You Hate Ethan Winters: Here's Why

It's like they tried to make him an actual character in re8 but all they had to go off of was random generic lines from re7

Ethan is a breath of fresh air for the resident evil series imo. He’s not some unrealistically strong and cunning character like other RE protagonists. He makes stupid mistakes sometimes and cracks corny jokes and that is part of his CHARM-he’s literally just a husband/father who wants nothing more than to protect his family, and honestly I think I’d dislike him if he wasn’t flawed. Part of the reason village is enjoyable is literally just watching him in first person be dragged and pushed around and still manage to get back up, and if I was supposed to make the choice for him to just easily dodge everything it would be boring.

I'll tell you why. HE WON'T CONTINUE THE REDFIELD BLOODLINE.

Ethan will forever be my favorite protagonist. He’s not crazy strong, pretty average but he’s so determined to save his family even going to lengths to sacrifice himself for his daughter and that’s why I love him

I mean, I clicked on this video to see if there was actually any general reason to hate Ethan but just like I thought no I mean he’s a father who literally did everything for his kid and his wife That’s not just something that you can hate logically He’s different and unique people may call him a basic average Joe but at the same time it’s actually the opposite he literally contrast every single character in resident evil no character is quite like Ethan winters maybe similar, but not the same

Ethan is without a doubt my favorite character in RE. He's an every man who loves his family enough to go through hell for them. He didn;t riley on Chris for help. He did everything on his own and died for Mia and RoseMary

Ethan will always be my favorite character from resident evil because, the first resident evil I played was resident evil 7 and I had a blast with it and then resident evil 8 was a blast as well I mean to me he’s a really cool character

He’s my favorite Male Protagonist. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone hating them. I like that Ethan was just some guy. Not some cop, or some super agent. Just some guy.

Ethan is my favorite character in terms of writing and storyline, no other character could fit into his shoes, he has the least to do with all the other characters and that's amazing, he isn't dumb, he says stupid stuff sure, but you know who else does , Leon, yet he's praised for it, except before the remakes, leon is nothing but one liners, lastly, bro people really think Ethan is the least interesting and cliche protagonist, his story is personal and amazing, saving the world is the plot until ethan came along, that's literally the goal for these characters except for ethan. Ethan is by far my favorite Re character. He is the best in terms of characterization and no one can tell me otherwise.

Rdr2 is a great example how you can feel with the character in either way. You dont have to play the game in firstperson to get attached to them because the dialog options matter more than the camera angle (for me atleast). So when playing in third person you still get to be friendly to npc's or antagonize them wich makes the player feel more like they are playing as the character rather then watching a movie.

part of the dislike for Ethan is him not showing much sympathy for the characters actively trying to kill him Eveline (true she is a child but made his wife try to kill him); Dimitrescu and Hesienberg (many fans just think they're hot and so are mad Ethan wasn't a stand in for themselves) the choice in 7 is a call back to the stupid choice you can make in RE1 hd (playing as either Chris or Jill but for the sake of canonicity playing as Chris you can decide to let Rebecca die and leave Jill behind in the cell) I love Ethan a lot in both 7 and 8 (follow through of character he promises Zoe he'd send help for her and he does with a direct line to Chris Redfield might i add, he promises his baby he'd keep her safe and he does) I haven't play village yet and I just say this because people bellyaching about it get on my nerves i kinda wish we did get a choice to take the deal with heisenberg (as much as it would disrupt one of the most badass moments in the game) just to show that joining with hesienberg would probably go for a bad ending (Ethan failing to save Rose and he himself turning into Miranda and the cycle continuing)

You do realize that Ethan didn't join heisenberg because he didn't want to use his own daughter as a weapon that goes for any parent genius 😒 and for the record I love Ethans one liners both in re7 and re8 Ethan and his family single handily saved the re franchise and Ethan felt like a breath of fresh air. ❤

Ethan certainly isn't my favorite character in the series but it's hard for me not to like him and his determination is endearing to me.

