Bill Haley is the beginning of rock n roll just before it got that name. Rock Around The Clock came just at the right time for the right age group to react to it. Bill Haley seemed to have found just the right amount of country and western to go with the rhythm and blues for his music to become party favorites. And people just reacted the way they reacted. And that was rock n roll at its very core. See you Later Alligator was another phenomenal hit.

I've always wondered why Bill Haley's songs sounded crisper than some songs in the 60s and 70s. What kind of magic equipment are they using in the studio?
@stevegabbert9626
@stevegabbert9626 16 часов назад
@@One.Zero.One101 That's a good question. I don't know how they recorded back then, but I'm guessing they didn't record on different tracks first and then mix them together. At first I was thinking maybe they "remastered" this one, but I worked in radio for a few years, and it always sounded this good, and that was on tape by that point.

That expression and song always reminds us of our South American exchange student we hosted for an entire school year (12th grade) in the '80s. She had studied English for five years in school as a prerequisite for applying to come to the US as an exchange student, but she told use later that until she came to us she had never been around a natural English speaker, let alone tried to hold a conversation with one. We speak so fast, not always in complete sentences, and use so much slang, contractions, idioms, pop culture references, sarcasm, etc. without even thinking about it. At first it was very difficult for her, made more so by the fact she arrived only about a week before the school year started. Talk about having to hit the ground running, or learning to swim by being thrown into the deep end of the pool. For a while, she came home from school every day with a lot of questions about things she had heard at school that made no literal sense no matter how much she used her little Spanish-English translator book in an effort to figure it out. One day probably during the first week she came home and with a puzzled look on her face and said, "Um... what means... 'See you lay-tor, alliga-tor?" Ah yes, that doesn't make literal sense at all, does it? Even just the "see you later" part sounds more like a statement of fact or even a threat rather than simply a casual farewell. But why did they call me an alligator? 😅 We explained it to her and for a moment her brow was still furrowed, then she suddenly "got" it, her face lit up, and she said "Ohhhh!" It became one of our running jokes, and for the rest of the school year she would often say it when going out the door. She would also sometimes purposely say it backwards as a sort of a self deprecating "I don't speak English very well" joke, "See you later, crocodile", or "After while, alligator." On the contrary, she was super bright and a straight A student the entire year. Within a few weeks she was becoming confident enough to leave her pocket translation book at home, and by Christmas break she sounded like any other American teen (well, the really bright, well spoken ones, anyway) with little to no accent at all. In retrospect, she said that midterm was around the time she made the leap to being able to think in English and she no longer had to do the exhausting extra steps of quickly translating both ways in her head while listening to or having a conversation with someone. It was amazing seeing someone in a very short period of time blossom into complete fluency in a foreign language. That simple, silly little idiom will always remind us of her. 🙂

Well, the members were the same, but the name of the band went under different titles. The group was called The Saddlemen because they were doing Western Swing. Even after doing a cover of Rocket 88 in June of 1951 they weren't known as the Comets until September of 1951. Haley called his Hillbilly Boogie -- Cowboy Jive. Bill thought CCR was the best R&R band. He covered a number of their songs. But I think pure Country Music was the best kind of music he did.

Bill Haley and The Comets are remembered as a Rock & Roll band, and actually had the first rock song to go to number 1 on the charts (Rock Around the Clock). Most people are not aware that these guys actually started out as a Swing Band. They were a Big Band like Benny Goodman or Glen Miller for several years. At some point they realized that Big Band music was not the popular music anymore, and it was time for a change. The result was a successful career in early Rock & Roll. However, those Swing Band roots and influences still came through their sound now and then. This song is a perfect example. It's regarded as a rock song but would have sounded just fine being played for the Big Band crowd.

With Halloween coming up, could you do "monster mash?'' Not a Comit song but fun. And... 3rd times a charm. :)

I think Bruce plays this live from time to time. He does a lot of old school rock songs.

I love Bill Haley! I'm gonna suggest a couple of my favorites, which may not be ones that others will mention first, but which are awesome rockin' tunes: Dim Dim The Lights, Burn That Candle, Thirteen Women, and R-O-C-K. It's a dance party when the Comets are in town!

I've never heard that expression before. Is that a Southern term?

I remember when I was about 10 yrs. old & we each had to make up a speech in school for competition. I researched & wrote my speech that year on (I can't quite remember if it was LIFE in the 50s or JUST the music of the 50s.) During part of it, I threw out this song example - Bill Haley & His Comets & this song - "Shake, Rattle & Roll." I didn't just SAY shake, rattle & roll though, I was a bit more lively & sort of sung the line & did a little dance move to go with it - just enough. As it turned out, my speech won for our class & then I had to perform it on stage for the whole school. (I wasn't quite sure how I felt about doing that.) I didn't win at the school level. That was my friend, whose speech was more of a looking after our world speech that was more worthy (vs. pure fun) to go on to the REGIONAL school competition, but when I think of this song, I always think of that speech competition & smile. 😊

Glad you two had your caffeine today & matched proper song with title. Don't worry. 😚 We're just teasing ya. I don't think you've ever done that before. Are you just trying to keep us "looking lively"?

You might remember this song as the one that played over the closing credits of the movie "Clue", which you reacted to last year.
