Hi Peter, greetings from Scandinavia. I clean my sensor myself. You forget to mention that battery Must be not less than 50% because if mirror flips back during your cleaning it will be huge damage. Cheers
@davet3530

Absolutely an essential check before undertaking this process. I always use a fresh battery before any sensor cleaning - it just is not worth the risk of that mirror flapping closed whilst you have anything inside. You could be looking at a very expensive repair.

Some things to add: 1. Make sure you check the web to see if other people have used the fluid you're using with good results. Some cleaning fluids will eat away some sensors so it's very important to use a fluid that others have successfully used with your camera model. 2. Use a fully charged battery. 3. Take test shots before to confirm it needs cleaning and after to see if you got it all. f/22 shots of a bright clear cloudless blue sky work best for me if available at a focal length between 18 and 50mm. In a pinch you can use multiple handheld shots of a clean white wall or white a4 sheet of paper. (Anything blotches or specs that move between shots is not on the sensor.) 4. Light pressure only when cleaning. No scrubbing. 5. You can clean the sensor with dust free pec pads wrapped around a flat piece of plastic that is the right size. When I've tried it's taken multiple (many, many) repetitions, so if you can get the proper pads from a reputable source at a reasonable price that's going to be better. 6. Don't freak out if you think you scratched your sensor. Unless you used a faulty swab, applied a lot of force, or used a fluid that's eaten away your sensor, chances are it's just streaking. Repeat the cleaning, and go easier on the fluid.

Thank you very much. I have had this lovely piece of lint in all of my photos for the past 12 years and have never had the courage to lock up the mirror to clean off the sensor. So I would just photoshop it out of all my images. And I wasn't going to pay someone to do such a simple job either. So over the last 2 months I have been slowly buying up swabs, spray, microfibre cloths and air blower as cheap as could of eBay and FINALLY cleaned my sensor. It worked perfectly and only cost me about $5 in bits and pieces. After seeing that little fluffy line of lint for all those years, I now kind of miss it.

Pete! Just downloaded the presets and LOVE them. You have been THE biggest influence on me as a photographer, both improving my skill and fostering creativity and passion. THANK YOU!! One tiny complaint: The rocket blower you linked to on your cleaning video is different than the one you actually used.... and it's cheap junk. Other amazon reviews testify exactly what happened with mine: broke immediately with first use. I wanted to support you and use your affiliate link, but had to return it and buy the name brand blower. Hope this reaches you and helps you and your fans! (Happy to be one of them) 🙌🏼😁

You don't clean your sensor immediately after you turn off the shower. The humidity pulls the dust from the air and sticks it to the surfaces. Wait a minute for the moisture to fall and then enter and expose your sensor.

I clean sensors at my work, what a lot of people fail to realize is you're not actually cleaning the sensor, you're cleaning the IR filter which is a piece of glass, you can be surprisingly rough with them to get grub off it and it will be fine (the 1DX MK II, A7R MK II and some other cameras have a coating on the glass inside, DO NOT USE CONVENTIONAL CLEANING METHODS ON THESE CAMERAS)

yup, it's pretty funny how overly careful people are. I mean, look at mirrorless. There, whenever you change a lens, your sensor is exposed. And if you do lots of different kinds of photos - e.g. tele, 'normal' lengths and macro, you're going to get a speck of dust on there sooner or later.

JPG tosses away the majority of image information in order to make the file size a lot smaller, giving you less dynamic range and color range to work with. No to mention the compression artifacts that JPG introduces even at the highest compression settings. JPG should only be used for the very final result after editing the image. Of course, if you are happy with the shots straight out of camera with the scene settings applied and you don't want to edit your shots, JPG is fine.

Because the sensor is very close to the mount and the sensor is usually exposed while on a DSLR you have the sensor deeper inside the body hidden behind a mirror AND shutter.

