretty much everything recommended on the internet outside of fantasy is predominantly female authors.

The Name of the Wind is about a moron. I quit reading 1/4 way through the second book. With so many other books around I see no reason to bother with it. The Hobbit is very good. The Lord of the Rings is even better. Try the Sword of Shannara.

@@FunFantasyBooks I hope you read all 3 books. The trilogy: Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara, are often counted as 1 book. There are good books in the series after those too. So many good books. Forget The Name of the Wind series until you've read everything else.