I never got this way of thinking, i don't have to relate to the character or feel like i'm watching a movie about a character i control. I just, fucking, play, the game and if the immersion works it works regardless of camera angle

I'm the complete opposite. I hated him in RE7, and actually like him in RE8 because he's an actual character

honestly i love ethan but sometimes his writing frustrates me so much that i want to throw both myself and ps out of the window

i had a soft spot for ethan even in RE7; like yeah, he could be considered bland, but i liked the idea of an average joe facing these nightmares and continuing to push forward for the sake of his family, it was pretty refreshing compared to the rest of the series' protagonists, who usually have some kind of agenda with or against umbrella Buuut yeah, RE8 fumbled his personality a little. I mean cmon, last game he was entirely willing to listen to Zoe, a random woman over the phone in a house full of psychopaths, but now he wont give Karl the time of day? Despite seeing plenty of evidence that Karl hates this "family" of his, too? Definitely missed potential there

I can understand that some people might not like a character but a lot of people straight up HATE Ethan, and I never understood why. I wasn't really that bothered with him in Village, but I think now I have a better understanding on why people strongly dislike him. In the end, it was Capcom's decision to end his journey on this game so they rushed to give the guy some personality and ended up ruining him, so if I have to blame someone I blame Capcom.

As I see People hate Ethan for him being different than the other Protagonist in the resident evil series But for me That’s what makes him special And also I like how the two games he’s in are the scariest in the resident evil series

Ethan is second only to Leon and even then, it is close. The problem really is that video game makers and video game players are largely geeks who have no idea what being cool actually is. They think having a guy who has one eye covered by bangs is the epitome of cool. Ethan is cool. He is a complete hero and Res Evil 8 has BY FAR the best story in all Res Evils. People dont like him because he doesnt say one liners and doesnt punch boulders

I love Ethan, he's probably in my top 3 of favorite characters (and he's not the third one). I still think that even though RE8 has the best ending of the whole franchise (imo), he died too soon. Wish he got his trilogy

Well, Ethen is the only man to get the succ from Lady D, and live. For many, hes an icon just for that 😂 Him being a self insert is my favorite part, but he is a few screws loose in Village, i have mixed feelings about that game anyways. It felt like a Callisto Protocol, a total rip off of RE4. Nostalgia bait at its finest. Good game though 9/10

I would agree with you on the lack of a choice could kill a connection with a character, but look at BioShock for an example jack is a well loved character in that game and throughout that whole game we thought whe had free will but ended up not at all and people still love him, yeah you have the choice not save or harvest Little sisters but that end up becoming more of a number game than an actual impactful choice

The older resident evil games had way cornier writing, terrible game mechanics and were overall way less fun to play. Fanboys just can’t stop defending the old games

I appreciate the analysis, but can't help fundamentally disagreeing with the notion that first person perspective should necessarily allow for the player's self insertion. I feel this is more tied to the origins of the character. If the game says here is a guy called Ethan who has a wife who went missing and now he's looking for her in this weird house, then I want the game to show me this character even when looking through his eyes and his experiences. I'll insert myself when the game lets me make a character from scratch and choose dialogue options regardless of whether the game is first or third person. Having a bland character with an established story annoys me more when its in first person because it feels like the developers are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Do you want me to insert myself into this story, or experience the story of these characters? I think that contributes to your dislike of Ethan in 8 compared to 7. The character's decisions go against what you would do, but that seems to be an inherent systemic challenge in videogame design in general rather than this game specifically. How do you tell a linear story with character choices that don't align with the player? As long as the character is written in a logical way that you can enjoy spending time with, I don't think this matters so much. Unfortunately, I feel Ethan is not written anywhere near the level that would allow this.

