Can I ask, why would you monitor your exposure values off of a LUT-converted signal rather than the actual log signal? With your strategy, your perceived exposure will change every time you load a new LUT. And often, LUTs can change your middle grey values and low/high values - sometimes drastically. Thanks for sharing your content!
@IanSnape
@IanSnape 7 месяцев назад
It’s more likely he uses this as a base LUT for his grade so having it’s exposed as he wants with LUT is more important than what the sensor is seeing. This lut might be massively under exposed if he used the sensor reading. Everyone works differently, I often monitor the sensor as I want to know exactly where I am for the camera I’m on.

Can’t afford the smallHD monitors for now, but I have an OSEE 7 inch monitor that I’ve been using and really enjoying for now. I wanted to ask how you rig up your camera when using the easyrig in this configuration? Do you move your monitor from the handle to mount the easyrig attachment? Since there are only a few limited points to balance the camera for the easyrig.
@julienajarry
@julienajarry Год назад
Hey thanks. Very little changes when I go to the Easyrig. I’ve found the best way is to mount a magic arm off of the top cheese plate for the monitor to the come up over the front of the top handle. You can see that in this video when I’m going through my tools.

Do you monitor the lut directly on your smallHD or are you running the lut from your camera without the lut enabled on the monitor? I shoot on a fx3 and have the lut enabled there, but not on the smallhd. Curious if there's any difference if I monitor on the fx3 in log and monitor the lut on my smallhd. Thanks!
@julienajarry
@julienajarry Год назад
There shouldn’t be a difference. Enabling it upstream at the camera is what I like to do when I can.
@RP-we1rs

Isn't the horizon level sorta dangerous since it is calibrated to the monitor's position and not the camera's? Unless you have the monitor totally level to the camera, which is tough to do with arm extensions, I would think it would give you a false sense of security...
@philippestenier
@philippestenier 5 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if it's possible to have the monitor use the camera's gyroscopic data instead, through the camera control connection for example.

Do you use any tools for nailing focus ? Focus assist, peaking, or pixel zoom ?
@julienajarry
@julienajarry Год назад
I don’t generally use focus tools but sometimes in pinch to zoom to makes sure something is nailed. On occasion I’ve set up focus assist and I’ve certainly seen an AC use it. It’s about dialing in the two values of that tool to get your sweet spot peaking.

@@julienajarry I usually send the FX6 display on my SmallHD 702 touch, do you think it is a bad idea? I actually prefer a clean display, but only because sometimes I am using autofocus lenses so then I can monitor the focus area while I am filming.

Not really much too expensive for what you get. I would rather use a Phone as monitor or a Ninja 5 with proper recording as well. As i did much FPV flying (pre modern FPV times) i used a small included blackbox and it did the trick even at at an old LCD screen, if you rig up everything anyways you can also afford some flaps for the screen and any cheaper not as bright does it as well.
@julienajarry
@julienajarry Год назад
It certainly depends on what you’re doing. I know from my work, the phone won’t cut it and in my experience the atomos panels are crushed and have limited luma.
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
@@julienajarry Sure the phone is "lowest end" or "for free" if you think like that, and i wouldnt use the phone either. I tried my iPhone 12 Mini and it was pretty much useless, a 12 Max probably, at least brightness was okish compared to cheaper monitors. But as i tried the iPad Air tho... that was ok, a iPad Mini would fit good if it would just be brighter (500 or 600 nits is really weak)
@julienajarry
@julienajarry Год назад
@@harrison00xXx I just used an iPad as a directors monitor for a client on a lower budget travel job and it worked perfectly.
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
@@julienajarry As you said, depends on what you are doing more or less. I personally use my iPad wireless as monitor (for the rare stationary wildlife thing) until good recording and viewing monitors are affordable (which they are not yet) If i buy any monitor it should have at least a good recording, prefferable ProRes since the M1 Pro MacBook and FCP can use these files directly and fast. I am mainly a wildlife photographer (with beginning in to videography since the camera can do it) For the videography part i would be very interested in a external monitor on the hot shoe, for photography tho i am pretty ok with the EVF and LCD screen. The EOS R7s EVF is ok/"good", not the sharpest on the market but by a big margin better than a GH6 viewfinder and peaking works ok so its fine for me. Which is for me a nearly always on accessory - A GoPro in a 1080p 60 mode (only Hero 4 Silver...) in a open cage where also a "Nitecore TUP" is clamped in with a thin white sheet as diffusor sticked to it.... Video/photo light and a gopro to record at regular focal length and shoot wildlife with the tele or telezoom lens. Mainly the light needed for indoor photographing or videos or macro. I can flip the whole cage down to the lens for a "small footprint", can point the light up as ceiling light very diffused or forward to have a pretty perfect video light with a little bit of spot to make night video as well at further things. Its ofc a frankenstein and highly budget solution, i just use what i have and can afford :D
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
@@julienajarry I guess for your professional needs even this monitor is not good enough yet and you would also like something better if its released. Im like that with cameras, waited for a while until i got with the EOS R7 a pretty good camera for photo and video without sacrificing any capability too much and especially AFFORDABLE. Since then i try to get better with video but im not only a little bit shaky, i also love to use my cameras handheld only and i hate tripods
