You Guys Wreck Everything!

Our cattle wreck everything! It's another beautiful day with lots of work to do. I make a quick repair to the tedder I bought at auction, then it's out to give the haybine it's first run of the season; cutting tall grass in front of the pastured poultry boxes. Afterwards, Hilarie and I move a batch of broiler chicks out to pasture. Then we have to deal with the Dexter cattle, who have grazed into over mature forage and need to be moved to a new field. Finally, I check in on Red the sow and her new piglets.

All your animals absolutely love you. Your wife reminds me how I would laugh at my husband’s jokes. The jokes were not nearly as funny as it was watching him die laughing at the jokes. We were married 53 years when he passed away in his sleep. Everyone still mentions his jokes to me wherever I go. You are so knowledgeable and you both are such hard workers. Take care of yourself. God Bless.

This guy… I spent a few years of my childhood in the early 1970s living amongst the remnants of midwestern family farms and new hobby farms; cattle, dairy and corn. Part of me has always pined to return to that. Watching this guy is like daydreaming that life. And I don’t get the backache. Thank you for many ( vicariously ) productive days, bing-watching from the couch. Yawn, I’m gonna sleep well tonight!

I grew up on a dairy farm in north western Minnesota and I grew up with the old Case tractors. But I have enjoyed watching the restoration of your MD farmall you have done a fantastic job! And you are right fixing a old tractor right is more expensive than it's worth. But you will have a beautiful tractor that you can use and teach your kids the importance of older farm machinery!

I love your site. You are a nice guy and I think you all work very hard to keep the farm going. Hope all works out at end. It is sad to see animals killed but I do realize that it's all part of life unless your a vegetarian which I'm not. I liked your comment about the lawn moving in this country because it's true. I went to Latvia after USSR fell in the 90's and no one had moved lawns and most people had one cow and a pig running around back yards with high grass and berries and fruit trees. They also brought the cow and horse down the road to a field and staked it and let it graze if they didn't have enough own land. Only in city did you see moved grass. I thought I had gone back in time driving through the country side. Your farm reminds me of that.

It is so dry here in central Minnesota, less then 1/8th of an inch of rain for the last month. Usually the cows and horses would have more then enough pasture and the hay fields would be untouched. what I am experiencing and observing my neighbors doing is unfortunate. We have all been forced to open up our hay fields to grazing, because we lacked the winter snow and spring rain to get the grass growing well. On a side note, I have a horn on my chore tractor. Not only is it good for getting the animals to move out of the way, it is good for calling them into their dry lots in the evening.

Farmer ingenuity... During WWII, you could only get tires if you had a truck. My grandparents only had a car so grandpa sawed the back off of the car (yes, literally sawed it off with a hand saw) and then built a wooden bed. Then he went to town and replaced the worn out tires. Now that’s farmer ingenuity on steroids! And yes, this is a true story verified by all three of my uncles as well as my dad.