I'm near the end of RE8 and I think he's a really awful garbage character. He's also just really dumb. He sneaks around to grab something behind a villain's back? Well, obvious afterwards you're gonna stand straight up and stare at the villain and then start talking with them. Villain puts a chair down with the back facing a hatch he just opened? Well, just sit down no questions asked. He cried more about a random village girl than his wife getting shot. It was pretty bad in RE7, but just really bad in RE8. They tried to pull an RE4 on his personality, but just completely failed at it. Also Ethan in RE7 was never a player avatar. Never felt like it to me and I played through it fully in VR. He still spoke too much for it to be like one. And that 'decision' part is also a dumb example. You make the decision for which one to save? No, when you pick the non-canon pick both die. When you pick Mia, both survive. You don't get to pick who survives. Either both die or both survive and there's no hints on the consequences of that decision at all. But well, the writing in RE7 and RE8 just aren't on the same level either. It's just modern hollywood garbage. Sure RE4 was also modern hollywood garbage when it came out, but... the hollywood garbage from back then was still infinitely better than what we have right now. The villains, the writing, the voice acting... it's all just comically overdone and bad. There's just too much stuff that doesn't make sense as well, stuff they just did for shock factor or because 'it looks good in the moment', but it doesn't make sense for the continuation. Not even the direct continuation of that situation. It's just so bad. As games... RE7 and 8 are decent, but they're definitely the worst of the mainline RE games and this includes RE6.

I don't hate him but he's pitiful he's the worst character written in Resident Evil he has nothing memorable, zero characteristics he's like an empty container unlike every other character in the main saga, besides that from 7 to 8 they seem more like spin offs than continuations or at most of the reboots as well as the 8th it seems more like van helsing than resident evil (vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein in fish version, let's also add magneto from the x-men) plus we have roses with surreal powers (never happened in resident evil) then from wondering how Ethan managed to make rose if he has already been dead for a while and the virus cannot replicate the seed to create a human it can only clone the person (ok, it's a game but that way the story goes get fucked). There are those who complain about Chris punching a boulder in the lava but they don't complain about a thousand other problems.

I for one love Ethan in re8, even whit all the cringe dialogue. But i like a when a first person protagonist makes decisions because i think that he should make those decisions because it's his story. Hope that made sense.

Ethan reminds me so much of Leon. Completely lacks intelligence and wisdom. Just uses profanity and recklessness through most of his obstacles in his life and shouts at anyone in his way as if he is verbally abusive. He's just emo, weird, ignorant and dumb. Leon makes stupid decisions too. Two of the weakest protagonists Leon & Ethan. Claire is also similar to Leon. I like Chris Redfield a lot (except for in Village he sucked there) especially in 5 (despite the boulder arms) and 7. Jill Valentine is awesome too. I thought Village was lazy writing for the most part especially when Ethan doesn't get to accept Heisenberg's offer like that was such a rushed scene by the developer Capcom. Lady D was boring and overhyped as the cliché vampire. I didn't even like RE2 & RE4 remakes that much they are overrated. RE3 remake was solid though. Resident Evil series is not that good but some of the games are very decent not all of them. Silent Hill is still by far the GOAT of the survival horror genre. The Evil Within is better too. I'm sure Outlast is spookier as well. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is psychological horror perfection in video game form. Ethan's character in a nutshell is just an overprotective father and a paranoid boyfriend. He might have been a hero but his personality is thinner than a piece of paper. Literally no depth to him in writing terms other than the generic "Hey I'm going to save my wife/child!" type of storyline ugh. I feel like most of the complaints are valid in regards to Ethan.

I really don’t understand the resident evil fandom. Really I don’t. I first completed the second one on ps1 then code veronica and the rest is history. These games were getting very repetitive for me and honestly re 4 saved the series then it became more action focused and 7 and 8 was not what I asked for but it retained a lot of the survival aspects that the retro re games had plus it was scary as hell. Sure both 7 and 8 didn’t feel like the usual re games but thats the necessary risk you have to take as writers and designers. Otherwise it’ll just go downhill and you’ll spend more time arguing in online forums than playing any resident evil games. I remember those times friends and colleagues drove my ears red hot with hate about re 5,6 and all the spin offs and Paul S Anderson’s movies until re 7 landed on our laps people finally shut their mouths man those time were hell.
