I think nowadays we have to accept that the Chinese do have the technical ability and production facilities to produce high quality products. Certainly not everything made in China is of a poor standard.
@@mrbacchus6127 Yeah, the Model T Ford, built in Detroit - the Motor City. Remember the Motor City? No apples or pears here, just watches built for lemons.
5:39 thumbs up for not saying something silly like, "it's DLC not PVD," since PVD is the process and DLC is one type of material that can be applied via the process. Usually when the coating is just described as "PVD", it is because it is coated with a material cheaper and less durable than DLC (diamond-like carbon),even though DLC is applied via the PVD process. A well applied DLC coating is VERY durable. I have a Fortis titanium case that's coated with DLC. Titanium is normally more susceptible to scratches than stainless steel. However, I've actually buffed "scratches" out of the DLC where it was actually the coating that removed material from whatever I bumped the watch against. The piece is several years old and the coating did end up with slight wear spots on some of the crown ridges and 2 lug tips. I'm figuring the coating was thinner in these sharp areas combined with frequent rubbing against during use. As far as "will stay new looking", I had another version of the watch that I'd kept in the case and never worn (it was chronograph and I preferred the cleaner simple 3 hand version). Both the same age and when I sold the chrono last year, there was a slight but noticeable patina on the 3 hand version (which I'd worn almost daily for over a year) as I held them next to each other. . So, if the coating is well applied, it should resist scratches well, but may end up fading a bit in color as it patinas with wear and age. That was my experience with it, with what appeared to be a fairly quality DLC application.
Why? He already sells the wonderful SNZ for $109. It's such a deal ... buy two and a couple of choice straps. Incidentally, I would love to buy these new 22mm two-piece (non-Nato) straps. I have cut-down half my NATO's ... but my watches still ride 1.4 mm higher than really required.
Mark, thanks for making the watches that Seiko should be making. With your attention to details and the upgrades that you provide over a regular Seiko, these watches are the best deal around!
Your killin me man!!! My bank account is gonna take a dive now for sure. Great job on the whole islander series, I'll be buying next week for 1 or 5 haha. Thanks Marc you rock brother.
These look amazing and reasonably priced too, however I said I would build my turtle homage to learn about modding. Love the black ninja Turtle style, definitely looking to do a build with this watch in mind👍
I've been humming and hawing on whether or not I wanted to get an SKX. I bought my first watch last year, a Glycine Combat Sub, and have been itching to get a second one now. A lot of my findings say that the SKX has all the horological significance, but the outdated movement bugs me. With the Combat Sub, I like the hacking feature and the sapphire crystal. All of this is to say, this new Islander "SKX" is everything I want. And that new blue dial one with the blue/grey bezel is brilliant. Gonna start saving now, but thanks for making these. I have no hesitations anymore and the Islanders look incredible.
I love the sandblasted finish. You're next on my list. I think a black PVD bracelet would look great. Even Gloss PVD because of the ceramic bezel. It would also just make the sandblasted finish pop that much more IMO. I'm thinking Silicon first though. I do like the strap it's on as well but that piece would do well on Silicon to me. If Seiko made the "King", LIW makes the SUPER turtle. Love it. "See" you soon!
Love the logo when paired with a dual time bezel, feel it really goes well with the watch since it can provide dual time (I.e. clock logo). But not crazy about it with the regular minute dive bezel. That being said great value. Would love to see something bidirectional if possible, no one's seems to ever do birectional.
I've got one skx007 DLC. Got i it coated 10ish years back and it became my everyday at one point. it took some nasty knocks. DLC is so damn tough!! I'll definitely be looking at your DLC coated.
I was never into sand blasted finishing until i picked up a white dial Hamilton Khaki Field that had it. Changed my mind forever. Thew new lineup looks great!
The problem would be with the movement… The NH 35/36 variants (Seiko) Are chunky...The slimmer size is that would allow for a smaller case Would be a 9000 series Myota...Or a Swiss movement (S200 series) or clone...Of course there will be an increase in price…

I think that DLC version will actually look quite good after some patina. It may look awkward with a few scratches, but after quite a bit, it looks like a well loved piece. The first scratch always hurts the most.
While Mark!!! You had me at hello...I already have your Islander “Better than the SKX” model...and now I am going to have to get the “Island Turtle”! 😉 Love the bead/sand blasted Case. It’s an aesthetic that I’ve always wondered why more manufactures didn’t offer it.Looks Great...Going to put my turtle on eBay today! Keep it going! Your minions will keep buying them!
Another superb value for the price. Kudos to the two piece NATO as well, I don't see a lot of those and IMHO those fit on the wrist a lot better than the regular ones. The DLC looks sick, love it and it's my favorite among these.
Mark, these are awesome! I just bought a Prospex Turtle SRP787K1 cause I didn't know! I can Almost guarantee that DLC model will outsell the rest! Again....great pieces!
The Island series is brilliant!! It's amazing how Mark timed it for what I'd call "orphaned" SK fans. These additions, including the Turtle style really get my attention. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I would LOVE to see an option, especially in something like these rugged tool watch designs with a solar movement for daily carry. It's hard to find that with the sapphire (domed even!!) and a ceramic bezel coupled with a grab-and-go low maintenance movement.
I agree. I have never cared for the look of the Turtle, but this version I do like. I am also one that does not normally like the black PVD watches as much, but I like your version. I think the thought of the DLC being more scratch resistant appeals to me and it looks great with the ceramic bezel and the double domed sapphire crystal. I think I will be getting the DLC, it will be my only black watch. The only thing I am not sure about is the 45mm. My largest watch is 42mm with most being from 36-40mm, but this is the best looking black sports watch I think I have seen and I really like the durability aspect of it, which is the same reason I am so attracted to Rado watches. Thanks for making and showing these. Also would like the dual time bezel more than the dive bezel, but not a big deal and since I am not buying this watch for that reason, it does not affect the sale, I just would pick that between the two if both were available. Cheers.
Now I have to get a new watch display case for my Islander collection. If you start making branded watch boxes I'm all in. Hey Marc, here's an idea, branded Four slot watch box with a set of Four different Islander models. "The ISLANDER Collection" Sounds like a great Christmas gift to me. Food for thought. Bravo sir!
bin a subscriber for a while can't believe i missed this video this is my dream watch just fell in love with it, going to starting to save up for it right away, love the islander line you have made and they will become the focus of my collection, is there any chance you will make orange sundial version with a semi brushed case?. anyway love your work keep it up. best wishes from a big fan from Norway
Marc is there a place somewhere where we can make a slight change? Kind if like your watch your way but with the Islander? I love everything about these turtle islanders but I am concerned about the domed sapphire crystal protruding. Me being a field guy doing a lot of outdoor things just see myself banging the watch with normal wear but hitting the crystal first.
What a difference the sapphire crystal makes to the Seiko-esque models , the way the light catches them is just totally different. Hope they are as successful as you hope .
Nice! As said below...I saw them on the site this morning. Hmmmm...is der Flieger comin zee here? Lol. Don't mean to harass, glad your brand is progressing. Good work!
Damn so sweet! I wish the DLC had one difference, I wish the indeces (is that how its spelled?)had that yellow patina color similar to the the Ninja turtle . That would have made it perfect imo.
