Y'know something I never picked up on before...Alexander wanting to see his dead father. Remember when his mother died? Alexander didn't want to look but his father told him to look upon death, and always remember. And things have circled back around to that. First he was told to look, now he's being told not to. Must have been confusing for him. Not to mention Worf was Alexander's only surviving parent at this point, and he believes others are trying to keep him from his father. No wonder he was so insistent on seeing for himself. Poor guy.

I think the most interesting part is that there is no right or wrong here. While some of her earlier scenes where she did the experimental medicine without consent is wrong, Worf's knew the risks and agreed to them. So even if Beverly didn't agree with the risk reward, it wasn't unethnical. They both had their right and wrong moments

@@OfficerHotpants There is a difference when there is a dire imminent need. In this case that wouldn't be the case for Worf, which was Crusher's point of view. The beginning is such a tear-jerker moment for me even just in the little clip. The little notion thrown in about having so many redundant systems was the perfect Chekov's Gun (no pun intended) that made the surprise of Worf's inhale so much better, that allowed the view to discover along with Beverly, that Worf's systems had more surprises in store for us. Awesome writing.

I think that even I'd Warf had died from that surgery complication, offering it was the correct solution, as the alternative was his five-year-old son plunging a dagger into his heart, leaving a mountain of trauma for Troy or another therapist to defuse on top of the "normal" loss of a parent.

The issue is the Dr who is gambling is only set back in research if the patient died, she did not care about Worf at all only her treatment research. Yes he decided to take the risk knowing his odds but at 37% success that is research and treatment that still needs work NOT to be used on the living especially when she was denied 2 or 3 times before. Experimental treatments usually range from 40% chance and up to be viable. This also only worked due to klingon biology.

The only reason the procedure worked was because of the redundant systems and the irony is, the only species that this treatment will work on consistently, is the one species that is most likely to reject the treatment. If Worf was on a Klingon ship, he would have already died.

This is one of those ethical dilemma type of questions. On one had, you have to do you due diligence and ensure you research and understand the therapies you are developing, but on the other hand you also have to take risks and test those theories and therapies in real scenarios so that you can collect real data. The episode presents the problem in a way to let the viewer think over and decide what would be the best option. The reality would have been a sort of meeting in the middle, where worf would have been informed of the procedure and risks, and then given the chance to decide for himself if he procedure was right for him, while at the same time Crusher would have done some further analysis of the procedure to try and improve upon it before administering to worf. This kind of situation is often discussed in hospitals because many cutting edge therapies are found often, but require real subjects inorder to fine tune, while also putting said subject at risk.

Beverly Crusher really shows her hypocritical side in that final confrontation with the doctor. She was simply too close to Worf to truly respect his wishes in this scenario. How would she have reacted if it was herself lying on the bed? Plus she accuses the other doctor of a profound lack of feelings and putting her research ahead of the personal welfare of her patients. The writers should have made this a truly memorable climax, with the other doctor countering her lecture with a firey rebutal.

Beverley really pi$$ed me off in this scene. Worf was paralyzed for life and wanted to die. And he would have found some way to make that happen too, I'm sure. He had nothing to lose as this was a win win situation for him. The op fails, he dies as he wished. The op works and he get to walk again and his life back. Yes, the other Doctor was Cavalier about it all and prepared to take risks that Crusher wasn't... but all the major break throughs in human history were achieved by people who didn't play it safe. Now I can imagine the writers probably intended to show that Beverley was concerned about the other Doctors ethics... but to me, it just came across as sour grapes.

In Klingon physiology, they have what they call "the brak'lul" in which all vital bodily functions were protected by redundant organs or systems. For instance, Klingons possessed two livers, an eight-chambered heart, twenty-three ribs, two stomachs and three lungs. It allowed them to survive injuries that normally killed other humanoids.
