It feels like so many of my favourite pieces of media- Elden Ring, Avengers Endgame, Uncharted 4, Harry Potter and more- have gone hand in hand with either global or more personal "moments". Moments that I'm glad I caught when I did, because there's no replicating them after the fact. The product will stand the test of time, but the moments they come with are once in a lifetime.

I liked breath of the wild but I only played about 6 months ago and I didn't finish it because I got to distracted by the world and about 50 to 60 hours later I was burnt out. I got tears of the kingdom and after 2 hours I was feeling burn out again because it is so much like the first game. My friend and others who played 6 years ago are having a ball but it's all to fresh for me so I made the same mistake as you lol. The difference is in a year or 2 I can play it and fun just not anytime soon, good thing the price never drops lol.

This channel is so good. The mixture of game reviews, essays about interesting game mechanics (the parrying video is top tier) and about emotional connection with games is outstanding. You talk about so many interesting topics and are delivering your thoughts in a way that make every video fun to watch. Especially these „metaphysical“ aspects of gaming are the ones I often think about myself. Not only „What makes a game fun?“, but also „Why does this game make me feel the way I feel when I play it?“ Whenever I imagined myself having a RU-vid channel, it would have this concept. Keep up your unique and inspiring work

When Atomic Heart released i loved the game so much, i was so hooked i played the whole game on 3 days at a 100%. After that i went to the internet to see what people thought and the whole conversation was so toxic. Everyone was talking about the Russian controversy and it felt really bad because the game was nowhere near of being as bad as some media and metacritic said. I had one of the best experiences because it was everything i wanted, the music, graphics, the hype, but after reading so much hate it felt weird to like it afterwards. Next time a game like that releases I'll just stick to my experience and enjoyment.

honestly i support the feeling you mention at the end 100%. i liked cyberpunk and was stunned when i checked the reviews. regardless tho i think atomic heart is still just kinda meh imo too long, bland gameplay, and meh story. still some cool ideas but felt like it really wanted to be bioshock.

I'm actually playing through atomic heart now. I think I land somewhere in the middle with it, not 100% sold but I don't think it's bad. But yeah sometimes I also feel like a crazy person for the opinions I have vs what's online. I think reviews and such are generally important for me to make a decision on my purchase (these things are expensive after all) but I definitely hate the feeling of liking something that so many people hate. It shouldn't effect me but it really bums me out

Playing Elden Ring at the time of its release when nobody knew shit, everyone tried to figure the game out and everyone wanted to talk about their fight against Radahn and how epic it was, especially when he just vanishes and you're like "what the fuck is happening?" and then realize you need to FUCKING RUUUUUUN, or their first encounter against Malenia and just the overall first impressions of ER's vast open world. Shit, it's one of my favorite gaming memories and it was almost half a year ago. It was truly something special and the fact that From Software games are known for having great communities that live and breathe these games and are absolutely obsessed and fascinated by them felt even better. For all its faults and initial balance issues, the game was extremely successful in bringing people together and offering something no game offered before, not even their past games. This was on a bigger scale and everyone was skeptical how FS was going to approach the open world design formula, and wouldn't you know it, Miyazaki and his team knocked it out of the park and gave all of us a fantastic game to experience and marvel at. And yeah, gaming discourse online and the various communities pertaining to gaming on the internet have become extremely toxic in the past decade, it can even ruin your enjoyment of certain titles if you spend too much and get overinvested in said conversations and the overwhelming cynicism and negativity running rampart there, and while I do my best to stay away from such noisy places and incredibly negative online personalities, it's also really nice to find people who share my passion and interest in the titles I'm invested in and to form communities that welcome others and aren't toxic cesspools filled with the absolute dregs of society, that combat the notion that internet is inherently a negative place and that want to be a place of honest, sincere discourse on the medium we all love and want to improve, be it through getting better games or changing the way we talk and see the medium.