One of the reasons I’m hesitant on buying a second lens, if I have it I’ll have to change and expose the sensor
@christopherlee7318
@christopherlee7318 6 лет назад
Wyvern Apalis it’s almost always good to have multiple lenses and I wouldn’t worry about exposing the sensor as changing lenses doesn’t take long
@Tzadeck
@Tzadeck 6 лет назад
Wyvern, you should really get over this fear quickly. Cameras are meant to be used--you're just missing out by not actually using your gear. Almost all photographers change lenses regularly with no serious problems--you might just have to do what this video suggests once a year or so. Or, if you're the nervous type, you send it away to Canon or whoever to have them do it. Also, about the Sony vs. Canon thing, I actually always had to clean my sensor more on my Canon 5DII than any mirrorless I've used, for whatever reason.

I appreciate that you posted this video. Thanks so much for sharing. I know someone that cleaned his own sensor and ruined it and had to buy another camera. I thought it was more complicated than it is. Glad I got to see the inside of it. Not sure I'd clean my own sensor (I live right near a Nikon service center). But someday I may be in a pinch and may have to. I can't be away from my camera in wedding season so I may need to in the future.

Excellent video! I have microbiology in my background so I get it all exactly (The hairs stand up on the back of my neck if people leave the lid off the mayo!). I have cleaned mine maybe twice and only after a lot of YT research. My 'clean room' was a tent on the living room table wetted all over inside with I forget what -maybe just water). I made my own swab with lens tissue rubber banded onto a tiny rubber baking bowl scapper. Isopropanol kindly supplied by my former place of employment (bioscience lab in my college). And I bought a huge magnifying class. You nailed it when you said it was like defusing a bomb! For lens cleaning (at leat for microscopes) I always taught students that you blow first so there is less chance of polishing a piece of grit as you clean. Great video thanks. Love your stuff!

Hey Peter! Your instructional videos are great but I think we have to be exceptionally careful when dealing with the camera sensor. I believe firmly that one should NEVER touch our sensors unless we're perfectly qualified to do so. If we do have to clean the sensor, I agree that we should only use swabs and proper sensor cleaning liquids. Nothing else. However, I do disagree with a few of the actions here... 1. When you put the swab into the sensor you kinda used a bit of force to press down on the sensor and clean it. I really don't think you should do that as even though you're pressing on the anti-aliasing filter, because of the weight you're putting on something so fragile, you could cause the coating of surface of the sensor to become quite uneven. Instead, you could consider using less force to wipe across the sensor's surface. 2. Do NOT use the same swab to wipe across the sensor a second time! That is the BIGGEST mistake that someone could ever do while cleaning their sensor. This is because, the first time your swab goes across it picks up dust, particles or dirt. By reintroducing that swab onto your sensor, not only could you leave some residue behind from what it picked up before, but the worst that could happen is that the swab drags those particles across the sensor... and you end up with a scratched surface. I think we should all be careful with our sensors and whenever possible try our dearest best to not touch it. It is SUPER expensive to replace a sensor/fix the surface and I don't think any of us would want to be in that position.

Matthew Lim if you own a $4,000 plus camera, I think it's better to just send it away for cleaning once or twice per year as required. Why even f*** with it in the first place.
@matthewlim3362
@matthewlim3362 6 лет назад
I totally agree with you! The sensor replacement could cost almost as much as another camera! But I think Peter's video is out there for those who would like to try cleaning it themselves and are learning to care for their own gear. Furthermore, when changing lenses in a really dusty place while on assignment or holiday you might be forced to do it yourself! No harm putting an educational video out there :)

Nothing wrong with applying a bit of pressure to the swab, I do it all the time and my cameras don't get damaged. If you don't apply any pressure, the sensor doesn't get cleaned.

So......spray cleaning solution on the cloth and wipe the front element of my lens THEN blow it off with a rocket blower. Got it, Next take my DSLR into a hot steamy bathroom and open it up exposing the cool sensor to hot super humid air. Got it! Can I try all this out on your gear 1st? You know, just to see how it turns out.

Morons, a shower running on full heat for five minutes will get nowhere close to "steamy" and if you don't have enough common sense to not put steam into your camera body anyway you deserve to break your sensor.
