NurturingTalents anyone who has done a lot of genealogy research could tell you that is false. Even my ancestors from the 1600s and 1700s married in their twenties. Without birth control or economic safety nets, there was no rush to marry and start popping out kids.

I used to think my ex husband was great with money because he had a retirement, some small investments, and money in the bank. He also borrowed money a lot, I thought because we were paid them off quick, that was ok. It took years and hindsight to realize how bad he was. I was 21 and he was 23. Experience is a great teacher.

She picked him. Probably because he brings home over $40k a year (about 60k beore taxes) which is pretty good for a 20 year old. A full time minimum wage job which a high school degree gets you pays < $15 k gross. Then she decided to have a baby and stay home all on her own and cut their income and raise their costs. And according to Dave the relationship god, the husband doesn't get a vote! Who is the real irresponsible one here? It is her. She may be exhausted but if he is deployed , he risks death and/or dismemberment every day so she can get her way. And Dave and the wife get to choose what car he can drive. Brutal!

And the frustrating thing is, as a vet I know that young recruits get more financial education than most Americans will. They are warned about car loans, credit cards, rent-to-own, and so on. But only some pay attention and take note, while the rest go a little crazy with the first “good” paycheck they’ve ever gotten (compared to the part-time job at Hardee’s they left behind), and are quickly in over their heads. I agree it’s a values issue, but it’s largely about impulse control. Some folks figure the out early, and go on to live a financially responsible life. Others never figure it out.

When our first child was born my husband decided we couldn't afford to keep his cherished '37 Packard coupe so we sold it. We both loved that car but our son was more important and we never regretted it. We knew there would be other cars but possibly only one son.

I used to date this marine, he always paid for all my stuff I never paid for anything like when we would go out to eat or go out on dates and stuff. He would talk about how he went with his Marine buddies to Vegas and he blew 2000 gambling.I’ll give him credit that he was able to complete his bachelors and his masters with the G.I. Bill but I specifically remember this one time I opened up and mention that I didn’t have any student loans that I was cash flowing my way through school so I was only going part time school, he was trying to convince me so hard to get a student loan so that I could finish school faster and then pay off those loans later. After that day I never saw him the same way, we broke up and I haven’t seen him since! Thank goddess major red flag now that I look back at it

Even worse is it’s a boat the 2 of you lived on for 18 months before you convinced the bonehead to move into an apartment. And nearly a decade later you find yourself ranting in the comments section of a video because you still feel resentment. I cannot stress this enough- we were young, he was Navy, and I did not believe my mom when she told about what hormones does to a person.

I had a baby at 24. We talked about me staying at home but our financial situation is still bad nearly 2 years after being married. I have to work night shift so we can pay off our credit card and other bills. We can’t afford daycare obviously. I’m starting to resent him so much. I’m struggling to respect him because he’s too passive and I have to repeat myself over and over again for him to do anything for me. We also have a very difficult one year old. I’m a Christian so I feel lost

She needs to be self-sufficient rather than hitching her wagon to a husband at such a young age. I didn't get the sense she had any skills, experience, or education to get a worthwhile career, so she likely didn't create opportunities for herself to stand on her own. Young people need to invest in themselves first and foremost.

William Baker I agree. Instead of putting pressure on one spouse to take on all of the financial responsibility. Having said that, I also understand why a woman wants to stay home with her child. I do think it is better for the child, but there also needs to be some discussion about that. I don’t think selling a car will take care of their problems.

We find it better for the long run both having a career and both having household and child-rearing responsibilities. We also have the added security of having dual incomes and not stunting our career trajectory.

My husband makes the same amount (E5/Army), they are getting BAH for rent/housing adjusted to their area. We get $1,200 a month added on to his paycheck to live, we live on base for $725 a month saving $475 a month. Having a mortgage should not be in the equation since they shouldn’t have bought a home, that is the first advice given to lower enlisted. They have *extra money* to pay their rent, it’s not made to pay a mortgage or to own your own home since it simply isn’t enough with unexpected home owner expenses. Then wants to buy a car? WHAT? This is why so many people are broke in the military.

NurturingTalents in fantasy land, I dated 2 military guys and almost dated a 3rd. All 3 of those guys divorced their first wives. 1 of them is also divorced from his second wife. 2 of the guys married their ex-wives pretty quickly after they met, partly because they were going to be re-stationed and wanted the military to move the girl with them. The other guy married his ex-wife because she was pregnant. They also plug out kids pretty fast after they get married because that “you had a kid” pay raise makes it seem like having a kid won’t be that hard since they’ll have more money to raise the kid with.

The issue is when people jump into a marriage when one or both people aren't mature enough & desire to work through their problems as a team. I live in San Diego, much respect for military but I see this all the time. Trucks, monstrously huge trucks going to the base. Motorcycles, dirt bikes, toys, toys, toys, put some of that money in a bank.

@@jvvaldivia7831 but cheap cars beeak down. Then next thing you know you spent 3k on a transmission. 700 for fuel system. She's lucky she doesn't work because taking time off because you can't get to work is yet another expense not mentioned. 34k a year a tough spot. Thats like 16 an hour. Been there. No fun with 4 in my family but not the worst with 3. Then again I worked other jobs at that time so I may be wrong. All I can say truly is I know what it feels like to work and not get anything you want outside of a relationship. Self fulfillment is a real thing.

I wonder if they had a discussion BEFORE they had the baby as to what their plan was for raising the child. When I was planning to have a child, my then-husband and I planned for it by saving enough money so that I could stay home for at least the first year. Now, obviously there were other issues that caused the marriage to fall apart, but for that first year of my son's life, we were at least on the same page, which helped A LOT!

There may be a lot of backstory here. They are so young, but my question is, did the baby come first? If so, he hasn’t had much time to wrap his mind around the situation. She may want to be married and stay at home and he may never get there. On the other hand, if they were married and the baby came laster then he might be ready to sell the car and focus on his family. Maturity seems to be the issue with both of them.

So many people I know in the military are like this. I'm not sure if it's the "I need the military to give me structure and make me be an adult" but then when it comes to their home life they still act like irresponsible kids, or because like one of my friends who spent several years active duty, with the real possibility of ending up dead on any given day, that they just live in the moment and act impulsively, spending whatever they have whenever they feel like it, with no thought to the future. And for once, I'm not saying this to put anyone down, just making harsh observations.

I sincerely hope everything worked out for this family. I worry that, at that age, he might react in a way that is common for teenagers. That is, by rebellion. He could resent his wife and child for spoiling his fun in life. That could even lead to violence.

That’s likely his true take home too, after taxes. If he’s 2ish years in the Navy, E1 or E2 with a baby his total pay is probably about $46k-47k and about half of that would be untaxed as a housing allowance and subsistence allowance.

They are very young and likely weren't ready for so much responsibility. Hopefully for that child they are able to get on the same page. Dave is right that the guys priorities are not in the right place and she needs to phrase it like that; the car is more important than having a stay at home mom for the baby. She needs to be blunt with him and hopefully he gets it.

I have same problem! I am a mom with 2 children I was a teacher and quit to stay home with our kids, but all my husband does now is complain about paying all the bills alone??? I am so fed up I am truly thinking of leaving him but I stay for our kids. He can afford paying all the bills I am not materialistic at all. He just doesnt try to save and is not smart with money. Its sad todays men do not want to be providers they are lazy and expect women to do 50/50 and another 100% as a mother and housewife duties?!

Staying home is just not a good move for this woman, because it's a matter of time- he will dump her for someone else, she has no work history or up to date skills or degree, she is destined for poverty and so is the kid. I think she should work, just to protect her own security in the long term.