Another good one, my dude. I think the internet has had a profound effect on the formation of those sorts of moments in time. I think I most fondly remember those "You had to be there" moments from gaming during my childhood during the pre-internet days (SNES and early PS1 era). I mean technically the internet existed, but basically nobody had it. While the internet allows for fandoms to coalesce around even the most niche things, and can help create those moments/events, it also provides a constant information space that destroys a lot of the mystery. Back in the SNES days, we were getting our game info from monthly magazines and sharing notes on our play experiences. It meant that almost every game had at least some degree of mystery and discovery around it that lends itself to those sorts of YHTBT moments. These days it's only select games that can tap into that sense of mystery and shared discovery despite the internet putting every form of information and spoilers right at your fingertips. Games like Demon's Souls, Elden Ring, and Fez managed to craft mysteries that were strong enough that they endured the internet's crowd sourced solving efforts for long enough to foster those shared experiences, but at least in some cases I feel like they had to be so opaque to do so that the average player wouldn't be able to unlock their value without those communal efforts on the internet. And I totally get where you're coming from when it comes to Skyrim. I'm pretty sure you can guess the remedy I'd propose for it though. Play it in VR. I bounced off the flat version multiple times before I tried it on PSVR and fell in love. I put almost 400 hours into it and still haven't beaten the main campaign. I'd actually recommend playing it in PC VR though (hook your Quest 2 up to your PC), as there are a ton of mods that could improve the experience significantly. But yeah, the massive scope of the world and the exploration all hit very different in VR, and for me it made it much more compelling. Oh and I'd recommend playing as a stealth archer, as the bow mechanics are far more engaging with VR controllers than any other play style (though magic is alright). Rolling through a bandit camp at night like a one man medieval Seal Team 6, headshotting fools before they can wake their allies... it's awesome. Keep up the great work, man!
@AsadAnjum
@AsadAnjum Год назад
Yeah I've always had a weird jealousy of people who talk about the old days of gaming when you wouldn't have easy answers and walk-throughs and had to consult manuals and your friends etc. to enjoy games to the fullest. It's not that you can't do that now, you can if you really try, but it's so inconvenient that you just default to the easiest option. Sometimes I like internet discourse, sometimes I hate it. That's why I sort of took it into my own hands with these videos. I do think those "pre-internet" days are hard to recapture now though, so it makes sense why they stand out to you so much. Yeah I currently don't have a space for vr (especially pc vr) in my current space which is a big part of what's stopping me from using it atm, but as long as I can download mods to change the spiders to something fluffy and cuddly I'm definitely down for at least trying Skyrim VR. maybe at my new place in a few months- although I might be swamped with school work and internship searches so I guess we'll see haha

Skyrim because I did not even know the game was coming until the release month, I was 11 so I did not go onto the Internet much back then. 1:20 - Sometimes I feel like a pedantic prick for expressing these same thoughts but in reality its because I miss the whimsical nature of discussion before the internet became widespread. 2:17 - For this reason I have found a way to just not really care about most opinions on the internet and just think for myself more 3:45 - Looking for better or worse things always leads me to a more negative outlook on a lot of things and for me just ends up being a topic of discussion that goes nowhere (Majora's Mask vs OOT or Fallout 3 vs New Vegas are some that come to mind) I just like both for different reasons. 5:13 - It does not matter if the world is holding their breath for it as long as I or those close to me are excited that is enough to treat it as if the world is waiting for it. 5:24 - Just a small personal note on how god dang amazing that sounds I only wish some of my siblings enjoyed the things I do with at least a small fraction of the passion I have 7:24 - As someone who has recently played games such as Silent hill and Deus Ex I must say while I do wonder what it was like during its release I find myself still enjoying the hell out of games that saw their hurrah years and or decades prior to me playing them, sometimes it feels even better as no one but the most niche communities talk about it making it easy to enjoy them for myself. 12:05 - Feel this on a grand scale my dude having such passion for something but no one really to express it with in detail. 13:00 - I was wondering if you were gonna mention these considering I genuinely enjoy those and while being in an experience when everyone is having fun is great having everyone tell you why you should not like something feels just as bad Amazing Video you put a lot of what I feel into games and media so much so I felt the need to write this long as comment for the video again I guess I am just throwing my opinions into the void.

