Do you know what my goal is? My goal is to speak English well, be able to talk about topics that a native speaker talks, and understand English. No matter if it's a good or a bad English. Of course, if it's too bad, I won't understand it, and it's ok. For example, I'm a native spanish speaker, and I don't speak perfectly, because anybody isn't perfect in any language, but I'm always trying to perfect my speech in my native language and in the languages I want to speak with fluency. That's my goal with English. One's always learning. I'm even learning some things in my native language. One never stops learning. That's a good thing about language learning

Exactly! that's what I always say. There is no such thing as "knowing" a language. Take my english for example, I always misspell or forget words and have to look them up. Also, sometimes I don't know what a particular word means and have to reason its meaning from the context. So my English is far from perfect. But you know, those things happen to me in Spanish too! So I guess I don't know Spanish either, or maybe we need to relax our deffinition of "knowing" a language.

You are right Cristian, I have been thinking about this issue, and I don´t want to look like an american, or english man when I speak english, I just want to be myself. The thing with this matter is that people who say they want to speak like a native speaker they are quite vain, however, getting fluency in a foreign language is a real challenge that show your skills.

I'm Stefano, I'm Italian. I 've been learning english for all my life. I started when I was 4 and now I'm 53, but I still make mistakes. And I like it because it's a way to go on studying english. Above all because my level is still a low one and I don't refer to a standard way to measure it (even though my standard level could be an intermediate one), but my own perception of it. I like your way of teaching english, because you're not teaching english but the way the english people think when they speak and the reason why they choose that way of speaking. So you made an effort in describing grammar instead of prescribing it. That way is really useful to finally fix and join together two worlds: the academic way of speaking (sounding so false and formal) and the real life english (so near to the hearts of native speakers). You are a really good observer. That is my favourite skill. I like to use it in learning english. Semantics and logic help in deep analysis of the structures behind producing a language, especially in the way native speakers do. Personally I make some hypothesis on the grammar rules I learned to simplify them in order to understand them deeply. For instance if we talk about the difference about the present perfect and the present perfect continuous I cut it short in saying that the present perfect continuous is used to complain about something, because you have done something for a certain amount of time with no results at the end. So I call it the Complaining tense. Do you agree? You allow me to be consciuous of many deep rules of the english language such those inside your great video about phrasal verbs using biscuits. I got the importance of the role of prepositions affecting verbs in the meaning when they are combined in phrasal verbs. For example the exchange of the part of speech between prepositions and verbs: let's take DRIVE and OFF. One of the meaning of Off is To Disappear. So the Preposition OFF becomes the verb and the Verb DRIVE becomes the Adverb of Manner: OFF= DISAPPEAR + DRIVE = WITH THE CAR (the object that is being driven). That's all for now. Keep going on this way! You make us feel better in facing many contradictions among the english language, because of your approach that turn difficult concepts into easy ones. Great Job! Bye, Stefano

Hi Christian, yes, it was absolutely interesting! Well, on The Internet I found a lot of videos entitled: "How to SOUND LIKE a native speaker" or " SPEAKING LIKE a native speaker". So, on balance I'd say that we English learners should aim to achieve the "sound-like-a-native" status instead of the "speaking-like" one. :-D . Thanks for you always nice and peculiar lessons, hugs from Italy ;-)

@@NicolaSiliprandi70 I'm an examiner for Trinity and Cambridge and the criteria for the top bands (highest level spoken exams) are in comparison with native speakers. However, as Christian said, it's nearly unattainable to sound exactly like a native speaker. Be confident, think about what you are saying and try to improve but you can still pass a C2 Trinity exam and not sound exactly like a native speaker.

Hey Christian... I've just recently found out your channel and it's been amazing to wacth your videos in the past 4 days. There's not a single day I don't catch myself watching one of them... and most of the time I get insterested just by the titles your put on them; that's amazing. You also seem to be extremely funny and enthusiastic, which I'm not sure it's true or just part of the character you created for the channel. It's been two months since I started working with private English lessons here in Brazil and I know my English is far from being excellent, but that's what I am, an educator, a teacher... and I've studied to be one. Id like to thank you for everything you say in your videos and today, I've decided to watch all of your videos since day one and try to leave a comment, even if it's a simple one. I believe your videos are going to be very helpful for my career. Thanks a lot Chris.

Love it!! When I started to meet people from others countries by Social Media and some of them loved Spanish. Several asked me to teach them Spanish. I was willing to do it but I figured out how difficult it is! Even if I was a teacher in the University and I was teaching in the Church to little kids for many years, but not Spanish! I realized that I could help them to practice and I may correct them but to teach the language is a very different story. Although as a Mexican, I'm frequently asked to teach people to talk as Mexicans, because of the funny part! Thanks! I love the video!

Hi Christian, Your videos are awesome. I like your way of explaining different facets of English learning processes. Since I left Australia in March 2018 to come back to France, I feel I have lost my fluency (I lived in Australia for 17 years). So, I am working hard to gain back what I have lost by listening English everyday, reading, and also speaking with my aussie friends on a regular basis. Despite my hard work, I feel I haven't been able to talk English as fluently as I used to. But Hey, I don''t give up and I want to thank you because I get good things from your videos. Somewhere they encourage me to keep going, relax and enjoy my day-to-day relearning stage. I specially liked when you said don't try to speak like a native just be comfortable with your accent- because I think it is true you can't speak like an English native speaker whatsoever and the main point is to speak good English.

thanks for this video! great! I am colombian. I really like spanish and I really like english too. Years ago I used to wish to sound like a native english speaker, but some time ago I really ask myself "why am I supossed to sound like I am not a latino woman?" what is the problem of showing through your accent your origin or your identity? in my country everybody would like to speak english in a way that nobody would notice that it is not your mother tongue, but why? isn´t the purpose of learning a language to understand and being understood? more than 90% of the people from united states that come to Colombia and learn spanish, NEVER try to hide their nationality trying to speak spanish in a "native way", actually we enjoy how they sound because there are words that make so evident that they are not from here and we even smile when we listen to someone making little mistakes, or making evident by their accent they are american. When I speak english I dont even try to make a perfect accent on each word... and my friends like it so much... I think it is just a commercial issue, so some institutes or academies can sell their classes and some youtubers can have some more views, also there is behind all of this the idea that one country is superior to the other, which I totally disagree with. All countries, like all people have their goods and their bads, I would like you to hear me speaking english, because I´m sure you would understand, I am sure that although there would be some little mistakes most of the talk would be gramatically correct, and I am sure that you would notice immediatly where do I come from, and you would like it.😁

I guess "If I Was" mostly, if not completely, used by 'black Americans', and I don't think the black Americans in general speak proper English, as they pay no regards to punctuation whatsoever, and tend to run away with the words, and had been incorporating a lot of reduction in day to day speech.

Behind the language, we have a background that must be taken into consideration, which is: when we're talking about language learning, mainly a second language we have to consider the fact that what you're learning will be summed to what you already have. In other words, you don't delete what you have. Instead you add a new capability that will be always influenced by what you already have, plus your personality and so on. Great topic, Christian!