Sorry for the super late response but I appreciate you taking the time to comment on so much of the video. Like I said, I love hearing people's reactions to my videos and having it spark a small discussion. I think as far as "whimsical, mysterious" discussion goes I think indies tend to scratch that itch, I love people theorizing in small communities and having games like Tunic which can be a bit more vague and mysterious without having info about them plastered all over the internet. It's also great being able to go back and play an old game that I somehow haven't managed to spoil for myself and playing through it like it's an all new experience, then being able to dive into discussion about it after. Not everything needs to be a big event, it's nice to balance it out for sure

Yeah, it's definitely tough to find the middle ground. I think one big thing is that not everything can be "one of the greatest ___ of all time". If that was the case, you'd start thinking that was the norm and all of a sudden they don't seem like the greatest ___ of all time anymore. Even if you heavily vet the games or movies or shows you consume, some of them will be better or worse than others and most of them won't live up to the highest expectations and scrutiny. I think you can be careful in choosing what you buy if you're busy and dont have time to play everything, but don't set ridiculous expectations when you finally pick something, just try and enjoy it for what it is

I feel like I was there for a lot of big moments like that, but also kinda missed the wave. And it's not just for the most recent things like Elden Ring or TotK when I mostly don't care about it being a big deal, but even when I was younger and way more hypeable, it never really was that big of a deal. At most it was me and a couple friends being excited about a specific game. There was stuff where everyone was into something like Pokemon or GTA but it was more a long term thing in the background than a big moment in time. Like yeah I played Halo 3 very late online with a friend before some exams once, but Halo 3 itself wasn't really a big deal for us 😆 And somehow when I was around people who were into Smash (esp university, everyone played it), it was never aligned with the release of a game
@AsadAnjum
@AsadAnjum Год назад
Yeah that's fair. Some people get really caught up in the global excitement of stuff (like me) but even still we wind up associating specific moments in time with our favourite games. If you didn't become friends with those specific people, maybe your thoughts on smash would be different 🤷‍♂️

Lovely topic for a video. None of the stuff you mentioned impacted me (I'm a little old for most of it) but I totally know what you mean. When the Matrix came out it was unreal. The hype hadn't reached me but I saw it the first week it came out and I had to mop my brains off the floor. It was all anyone talked about for months. Sixth Sense was another one. No one saw it coming and it swallowed public discourse. This was, of course, pre-social media so it was very different then. These days hype feels very artificial and I'm unsurprised by a lot of the pop culture stuff that comes out today and that's the feeling I long for again: A leftfield hit that no one saw coming. Tastes change but we all love being part of a collective "moment". For what it's worth, I've started not bothering with stuff until a year later and it's a good way of beating hype. It fades quickly after release which means you can judge a thing better on its own terms, but if you want to ride that wave: all power to you. It's great to see people enthusiastic about communal things. Very wholesome. 10/10. Great video.

Man, I remember the Matrix launch. The commercials were so mysterious about it. They basically just said "What is the matrix?" and showed a couple short clips of mind blowing special effects. It was sooooo cool going into the theater without having a clue what to expect, and having that mystery pay off. Like you I was collecting pieces of my brain by the end. Such an awesome experience. I don't know if such a thing is possible in this day and age with the nature of the modern internet and social media.

Crazy to think that I heard of the sixth sense twist when I was in elementary. I didn't even know what the movie was at the time, people would just meme the twist and that meant I sort of saw it as this unserious, over the top thing. Really goes to show how this stuff is so different in real time. People from the generation before me thought it was mind blowing and I grew up thinking it was kind of a joke. Glad you enjoyed the video, I liked hearing your take on it
